Isolation and partial characterization of antagonistic peptides produced by Paenibacillus sp. strain B2 isolated from the sorghum mycorrhizosphere.

2005

ABSTRACT Paenibacillus sp. strain B2, isolated from the mycorrhizosphere of sorghum colonized by Glomus mosseae , produces an antagonistic factor. This factor has a broad spectrum of activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and also against fungi. The antagonistic factor was isolated from the bacterial culture medium and purified by cation-exchange, reverse-phase, and size exclusion chromatography. The purified factor could be separated into three active compounds following characterization by amino acid analysis and by combined reverse-phase chromatography and mass spectrometry (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and mass spectrometry-mass spectrometry). The first com…

Synthesis and characterization of redox-sensitive polyurethanes based on L-glutathione oxidized and poly(ether ester) triblock copolymers

2021

Abstract Segmented polyurethanes, based on PCL-PEG-PCL copolymers, 1,4-diisocyanatobutane and l -glutathione oxidized, used as chain extender, were synthetized. Three different reactions conditions were investigated using three different copolymers having ɛ-CL/polyethylene glycol molar ratios equal to 12, 24 and 36 and three different reaction conditions. As investigated by size exclusion chromatography analyses and quantification of l -glutathione, the polymerization and the extension phase's efficiency depended on the ɛ-CL/PEG ratio and the extension phase's operating temperature. Three selected polyurethanes were characterized by spectroscopic, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and…

Oxidative stress in preterm infants: Overview of current evidence and future prospects

2020

Preterm birth (PTB), defined as parturition prior to 37 weeks of gestation, is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the neonatal population. The incidence and severity of complications of prematurity increase with decreasing gestational age and birthweight. The aim of this review study is to select the most current evidence on the role of oxidative stress in the onset of preterm complication prevention strategies and treatment options with pre-clinical and clinical trials. We also provide a literature review of primary and secondary studies on the role of oxidative stress in preterm infants and its eventual treatment in prematurity diseases. We conducted a systematic literature s…

Chapter 8 Native and Bonded Silicas in Aqueous Sec

1988

Publisher Summary This chapter deals with the properties of packings and columns in correlation to chromatographic separations in size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and provides guidelines for optimum support design. The chapter provides a survey of the current state-of-the-art with respect to the surface modification of silica for SEC packings in aqueous eluents. The properties of commercial packings and columns are listed and compared. An advice is also discussed on the operation and maintenance of columns with a view to achieving high resolution and long life-time. In SEC, solute elution is based on equilibrium, entropy-controlled size exclusion process. According to their size, the so…

Training for Work at the Margins of the Projective City

2020

Drawing upon the work by Boltanski and Chiapello and Boltanski and Thevenot, the training provision that is offered in Spain both to vulnerable youth and to socially excluded adults is analyzed here. It is too often the case that trainers in those programs work under temporary contracts. The reason for this is that the institutions they work for, often Non Governmental Organizations but also municipalities or trade unions, work under the so called projective city—i.e., a connectionist rationale. This fact has an impact upon the notion of work that these trainers portray to trainees attending their vocational training schemes, on-the-job training as well as guidance support. It is also the c…

Measure, category and learning theory

1995

Measure and category (or rather, their recursion theoretical counterparts) have been used in Theoretical Computer Science to make precise the intuitive notion “for most of the recursive sets.” We use the notions of effective measure and category to discuss the relative sizes of inferrible sets, and their complements. We find that inferrible sets become large rather quickly in the standard hierarchies of learnability. On the other hand, the complements of the learnable sets are all large.

From the shade into the sun: exploring pride and shame in students with special needs in Finnish VET

2021

This paper reports on a study of the dynamics of social emotions and social bonds between students and class teachers by analysing the narratives of students receiving intensive special support in the Finnish vocational education and training (VET) system. Pride refers to a strong and safe involvement in interaction, and shame implies intimidated social bonds. The analysis is based on abductive content analysis for which Greimas’ actant model worked as an analysis tool. We found some students showing high respect to their teachers who acted as senders setting the objects for students’ studying. Pride is based on the students’ experiences in achieving the objects, thereby pleasing their teac…

El sistema de prestaciones por hijo a cargo en España

2006

Child Benefit (prestaciones familiares por hijo a cargo) is the only monetary, regular and direct allowance to contribute bringing up children in Spain. Therefore, the Family Allowance System might be seen as a privileged watchtower where it is possible to observe complex and dynamic relationships between the family, the State and the market. Moreover, it shows its influence on the wellbeing and on the dynamics of inclusion or exclusion. This paper analyzes the Spanish economic allowance addressed to children and its evolution since its last reform in 1990. The main goal is to contribute to our understanding of the compromise level acquired by the Spanish State for familycare. This study tr…
