The analgesic-antiinflammatory extract fromAraujia sericifera lacks ulcerogenic activity on stress-gastric damage model

The present study evaluates the ulcerogenic activity of the hexane extract from dry fruits of Araujia sericifera in an experimental model of cold-restraint stress. Treatment of rats with 200 mg/kg (i.p.) of hexane extract did not affect the gastric lesions induced by cold-restraint stress. However, it was confirmed that a dose of 300 mg/kg (i.p.) of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) which induced a similar analgesic-antiinflammatory effect, increased significantly the level of gastric damage. Thus, the hexane extract from the fruits of A. sericifera seems to possess analgesic-antiinflammatory properties which are not linked to gastrolesive effects.

Design of a System to Compose 50 Hz Alternating and Static Magnetic Field From Induction Coil and Permanent Magnets

We demonstrate a technical solution to achieve an intense 50 Hz alternating magnetic field and a static magnetic field made by a permanent magnet at the same place. A compact coil built using the Bitter coil concept is customized to support alternating current, thus creating an alternating magnetic field. A complementary permanent magnet assembly is built around it to achieve the superposition of both fields along the axis of symmetry. Results from the experimental model are compared to both numerical and analytical models.

Comparison of complex fractionated atrial electrograms at cellular scale using numerical and experimental models.

This study investigates the existence of the pseudo complex fractionated atrial electrogram (CFAE) at cellular level. Our assumptions are based on the fact that CFAEs are linked to the generation of the spiral waves. These are created using a numerical model and an experimental model of in vitro culture of neonatal rats cardiac cells. Pseudo bipolar electrograms resulting from these two models are compared qualitatively and some patterns could be identified as CFAE signature.

A series of processes occur during acute myocardial infarction that contribute to the development of ventricular dysfunction, with subsequent heart failure and ventricular arrhythmias, which account for most episodes of sudden cardiac death in these patients. Oleuropein protects against dextran sodium sulfate-induced chronic colitis in mice.

The anti-inflammatory effect of oleuropein (1), the major phenolic secoiridoid in Olea europaea, was evaluated in an experimental model of chronic colitis in mice. Animals were exposed to four repeated cycles of dextran sodium sulfate in drinking water followed by a 7-day rest period. Animals receiving a standard diet supplemented with 0.25% of 1 (equivalent to 500 mg/kg/day) for 56 days exhibited a decrease of inflammatory symptoms, as reflected by improvement of disease activity index and histopathological changes. Among the studied molecules the decorin was found to exert a non-permissive effect on the growth and motility of the transfected tumor cells. The decorin belongs to the family of small leucine-rich proteoglycans (SLRP) and is involved physiologically in the fibrillogenesis of collagen. In the last few year a new anti-oncogenic role has been proposed for decorin1. This study aimed to implement the knowledge on the effects of ectopic decorin on breast cancer cells using as a reference point the results already achieved by our research group2 on the experimental model format. By breast cancer cell line 8701-BC and its transfected clone DEC-C2. The extension of the proteomic analysis combined with the mass spectrometry allowed to triplicate the number of identified proteins in our model. Among the newly identified proteins were members of the classes of metabolic enzymes S100 family and cell motility proteins which revealed a net decrease in the decorin transfected cells. Of considerable importance is the observation that these classes of proteins are the most involved in metastatic progression. These results confirm and reinforce the anti-oncogenic role hypothesized for decorin. The work was co-funded by the Italian 5x1000 to COBS.DECORIN
