2020
Abstract of the report “Staged otherness as an object of ethnographic investigation”, presented on October 23, 2020 at the international conference “Challenges in Ethnography: Ethnographers and Ethnographic Knowledge” organized by the Lithuanian Institute of History. The presentation for the conference was made in the project “The Live Human Exhibitions in the Territory of Latvia at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries between Science, Entertainment and Homophobia” (No. 1.1.1.2/VIAA/3/19/516)
The contribution proposes a reflection on the theme of motherhood that links the objects of the Sicilian Ethnographic Museum Giuseppe Pitrè as a core idea and a narrative struct…
The Dark Side of Value Co-Creation: The Example of French Commercial Architecture
2018
Innovation is a network activity where different actors collaborate. An ethnographic survey of the French commercial architecture industry highlights the ambivalence of this co-production process. The results identify the sources of co-creation and co-destruction related both to the motivations of the actors and their interactions and examines their consequences. Retailers are encouraged to reposition themselves as project leaders, responsible for both assigning roles and mediating between the creative and technical functions. The development of new communication platforms to overcome interpretive biases between the diverse set of actors is also recommended.
Il tarantismo in Sicilia
2017
2020
In the first part of this article I propose to approach the ‘ontological turn’ in anthropology by focusing on how Martin Holbraad and Eduardo Viveiros de Castro link epistemological, ontological and political issues. Focusing on their new epistemological views to others’ forms of thought and their intrinsic conceptual and ontological presuppositions, inexplicable through the recourse to external determinants, these scholars aim at a radical epistemological and political questioning of the bipartitions of Western modern ontology (such as nature vs culture) in line with Bruno Latour’s ideas on ‘modern constitution’ and its distinction between ‘matters of fact’ and ‘matters of concern’. The ar…

2018
This article describes the main results of an ethnographic study on citizen participation carried out in the context of the development of the Urban Initiative (2007-2015): Cuenca-Barrio de San Antón. Managed by the City Council of Cuenca and financed by the European Regional Development Funds (FEDER) under the Ministry of Economy and Finance at the Government of Spain The results of the research show how in the context of the application of neoliberal policies, citizen participation becomes the trigger for new conflicts between institutions and citizens. In this sense, it is worth noting how, in practice, institutions in their capacity as experts and not willing to dis-empower themselves, …
Ethnographic Interventions: A Strategy and Experiments in Mapping Sociospatial Practices
2007
A growing awareness exists of the possibilities of architectural research adopting working methods used by artists. Many artists have adapted ethnographic methodologies to map site specificity and issues related to community and sociospatial practices. This paper draws on related examples of art practice to formulate a specific research strategy: ethnographic intervention. Ethnographic intervention has three characteristics: (a) ethnographic mapping of spatial practices on site, (b) the possibility of a horizontal replication of the study, and (c) an intervention protocol. We define ethnographic mapping as a critical process directed towards a specific cultural, social, or architectural sit…
