Exploring 2040 : Global Trends and International Policies Setting Frames for the Finnish Wood-Based Economy
2022
Global trends influence the approaches and mindset for using natural resources and technological capacities. Participatory scenario methods have proven useful in long-term foresight. However, country-level foresight studies often ignore the broader trends affecting international markets and setting frames for economic development. This study envisions which global trends could occur and how the resulting European policies might affect the Finnish forest sector’s development in 2040. We applied a Futures Wheel approach, where stakeholder groups consisting of policy-, economic- and social sustainability-, technology-, and climate sustainability -experts in the field of forestry and interlinki…
Teachers' perspective on gratitude within classroom environment
2015
The present is a qualitative research on the topic of gratitude, specifically in classroom contexts. Its main purpose is to explore potential situations where gratitude is speculated to be present within classroom activities. The research took place in a primary school in the city of Jyväskylä, Finland. Two different groups of this school were videotaped during one of their lesson and the material was used in stimulated recall interviews. In the stimulated recall interview, teachers gave accounts about the different grateful moments and provided information about their thoughts and possible reasons why children were grateful. The main results from this investigation highlight seven differen…
Haluttu, menestyvä ja laadukas seura : tapaustutkimus Jyväskylän Naisvoimistelijoiden seuratoiminnan muutoksesta
2017

From a Finnish player to an English avatar : language alternation in immersive video gaming sessions
2015
Parenthood and gender inequality : Population-based evidence on the child penalty in Finland
2019
This study presents evidence on the effect of parenthood on labor market outcomes in Finland. We use population-based data drawn from administrative registers and an event study design centered around the birth of the first child using the specification proposed in Kleven et al. (2019b). The study confirms that women encounter large short- and long-term child penalties in gross labor earnings and that penalties are associated with employment participation. Taxes and social security transfers considerably reduce the child penalty, which also varies by the number of children. peerReviewed
Understanding Finnish education: science popularization and scholarly work as intertwined activities
2015
Moving to Finland two years ago had given new push to my work in many ways. I have been studying Hungarian educationfor about thirteen years and I have been addressing the general public with popularizing materials for nearly five years now. However, in Finland these activities become more complex than in my native country. Here, I wish to discuss how my research found larger and larger contexts in two steps: First, by starting to make my research available to wider audiences in Hungary, and second, by turning my focus to an international environment. I claim that these two types of recontextualization are not only beneficial for me as a researcher personally but also serve the researched c…
Parenting styles of Finnish parents and their associations with parental burnout
2022
Abstract In the present study, we examined what kind of parenting style groups (defined by parental warmth, behavioral control, and psychological control) can be identified among contemporary Finnish mothers and fathers and how these parenting style groups are associated with parents’ symptoms of parental burnout. Gender differences in parenting style groups, and in their associations with parental burnout, were also investigated. The survey data were gathered from 1,471 Finnish parents (91.2% mothers). The results of k-means cluster analysis identified six different parenting style groups: authoritarian (13.5%), permissive (15.2%), psychologically controlling (19.4%), uninvolved (14.4%), c…
Kokeilu kirjoittamisen itsearvioinnista tietokoneella

This article discusses an experiment which we are conducting in the field of Finnish as a second language. We are developing an Internet-based program that learners of Finnish can use to assess their own writing skills. The program code originally comes from the DIALANG project, which is developing a diagnostic language assessment system for 14 languages for the Internet. We selected two new writing tasks for the program, and constructed related sets of benchmark performances to enable the learners to assess their own abilities. In the article, we first discuss the concepts of learner autonomy and self-assessment, in other words the theoretical framework that underlies the program. This is …
Enabling leadership promotes a positive working climate
2013
This study looks for current information about factors related to educational leadership that help to promote a positive working climate and which may ultimately influence the employees' overall well-being at work. The study focuses on finding out what is the role of open interaction for the development of a positive working climate. Crucial information about well-being promoting leadership practices is needed in the Finnish context. Previous research shows that employees' experiences of well-being at work in educational organizations vary. Promoting employee well-being has become a crucial leadership issue in the Finnish society. Leadership training has been found to have a key position in…
