Beyond Subsidies: A Study of Sustainable Public Subordinated Debt in Spain
2019
Evidence from business shows that small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are fragile. They suffer from a high mortality rate that primarily owes to difficulties in securing financing as a result of major information asymmetries. Despite these difficulties, SMEs provide the economic backbone of all economically developed countries. Aware of the key role of SMEs in national economic stability and of the financial problems that SMEs face, governments have designed a range of financial and tax measures to protect them. These financial measures include a highly specific form of public financing called subordinated debt. This concept refers to debt with the lowest credit seniority, just befor…
Money for the Issuer: Liability or Equity?
2021
Abstract This study analyzes the nature of money through the lens of the international principles of accounting and lays the foundations of what it calls the accounting view of money (AVM). Using international accounting principles, the AVM argues that the fiat monies issued by the state (typically, cash, banknotes, and central bank money) are not debt and that in fractional reserve regimes, only a share of commercial bank money can be regarded as debt. The AVM argues, instead, that state monies and the nondebt share of commercial bank money are net wealth of their holders and net worth (equity) of their issuers and determines how the seigniorage associated with money issuance should be acc…
New Strategies for the Synthesis of Fluorinated Vinylogous Amidines and β-Enamino Ketones
2001
Reaction of fluorinated imidoyl chlorides 3 with ketimines 1a provides fluorinated 1,3-diimines, which were exclusively isolated as vinylogous amidine tautomers 2beta, with good yields. Fluorinated beta-enamino ketones 4 are obtained by regioselective hydrolysis of 2. Complementary methods for the synthesis of regioisomeric beta-enamino ketones 4 and 5 are also reported. These methods include the reaction of azaenolates of ketimines with fluorinated esters 6 and reactions of ketone enolates with fluorinated imidoyl chlorides 3. The behavior of these systems in hydrolysis reactions was also tested.
3'-Arylazido-beta-alanyl-2-azido ATP, a cross-linking photoaffinity label for F1ATPases.
1989
Abstract The synthesis of the 3′-arylazido-2-azido ATP derivative 3′-O-{3-[N-(4-azido-2-nitrophenyl)-amino]propionyl}2-azido-adenosine 5′-triphosphate (2,3′-DiN3ATP) is described. The bifunc tional photoreactive ATP analog is characterized spectroscopically. Photoaffinity labeling of F, ATPase from Micrococcus luteus by this analog results in the inactivation of the enzyme and in the formation of higher molecular weight cross-links,

Large Scale Synthesis of Mono- and Di-urethane Derivatives of Lysine.
1999
Orthogonally protected diurethane derivatives of lysine are valuable materials for peptide syntheses. An example is ZLys(Boc), which is exploited in the industrial production of certain well-established peptide drugs. 3,4) Another derivative is Fmoc-Lys(Boc), which is in common use in the laboratory synthesis of peptides. 5) The simplest route to these lysine derivatives seems to be using the copper complex for simultaneous protection of the a-amino and a-carboxyl function, N e -tert-butoxycarbonylation and then copper detachment. The obtained Lys(Boc) might be then subjected to N a -benzyloxycarbonylation.
Molecular Design of the Cαβ Interface Favors Specific Pairing of Introduced TCRαβ in Human T Cells
2008
Abstract A promising approach to adoptive transfer therapy of tumors is to reprogram autologous T lymphocytes by TCR gene transfer of defined Ag specificity. An obstacle, however, is the undesired pairing of introduced TCRα- and TCRβ-chains with the endogenous TCR chains. These events vary depending on the individual endogenous TCR and they not only may reduce the levels of cell surface-introduced TCR but also may generate hybrid TCR with unknown Ag specificities. We show that such hybrid heterodimers can be generated even by the pairing of human and mouse TCRα- and TCRβ-chains. To overcome this hurdle, we have identified a pair of amino acid residues in the crystal structure of a TCR that …
Impact of Reactive Oxygen Species on the Expression of Adhesion Molecules in Vivo
2008
Many non-surgical tumor treatments induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) which result in cell damage. This study investigated the impact of ROS induction on the expression of adhesion molecules and whether alpha-tocopherol pre-treatment could have a protective effect. Experimental rat DS-sarcomas were treated with a combination of localized 44 degrees C-hyperthermia, inspiratory hyperoxia and xanthine oxidase which together lead to a pronounced ROS induction. Further animals were pre-treated with alpha-tocopherol. The in vivo expression of E- and N-cadherin, alpha-catenin, integrins alpha v, beta 3 and beta 5 as well as of the integrin dimer alpha v beta 3 was assessed by flow cytometry. The…
Polymer Films in the Normal-Liquid and Supercooled State: A Review of Recent Monte Carlo Simulation Results
2000
This paper reviews recent Monte Carlo simulation studies of the glassy behavior in thin polymer films. The simulations employ a version of the bond-fluctuation lattice model, in which the glass transition is driven by the competition between a stiffening of the polymers and their dense packing in the melt. The melt is geometrically confined between two impenetrable walls separated by distances ranging from once to about fifteen times the bulk radius of gyration. The confinement influences static and dynamic properties of the films: Chains close to the wall preferentially orient parallel to it. This orientation tendency propagates through the film and leads to a layer structure at low temper…
