Quasi-Modes and Spectral Instability in One Dimension
2019
In this section we describe the general WKB construction of approximate “asymptotic” solutions to the ordinary differential equation $$\displaystyle P(x,hD_x)u=\sum _{k=0}^m b_k(x)(hD_x)^ku=0, $$ on an interval α < x < β, where we assume that the coefficients bk ∈ C∞(]α, β[). Here h ∈ ]0, h0] is a small parameter and we wish to solve (above equation) up to any power of h. We look for u in the form $$\displaystyle u(x;h)=a(x;h)e^{i\phi (x)/h}, $$ where ϕ ∈ C∞(]α, β[) is independent of h. The exponential factor describes the oscillations of u, and when ϕ is complex valued it also describes the exponential growth or decay; a(x;h) is the amplitude and should be of the form $$\displaystyle a(x;h…
Mothers' parenting stress and adolescents' emotional separation: The role of youngsters' self orientation
2015
The study examined the association among mothers’ parenting stress, adolescents’ emotional separation and self-orientation toward connectedness. Participants were 194 Italian adolescents, aged from 15 to 19 years (mean age = 17.39, SD = 1.18), and their mothers, aged from 33 to 64 years (mean age = 44.35, SD = 5.40). General findings showed that adolescents’ emotional separation may not necessarily be associated with their mothers’ parenting stress, but both of these variables may be related to adolescents’ personal characteristics, which may contribute to define parent-child relationship. Particularly, adolescents’ orientation towards a connected self was associated negatively with emotion…
Analysis of a parabolic cross-diffusion population model without self-diffusion
2006
Abstract The global existence of non-negative weak solutions to a strongly coupled parabolic system arising in population dynamics is shown. The cross-diffusion terms are allowed to be arbitrarily large, whereas the self-diffusion terms are assumed to disappear. The last assumption complicates the analysis since these terms usually provide H 1 estimates of the solutions. The existence proof is based on a positivity-preserving backward Euler–Galerkin approximation, discrete entropy estimates, and L 1 weak compactness arguments. Furthermore, employing the entropy–entropy production method, we show for special stationary solutions that the transient solution converges exponentially fast to its…
The role of perceived autonomy support in predicting university students’ academic success mediated by academic self-efficacy and school engagement
2019
This research analysed relationships between perceived teachers’ autonomy support and academic success, with self-efficacy and school engagement acting as mediators. This was a survey of 870 studen...
Grit, Self-Efficacy, Motivation and the Readiness to Change Index Toward Exercise in the Adult Population.
2021
This study examined the relationships between grit personality, self-efficacy, motivation (autonomous, controlled, and amotivation), and the readiness to change index toward exercise. Participants were 391 adults aged between 18 and 64 years old (M= 31.16;SD= 12.45) from Hermosillo, Sonora (Mexico) who completed questionnaires (i.e., the Grit Personality Scale, the Exercise Self-Efficacy Questionnaire, the Treatment Self-Regulation Questionnaire and the Stages of Change Questionnaire for Physical Activity) measuring the variables of interest. The reliability of the instruments was tested using Cronbach's alpha, whereas confirmatory factor analyses were performed for each instrument separate…
Effects of feedback on self-efficacy, performance, and choice in an athletic task
1999
Abstract The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of feedback on self-efficacy, performance, and task choice, and the mediating effects of self-efficacy in the feedback-performance and task choice relationships. Participants were 69 Spanish students, 46 males and 23 females, between 18 and 24 years. The experimental paradigm consisted of three sessions. In the first, participants performed on the hurdles. In the second, manipulated feedback referring to the previous performance was provided. Participants then estimated their self-efficacy for a second task which they later performed. In the third session, participants were presented with three tasks involving clearing hurdles of p…
Associations Between the Residential Environment and Physical Activity in German College Students and the Role of Self-Efficacy as a Mediator
2014
Social-ecological models suggest that influences on physical activity should be examined on multiple levels, but most of the empirical studies in this area have investigated the different levels separately. To integrate the different levels, we examined self-efficacy with respect to physical exercise as a mediator of the relation between environmental characteristics and physical activity. In a cross-sectional German study, 1,292 college students completed a questionnaire that included measures of their perceived residential environment, self-efficacy, and physical activity. Structural equation modeling was used to assess direct and indirect effects on physical activity. The cycling and wa…

Pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy in implementing inclusive practices and resilience in Finland
2021
Abstract This study aims to explore Finnish pre-service teachers' self-efficacy in implementing inclusive education and their resilience. Survey data were collected from 105 pre-service teachers studying in a teacher education programme in one university in Finland. The relationships between pre-service teachers' self-efficacy in implementing inclusive practices, their perceived resilience, and background variables were examined using structural equation modelling. The results confirmed a three-factor structure for self-efficacy in implementing inclusive practices among the pre-service teachers. In addition, pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy was the strongest variable that related to thei…
