Toward potent antibiofilm degradable medical devices: A generic method for the antibacterial surface modification of polylactide
2013
International audience; The effects of biomaterials on their environment must be carefully modulated in most biomedical applications. Among other approaches, this modulation can be obtained through the modification of the biomaterial surface. This paper proposes a simple and versatile strategy to produce non-leaching antibacterial polylactide (PLA) surfaces without any degradation of the polyester chains. The method is based on a one-pot procedure that provides a "clickable" PLA surface via anionic activation which is then functionalized with an antibacterial quaternized poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (QPDMAEMA) by covalent immobilization on the surface. The anti-adherence and an…
The effect of surface charge on nonspecific uptake and cytotoxicity of CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots
2015
In this work, cytotoxicity and cellular impedance response was compared for CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) with positively charged cysteamine–QDs, negatively charged dihydrolipoic acid–QDs and zwitterionic D-penicillamine–QDs exposed to canine kidney MDCKII cells. Pretreatment of cells with pharmacological inhibitors suggested that the uptake of nanoparticles was largely due to receptor-independent pathways or spontaneous entry for carboxylated and zwitterionic QDs, while for amine-functionalized particles involvement of cholesterol-enriched membrane domains is conceivable. Cysteamine–QDs were found to be the least cytotoxic, while D-penicillamine–QDs reduced the mitochondrial activ…
Response of human endothelial cells to oxidative stress on Ti6Al4V alloy.
2007
Titanium and its alloys are amongst the most frequently used materials in bone and dental implantology. The good biocompatibility of titanium(-alloys) is attributed to the formation of a titanium oxide layer on the implant surface. However, implant failures do occur and this appears to be due to titanium corrosion. Thus, cells participating in the wound healing processes around an implanted material, among them endothelial cells, might be subjected to reactive oxygen species (ROS) formed by electrochemical processes during titanium corrosion. Therefore, we studied the response of endothelial cells grown on Ti6Al4V alloy to H(2)O(2) and compared this with the response of endothelial cells gr…
Characterization and osteogenic activity of a silicatein/biosilica-coated chitosan-graft-polycaprolactone.
2014
Several attempts have been made in the past to fabricate hybrid materials that display the complementary properties of the polyester polycaprolactone (PCL) and the polysaccharide chitosan (CHS) for application in the field of bone regeneration and tissue engineering. However, such composites generally have no osteogenic activity per se. Here we report the synthesis of a chitosan-graft-polycaprolactone (CHS-g-PCL) and its subsequent characterization, including crystallinity, chemical structure and thermal stability. Upon surface-functionalization of CHS-g-PCL with osteogenic biosilica via the surface-immobilized enzyme silicatein, protein adsorption, surface morphology and wettability were a…
Upconversion Nanocarriers Encapsulated with Photoactivatable Ru Complexes for Near-Infrared Light-Regulated Enzyme Activity.
2017
Enzyme activity is important for metabolism, cell functions, and treating diseases. However, remote control of enzyme activity in deep tissue remains a challenge. This study demonstrates near-infrared (NIR) light-regulated enzyme activity in living cells based on upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) and a photoactivatable Ru complex. The Ru complex is a caged enzyme inhibitor that can be activated by blue light. To prepare a nanocarrier for NIR photoinhibition of enzyme activity, a UCNP and the caged enzyme inhibitors are encapsulated in a hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticle. In such a nanocarrier, the UCNP can harvest NIR light and convert it into blue light, which can activate the caged e…
Electrospun PCL/GO-g-PEG structures: Processing-morphology-properties relationships
2017
Abstract Polycaprolactone (PCL) biocomposite nanofiber scaffolds with different concentrations of graphene oxide (GO) and GO surface grafted with poly(ethylene glycol) (GO-g-PEG) were prepared by electrospinning. Morphological, mechanical as well as wettability characterizations of electrospun nanofibers were carried out. Results showed that the average diameter of PLA/GO electrospun nanofibers decreased upon increasing the filler content. Differently, the diameter increased while using GO-g-PEG. Both nanofillers enhanced the electrospun PCL hydrophilicity even if PCL/GO-g-PEG samples exhibited improved wettability. The Young moduli of the composite nanofiber mats were improved by adding GO…
Self-organization of porphyrin units induced by magnetic field during sol-gel polymerization
2007
The use of a magnetic field as a controlling factor during the hydrolysis-polycondensation of porphyrin precursors substituted by Si(OR)(3) groups, induces a self-organization of porphyrin moieties due to the stacking of these units in the hybrid material and this study also confirms the effect of the magnetic field in the nano- and micrometric organization during the kinetically controlled polycondensation process.
PEDOT thin films with n-type thermopower
2019
peer-reviewed Synthesis of n-type organic semiconductors is challenging as reduced states are difficult to obtain due to their instability in air. Here, we report tailoring of semiconducting behavior through control of surfactant concentration during synthesis of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanoparticles. Nanoparticles were synthesized by mini-emulsion polymerization, where stable suspensions were used to produce polymer films by a simple casting technique on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates. Electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficients were measured as a function of surfactant concentration. It was found that conductivity decreases three orders of magnitude as s…
Ni alloy nanowires as high efficiency electrode materials for alkaline electrolysers
2021
Abstract The fabrication and characterization of nickel-alloy electrodes for alkaline electrolysers is reported. Three different alloys (Ni–Co, Ni–Zn and Ni–W) at different composition were studied in order to determine the optimum condition. Nanostructured electrodes were obtained by template electrodeposition into a nanoporous membrane, starting from aqueous solution containing the two elements of the alloy at different concentrations. Composition of alloys can be tuned by electrolyte composition and also depends on the difference of the redox potential of elements and on the presence of complexing agents in deposition bath. Electrochemical and electrocatalytic tests, aimed at establishin…
Controlling phase formation in solids: rational synthesis of phase separated Co@Fe2O3 heteroparticles and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles
2011
A wet chemical approach from organometallic reactants allowed the targeted synthesis of Co@Fe(2)O(3) heterodimer and CoFe(2)O(4) ferrite nanoparticles. They display magnetic properties that are useful for magnetic MRI detection.
