The African Legal Support Facility as a Tool against Vulture Funds
2012
The article describes the action of vulture funds in enforcing sovereign debts against countries and the tools adopted to address the issue.
Numerical and experimental investigation of a cross-flow water turbine
2016
ABSTRACTA numerical and experimental study was carried out for validation of a previously proposed design criterion for a cross-flow turbine and a new semi-empirical formula linking inlet velocity to inlet pressure. An experimental test stand was designed to conduct a series of experiments and to measure the efficiency of the turbine designed based on the proposed criterion. The experimental efficiency was compared to that from numerical simulations performed using a RANS model with a shear stress transport (SST) turbulence closure. The proposed semi-empirical velocity formula was also validated against the numerical solutions for cross-flow turbines with different geometries and boundary c…
SEMANTIC WEB TECHNOLOGIES FOR IMPLEMENTING COST-EFFECTIVE AND INTEROPERABLE BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING
2015
International audience; In the field of AEC/FM, BIM has been recognized by industrial and political actors as a powerful tool for resolving data interoperability problems. Coupled with cloud computing and GIS, BIM would allow integrating different information exchange standard into one single digital building model that can be real-time edited by several stakeholders or architects. In this paper, we examine the benefits brought by using Semantic Web technologies in delivering such universal building model. We present how our approach is a step further in reaching the vision of BIM, and how it can serve construction process, operation and maintenance, along with facilities’ lifecycle managem…
INTEROPERABILITY BETWEEN GIS AND BIM A Semantic-based Multi-representation Approach
2011
International audience; Interoperability of information systems is partially resolved due to many standards such as networks protocols, XML derived languages and object oriented programming. Nevertheless, semantic heterogeneity limits collaborative works and interoperability. Despite ontology and other semantic technics, the binding of heterogeneous information systems requires new technics of managing and displaying information according to the semantic representation of each stakeholder of the collaboration. In this paper we addressed the problem of merging geographical information systems and building information model. The way to achieve this goal must solve several heterogeneity proble…
COBieOWL, an OWL ontology based on COBie standard
2015
International audience; Building Information Modelling (BIM) standards have been recognized by construction and political actors as a highly promising tool for resolving issues of data dematerialization, notably in the field of Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Facility Management. Among worldwide-adopted BIM standards, there is COBie. COBie’s goals are to dematerialize building data and to enhance building information interoperability. Nevertheless, COBie data is available in static formats such as STEP or spreadsheet templates. Such formats lack logical formalisms and semantic features provided by languages such as OWL. Because of this, in this paper, we propose a method for sem…
Identifying clouds over the Pierre Auger Observatory using infrared satellite data
2013
We describe a new method of identifying night-time clouds over the Pierre Auger Observatory using infrared data from the Imager instruments on the GOES-12 and GOES-13 satellites. We compare cloud. identifications resulting from our method to those obtained by the Central Laser Facility of the Auger Observatory. Using our new method we can now develop cloud probability maps for the 3000 km(2) of the Pierre Auger Observatory twice per hour with a spatial resolution of similar to 2.4 km by similar to 5.5 km. Our method could also be applied to monitor cloud cover for other ground-based observatories and for space-based observatories. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Building Information Modeling (BIM) Enabled Facilities Management Using Hadoop Architecture
2017
International audience; Protecting the safety of occupants and the environment is a core value within Facilities Management. Data acquisition systems such as wireless sensor networks can help to monitor facilities to reduce hazards such as fire, water flooding and burglaries. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a revolutionary development that is reshaping the Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. BIM is both a process and a technology, offers wide solutions for facilities management. In order to monitor and manage facilities data in a BIM based simulated environment, this work reports upon a development of a system that uses BIM software and a wireless sensor technol…
Model wielowymiarowej profilaktyki pozytywnej w teorii i praktyce pedagogicznej
2019
Artykuł opisuje teoretyczne oraz empiryczne założenia autorskiego modelu wielowymiarowej profilaktyki pozytywnej. Ponadto prezentuje sposób jego urzeczywistnienia w praktyce pedagogicznej, przedstawiając strukturę autorskiego programu profilaktycznego Wsparcie wielowymiarowego rozwoju młodzieży, zrealizowanego wśród wychowanków Domu Dziecka w Chmielowicach. Teoretyczne podstawy modelu odnoszą się do teorii głównych i teorii szczegółowych. Natomiast założenia empiryczne sprowadzają się do metodyki konstruowania programów profilaktycznych, a więc kryteriów doboru i metod oddziaływań profilaktycznych, uczestników oraz strategii ewaluacyjnej. Model wielowymiarowej profilaktyki pozytywnej w prak…

First real–time detection of solar pp neutrinos by Borexino
2014
International audience; Solar neutrinos have been pivotal to the discovery of neutrino flavour oscillations and are a unique tool to probe the reactions that keep the Sun shine. Although most of solar neutrino components have been directly measured, the neutrinos emitted by the keystone pp reaction, in which two protons fuse to make a deuteron, have so far eluded direct detection. The Borexino experiment, an ultra-pure liquid scintillator detector running at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, has now filled the gap, providing the first direct real time measurement of pp neutrinos and of the solar neutrino luminosity.
