Water-use efficiency and transpiration across European forests during the Anthropocene
2015
Considering the combined effects of CO2 fertilization and climate change drivers on plant physiology leads to a modest increase in simulated European forest transpiration in spite of the effects of CO2-induced stomatal closure. The Earth’s carbon and hydrologic cycles are intimately coupled by gas exchange through plant stomata1,2,3. However, uncertainties in the magnitude4,5,6 and consequences7,8 of the physiological responses9,10 of plants to elevated CO2 in natural environments hinders modelling of terrestrial water cycling and carbon storage11. Here we use annually resolved long-term δ13C tree-ring measurements across a European forest network to reconstruct the physiologically driven r…
The role of oxidation treatments before and after CVD synthesis of graphene on copper catalytic surface
2021
Graphene is a sheet of honeycomb bonded carbon, that is only one atom thick. Aside from its remarkable strength, graphene has great conducting and photochemical prop erties. Due to its unique properties, it can be used as viable option for rare metals in circuits and in new type of measuring components. To express these properties at their best, graphene should be single crystal and as clean as possible. In this bachelor thesis, different treatment options for catalytic metal surface for graphene synthesis are studied in chemical vapor deposition growth. Different options to treat the catalytic metal layer were studied, such as changes in gas compositions in annealing process, electropolish…
Influence of a Cu–zirconia interface structure on CO2 adsorption and activation
2021
CO2 adsorption and activation on a catalyst are key elementary steps for CO2 conversion to various valuable products. In the present computational study, we screened different Cu–ZrO2 interface structures and analyzed the influence of the interface structure on CO2 binding strength using density functional theory calculations. Our results demonstrate that a Cu nanorod favors one position on both tetragonal and monoclinic ZrO2 surfaces, where the bottom Cu atoms are placed close to the lattice oxygens. In agreement with previous calculations, we find that CO2 prefers a bent bidentate configuration at the Cu–ZrO2 interface and the molecule is clearly activated being negatively charged. Strain…
Browsing hinders the regeneration of broadleaved trees in uneven-aged forest management in southern Finland
2020
Uneven-aged forest management has attained increasing popularity. It may benefit biodiversity, buffer against pests and abiotic damages, decrease runoff from clearcuts and improve recreational values. We studied how gap cuttings and single-tree selection cuttings influence browsing damage in spruce-dominated forests in south-central Finland. Overall, browsing damage was especially frequent in aspen and rowan, but also in birch. The larger the basal area left in harvesting, the lower the browsing pressure on birch and rowan; neither the harvesting method nor the seedling density had an independent effect on browsing damage. Although larger tree retention levels may reduce browsing damage, th…
Transfer of Immunity from Mother to Offspring Is Mediated via Egg-Yolk Protein Vitellogenin.
2015
Insect immune systems can recognize specific pathogens and prime offspring immunity. High specificity of immune priming can be achieved when insect females transfer immune elicitors into developing oocytes. The molecular mechanism behind this transfer has been a mystery. Here, we establish that the egg-yolk protein vitellogenin is the carrier of immune elicitors. Using the honey bee, Apis mellifera, model system, we demonstrate with microscopy and western blotting that vitellogenin binds to bacteria, both Paenibacillus larvae – the gram-positive bacterium causing American foulbrood disease – and to Escherichia coli that represents gram-negative bacteria. Next, we verify that vitellogenin bi…
Recognition of alkali metal halide contact ion pairs by uranyl-salophen receptors bearing aromatic sidearms. The role of cation-pi interactions.
2005
Hard anions have long been known to bind strongly to the uranium of uranyl-salophen complexes. Upon functionalization of the salophen framework with one or two benzyloxy substituents, efficient ditopic receptors for alkali metal ions are obtained. The solid-state structures of complexes formed by the two-armed receptor 1 with CsF and with the chlorides of K+, Rb+, and Cs+ reported here reveal the existence of dimeric supramolecular assemblies in which two receptor units assemble into capsules fully enclosing (MX)2 ion quartets. In addition to the strong coordinative binding of the anion to the uranyl center and to electrostatic cation-anion interactions, stabilizing interactions arise from …
Time Unification on Local Binary Patterns Three Orthogonal Planes for Facial Expression Recognition
2019
International audience; Machine learning has known a tremendous growth within the last years, and lately, thanks to that, some computer vision algorithms started to access what is difficult or even impossible to perceive by the human eye. While deep learning based computer vision algorithms have made themselves more and more present in the recent years, more classical feature extraction methods, such as the ones based on Local Binary Patterns (LBP), still present a non negligible interest, especially when dealing with small datasets. Furthermore, this operator has proven to be quite useful for facial emotions and human gestures recognition in general. Micro-Expression (ME) classification is…
Postcards and Supasigns : Extending Integrationist Theory Through the Creation of Interactive Digital Artworks
2007
Integrationism is a post-structuralist theory of language and communication. The theory has been applied to a groundbreaking analysis of writing as a form of communication where writing is teased apart from speech and realigned with spatial configurations in general. Although it has many practical applications, this view can be extremely difficult to comprehend when expressed as a very specific form of writing, that is, as written words on paper. A solution to this problem is offered by the creative interaction design of two digital artworks, Postcard From Tunis and Postcards From Writing. The works are interactive multimedia pieces that creatively express the integrationist theory of writi…
