The effects of different phases of an observed movement on the modulation of cortical motor output were studied by means of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). A video-clip of a reaching-grasping action was shown and single TMS pulses were delivered during its passive observation, Times of cortical stimulation were related to the phases of the shown movement, locking them to the appearance of specific kinematic landmarks. To investigate the incompletely understood somatotopical organization of the corticospinal tract in the human brainstem, we performed a voxel-based statistical analysis of standardized magnetic resonance scans of 41 prospectively recruited patients with pyramidal tract dysfunction caused by acute brainstem infarction. Motor hemiparesis was rated clinically and by the investigation of motor evoked potentials to arms and legs. Infarction affected the pons in 85% of cases. We found the greatest level of significance of affected brainstem areas between the pontomesencephalic junction and the mid pons. Abstract Objectives: Somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) studies suggested that some early cortical SEP components may be generated in the primary motor cortex (M1) rather than the primary somatosensory cortex (S1). Methods: We now used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study activation of S1 and M1 by electrical median nerve stimulation in healthy volunteers. Results: The hand areas of both S1 and M1 showed significant activation (correlation coefficients >0.45) in 7 of 9 subjects (activated volume S1>M1). Abstract Objectives : Intra-individual variability of SEP parameters was investigated by serial SEP recordings. Methods : Median nerve SEP of 53 normal subjects (mean age 25.5±2.7 years) were evaluated. Recordings were repeated 1 week, 2 weeks, and 6 months after the initial recording. Results : Mean values of latencies from right median nerve stimulation were slightly longer (+0.1 ms) as compared to the left. The intra-individual (within stimulation side) variance did not depend on the time interval between recordings. Auditory evoked potentials and in this context especially five waves in the first 10 ms (early auditory evoked potentials = EAEP) are a diagnostic aid in topodiagnosis of posterior fossa diseases. This is due to waves I to V which arise along the acoustic nerve and in brain stem structures such as medulla, pons and mid-brain. Besides an indication about the site of a lesion in the posterior fossa, wave V allows an objective threshold determination. The present results were gained in normal children aged 1-3 years and in children with neuropaediatric and audiologic disorders.

Abstract Transitory evoked otoacoustic emissions are normal phenomena observed in most persons with hearing levels greater than 35 dB. Further, masking of the contralateral ear produces amplitude reductions in the transitory evoked otoacoustic emissions. We have undertaken a study of transitory evoked otoacoustic emissions in 20 patients with acoustic neuroma. All patients were assessed for transitory evoked otoacoustic emissions bilaterally, with and without contralateral masking with white band noise at 40, 50, and 60 dB.
