A Clinical Comparison between the Gamma® and the Claufitt® Nails in Unstable Proximal Femoral Fractures

2007

Purpose To assess the differences that exist between two intramedullary osteosynthesis systems for the treatment of unstable proximal femoral fractures in an attempt to find out whether the use of an antirotation screw improves the final result. Materials and methods A retrospective study was carried out to analyze the plcement and clinical evolution of both intramedullary nailing systems (Gamma ® y Claufitt ® ). The patients’ medium-term functional status was evaluated and benchmarked against the characteristics of the population served by our University Hospital. A final database was obtained made up of 43 cases of Claufitt ® that met the criteria of our study. A functional assessment sys…

Synthesis and biological evaluation of structural variants of carbazoquinocin C

2003

Some new structural variants of the alkaloid carbazoquinocin C were synthesized in a few steps with good to excellent yields. The key step comprises a cyclisation reaction of appropriate 2-vinylindoles with oxalyl chloride. The carbazole-3,4-quinones are able to trap oxygen-centred radicals. In some biological/biochemical assays some of these compounds exhibit extraordinary results including inhibition of cyclooxygenase-1 and 5-lipoxygenase in the μM-range. Moreover some of the carbazoquinocin C-variants inhibit significant oxidative damage of cellular DNA in nM-range.

Water Extract of Cryphaea heteromalla (Hedw.) D. Mohr Bryophyte as a Natural Powerful Source of Biologically Active Compounds

2019

Bryophytes comprise of the mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. Cryphaea heteromalla, (Hedw.) D. Mohr, is a non-vascular lower plant belonging to mosses group. To the date, the most chemically characterized species belong to the liverworts, while only 3.2% and 8.8% of the species belonging to the mosses and hornworts, respectively, have been investigated. In this work, we present Folin–Ciocalteu and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) data related to crude extracts of C. heteromalla obtained by three di erent extraction solvents: pure water (WT), methanol:water (80:20 v/v) (MET), and ethanol:water (80:20 v/v) (ETH). The water extract proved to be the best solvent showing the highest con…

La distribuzione di Maxwell-Boltzmann: i risultati di una sperimentazione svolta nell'ambito dei corsi di laurea in ingegneria

2011

This paper describes the outcomes of an teaching experiment conducted in the seminar held at the Faculty Engineering of Palermo University. The theme of the seminar focused on undergraduate experiment that yields the velocity distribution of thermionic electrons by analyzing the I-V characteristics of diodes and triodes. By using a simple model, the velocity distribution of thermionic electrons emitted by the vacuum tube cathode can be described by Maxwell's distribution. The experiment allows students to focus on the distribution function more than on difficulties arising from the complexity of thermionic emission. Questo articolo descrive i risultati di una sperimentazione didattica condo…

Study of the Importance of Emotional Factors Connected to the Colors of Fresh-Cut Cactus Pear Fruits in Consumer Purchase Choices for a Marketing Pos…

2015

Cactus pear has always aroused curiosity because of its shape and its particular structural characteristics (plate and spiny clatodes, oval fruits of different colors and flowers of an enchanting beauty). This plant evocates the territory where it grows, characterized by a sub-tropical climate, which in Europe is represented by the region of Sicily (Southern Italy), that is one of the main producers of the Mediterranean area. Sicily has three native cultivars with different colors of the fruit: red, yellow and white. The variety with the yellow fruit is the most widespread, although all of them are commercialized. The chromatic variety of these fruits might be an important element of attrac…

A visual framework to create photorealistic retinal vessels for diagnosis purposes

2020

The methods developed in recent years for synthesising an ocular fundus can be been divided into two main categories. The first category of methods involves the development of an anatomical model of the eye, where artificial images are generated using appropriate parameters for modelling the vascular networks and fundus. The second type of method has been made possible by the development of deep learning techniques and improvements in the performance of hardware (especially graphics cards equipped with a large number of cores). The methodology proposed here to produce high-resolution synthetic fundus images is intended to be an alternative to the increasingly widespread use of generative ad…

Technical and economical comparison between different topologies of PV plant under mismatch effect

2014

This paper presents a technical and economical comparative analysis between two topology of photovoltaic plant. In particular the performances of series-parallel (SP) and total cross tied (TCT), topologies are taken into account, referring to a partially shaded photovoltaic plant. Thanks to a simulation model developed, in the paper the mismatch effects due to three different shading conditions, for SP and TCT topology plant, are quantified. Since the TCT solution, even though increase the energy production, raise the complexity of plants as well as their costs, an evaluation of the individual costs of each component of a SP and TCT plant topology, as PV modules, support structure, inverter…

An Appeal for Implementing Social Assistance and Welfare Programs for European Children Challenged by Parental Loss

2018

The authors of this commentary, many of whom are part of a working group on social pediatrics supported by some of the European national pediatric societies member of EPA-UNEPSA, conclude that more studies are needed to cross the boundaries between disciplines, for example, looking at the inter-relationship of family life and child health and how parental loss is affecting the micro and macro level of child healthcare service systems. Therefore, this article aims to alert pediatricians to the impact of parental loss on child health and wellbeing. It emphasizes the importance of implementing preventive and social support programs for achieving health promotion and health-protective effects.
