An Alginate/Cyclodextrin Spray Drying Matrix to Improve Shelf Life and Antioxidant Efficiency of a Blood Orange By-Product Extract Rich in Polyphenol…

Alginate and β-cyclodextrin were used to produce easily dosable and spray-dried microsystems of a dried blood orange extract with antidysmetabolic properties, obtained from a by-product fluid extract. The spray-dried applied conditions were able to obtain a concentrate dried extract without the loss of AOA and with TPC and TMA values of 35–40% higher than that of the starting material. They were also effective in producing microparticles with 80–100% of encapsulation efficiency. The 2% sodium alginate was capable of improving the extract shelf life, while the beta-cyclodextrin (1 : 1 molar ratio with dried extract) prolonged the extract antioxidant efficiency by 6 hours. Cocoa polyphenols and their potential benefits for human health.

This paper compiles the beneficial effects of cocoa polyphenols on human health, especially with regard to cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases, metabolic disorders, and cancer prevention. Their antioxidant properties may be responsible for many of their pharmacological effects, including the inhibition of lipid peroxidation and the protection of LDL-cholesterol against oxidation, and increase resistance to oxidative stress. The phenolics from cocoa also modify the glycemic response and the lipid profile, decreasing platelet function and inflammation along with diastolic and systolic arterial pressures, which, taken together, may reduce the risk of cardiovascular mortality. The area of Gela (Sicily, Italy) contains one of the largest petroleum refineries in Europe and also has several oil fields both on land and offshore. This paper discusses how the oil refinery and traffic-related air pollution affect the chemical composition of airborne particulate matter over the town of Gela, using pine needles and urban road dust as the means of survey. Determination of alcohols in essential oils by liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection after chromogenic derivatization

Abstract An HPLC-UV method to determine compounds having a hydroxyl functional group in plant essential oils is developed. The sample is diluted with 1,4-dioxane and the analytes are derivatized with phthalic anhydride. The derivatives (phthalates hemiesters) are separated on a C8 column using an acetonitrile (ACN)/water gradient. Separation conditions were optimized using the DryLab® method development software. For the alcohols and phenols present in mint and rose essential oils, optimization led to a ca. 40 min gradient time and a column temperature of 8 °C. Analysis of four parabens and bisphenols A, F, S in urine, using dilute and shoot and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry

Abstract A new strategy for the analysis of 4 parabens (methylparaben, ethyl paraben, propyl paraben and butyl paraben) and 3 bisphenols (A, F and S) in human urine has been developed. Dilute and shoot and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) determination was employed. Procedural matched calibration, certified materials and spiked samples were used for validation. The obtained recoveries varied between 85 and 104% with a precision lower than 20% for all analytes. Determination of tannic acid by direct chemiluminescence in a FIA assembly

The determination of tannic acid is performed in a FIA assembly on the basis of the analytical output obtained by oxidation of the acid. The analyte solution was daily prepared in a mixture of quinine as sensitiser and perchloric acid and it was injected into a pure water stream acting as a carrier. This solution merges with the mixture potassium permanganate in perchloric medium and the resulting chemiluminescence is monitored. The generalised H-point standard addition method (GHPSAM) is proposed for isolating the analytical signal of an analyte from the signal of an unknown sample. Samples containing two and three coeluting compounds have been analysed. The accuracy of the predictions depends on the shape of the analyte and interferent spectra but not on the degree of chromatographic overlap. This methodology involves the location of linear intervals for the unknown interference spectrum from the spectrum of the sample.
