Seneca on the Mother Cow: Poetic Models and Natural Philosophy in the Consolation to Marcia

2020

Seneca’s Consolation to Marcia embraces the orthodox Stoic view that, when unduly protracted, grief reflects a logical misunderstanding of the natural world, human life, and the limits of the self. Seneca is aware that persuading Marcia to leave her false beliefs is the only way to reawaken her interest in communal life, family reciprocity, and constructive memory. He conceives his consolatory writing as an intellectually engaging didactic work tailored to the needs and disposition of his addressee. The main purpose of the present paper is to show that in this and several other respects the Consolation to Marcia makes a conscious move towards the different but evidently related genre of did…

Fractal dimension confidence interval estimation of epicentral distributions

1999

Estimates of the fractal dimension of hypocentral distributions require evaluating the range of independent variables in which fractal parameters exhibit a power law. Systematic and accidental errors are produced mainly by the subjective selection of this range, the insufficiency of data sets as well as by hypocenter mislocations. Therefore it is very important to determine the confidence intervals which are associated with fractal dimension estimates. The effects of various sources of errors are studied using different geometric clusters of epicenters, which have been synthetically generated using a multicluster algorithm with different hierarchical levels, so as to reproduce some characte…

“Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie and the Ambiguous Afterlife of the History of the Acadians”

2018

Abstract Longfellow’s Evangeline was hailed as a great and distinctively American work when it appeared in 1847, and the poem’s use of North American history was a key element in its favourable reception. This use of history, however, is ambiguous and complex. The epic continues, first of all, in a long tradition of romanticized retellings of the heart-rending story of the Acadians. But the work also engages in a dual-level dialogue with both the mid-eighteenth-century history of the Acadians, who are pitied, without inciting indignation, and the contemporary history of midnineteenth-century America, whose expansionism it both implicitly celebrates and criticizes. Resume Evangeline, le poem…

Icarus and Daedalus in Toni Morrison's "Song of Solomon"

2012

In Song of Solomon Toni Morrison rewrites the legend of the Flying Africans and the Myth of Icarus to create her own Myth. Her depiction of the black hero’s search for identity has strong mythical overtones. Morrison rescues those elements of mythology black culture which are still relevant to blacks and fuses them with evident allusions to Greek mythology. She reinterprets old images and myths of flight, the main mythical motif in the story. Her Icarus engages on an archetypical journey to the South, to his family past, led by his Daedalic guide, on which he finally recovers his ancestral ability to fly. His flight signals a spiritual epiphany in the hero’s quest for self-definition in the…

Dermal dendritic cells, but not Langerhans cells, are critical in murine single epicutaneous sensitization

2014

A murine repeated protein-patch model has been established to study epicutaneous sensitization in atopic dermatitis. This model has shown a predominant Th2 and a weak Th1 response in both BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice. However, Th responses induced in the repeated model are not consistent with the generally accepted theory that BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice are Th2 and Th1 prone and are representatives of human atopy and non-atopy, respectively. In this study, a single protein-patch model was established, which showed in addition to the Th2 response, a remarkable Th1 response in C57BL/6 mice, but not in BALB/c mice. Moreover, using muLangerin-DTR mice, we demonstrated that dermal dendritic cells, but n…

Malebranche: el placer dinámico y ordenado

2021

2019

The essay analyzes particular scenes of the poem by Tasso (XVI and XVIII) where the symbolic meaning of the places and scenes depicted by the characters is more explicit. It traces the long pictorial, artistic and musical reception of Gerusalemme Liberata to reflect on the transformative effects of ecfrases in the development of epic events
