Phenolic metabolites from 5,000-year-old coprolites of Myotragus balearicus, an extinct insular bovid

Abstract To date, the identification of polyphenols in the archaeological and palaeontological record has been limited. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the presence of flavonoid and phenolic metabolites from non-mineralised coprolites belonging to a non-human mammal species. Myotragus balearicus is the last species of a bovid lineage that became extinct during the Holocene in the western Mediterranean basin. In this work, we characterize the phenolic metabolites of M. balearicus coprolites for the first time. Free radical scavenging capability, antioxidant activity and chemical constituents of Pyrola incarnata Fisch. leaves

Abstract In the present study, the crude extract and its four fractions of petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, water from Pyrola incarnata Fisch. leaves were prepared and their antioxidant activities were investigated by using four antioxidant assays in vitro. The ethyl acetate fraction showed remarkably strong antioxidant activities on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, ABTS radical scavenging, reducing power and β-carotene-linoleic acid bleaching, which were almost comparable to capacities of the positive controls (VC and BHT). Abstract A fungal endophyte MD89 with obvious antioxidant activities was isolated from pigeon pea and identified as Chaetomium globosum by ITS sequence. Different fractions from MD89 culture were compared and evaluated by total phenol (TP) content, total flavonoid (TFL) content, DPPH radical scavenging, reducing power and lipid peroxidation assays, respectively. Results showed that EtOAc extracts had high content of TP and TFL, and strong antioxidant activities (IC 50 value was 6.87, 15.19, 16.78 μg/mL, respectively). Epidemiological surveys have shown an inverse relationship between the intake of fruit and the incidence of coronary heart disease and some type of cancer. Samples of tree hybrid mandarins (´Clemenvilla`, ´Ortanique` and ´Nadorcott`) were employed to determine the physicochemical properties (increase of conductivity, brix° and pH), bioactive compounds (total phenolic, flavonoid, ascorbic acid and carotenoids content) and antioxidant capacity (DPPH and TEAC) of peels. Mandarin peel extracts were prepared employing ultrasound assisted extraction (400 W, 80% v/v duty cycle, 40ºC). The results were compared to the values of control extraction method. Summary The methanolic extract from the sporophytes of the moss Ceratodon purpureus (L.) Brid . (Ditrichaceae) contains one flavonoid. It was isolated and purified by means of paper chromatography and identified by cochromatography with authentic material and by UV-spectral data as luteolin. No glycosides of either luteolin or another flavonoid could be detected.

Abstract Caffeoyltartronic acid and other eleven phenolic com pounds were identified in the MeOH extract of Chondrilla juncea: the flavonoids luteolin, luteolin-7-glucoside, luteolin-7-galactosylglucuronide and quercetin-3-galactoside; the phenolic acids protocatechuic, caffeic, chlorogenic, isochlorogenic and isoferulic and the coumarins cichoriin and aesculetin. The taxonomic im plications of these com pounds have been discussed.
