Identification of the novel Kawasaki 2014 GII.17 human norovirus strain in Italy, 2015

2015

Surveillance of noroviruses in Italy identified the novel GII.17 human norovirus strain, Kawasaki 2014, in February 2015. This novel strain emerged as a major cause of gastroenteritis in Asia during 2014/15, replacing the pandemic GII.4 norovirus strain Sydney 2012, but being reported only sporadically elsewhere. This novel strain is undergoing fast diversification and continuous monitoring is important to understand the evolution of noroviruses and to implement the future strategies on norovirus vaccines.

Evaluation of irreversible dynamic thermoporation as a tool for the deduction of bacterial load in food matrices (Note) [Valutazione della termoporaz…

2015

Polymorphonuclear leukocyte membrane fluidity and cytosolic Ca2+ content at baseline and after activation in essential hypertension

2004

Obiective: To examine in essential hypertension (EH) the polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) membrane fluidity and cytosolic Ca2+ content at baseline and after in vitro activation. Subjects and methods: In 45 hypertensive subjects (27 men and 18 women; mean age 45.8 +/- 11.3 years) we evaluated the PMN membrane fluidity, obtained by labeling PMNs with 1-[4-(trimethyImino)phenyl]-6phenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (TMA-DPH) and considering the TMA-DPH polarization degree, inversely related to the membrane fluidity, and the PMN cytosolic Ca2+ content, obtained by marking PMNs with Fura 2-AM. These PMN parameters were examined at baseline and after in vitro activation (prolonged for 5 min) with two agents…

RENAL SALT WASTING: UNA SINDROME DA INAPPROPRIATA SECREZIONE DI URODILATINA? UNO STUDIO PILOTA

2022

Diffusion modeling of COVID-19 under lockdown

2021

Viral immune evasion by sequence variation is a significant barrier to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine design and coronavirus disease-2019 diffusion under lockdown are unpredictable with subsequent waves. Our group has developed a computational model rooted in physics to address this challenge, aiming to predict the fitness landscape of SARS-CoV-2 diffusion using a variant of the bidimensional Ising model (2DIMV) connected seasonally. The 2DIMV works in a closed system composed of limited interaction subjects and conditioned by only temperature changes. Markov chain Monte Carlo method shows that an increase in temperature implicates reduced virus diffusi…

On the history of torsional stress concentrations in shafts: From electrical analogies to numerical methods

2014

This article proposes a retrospective on experimental and numerical methods developed throughout the past century to solve the torsion problem in shafts, with particular emphasis on the determination of shear stress concentration factors in discontinuities of typical use in shaft design. This article, in particular, presents the theory and related solutions distinguishing between two classes of geometries: shafts with constant cross section and axisymmetric shafts with variable diameter. Emphasis is given to approaches based on physical analog methods and, in particular, those based on electrical analogies proposed since about 1925. Experimental methods based on structural physical models …

Experimental Studies Regarding the Mechanical Behaviour of Silicon-Coated and Uncoated P.A. 6.6 Fabrics

2014

These paper aims to present an experimental study for determining the mechanical properties of woven fabrics used for airbags manufacturing. In order to realise the study, there were chosen two types of fabric, one that is coated with silicon and one that is uncoated. The experimental tests that were carried out were uniaxial tension tests for samples extracted on the warp and on the weft direction, the Bias test, a test specific for shear loads and the dome test, a test specific for biaxial loads. For the uniaxial tension test the force-displacement curve was obtained and the maximum values of the loads and the displacement. For the last two tests (bias test and dome test) there have been …

Do we understand the solid-like elastic properties of confined liquids?

2021

Recently, in polymeric liquids, unexpected solid-like shear elasticity has been discovered, which gave rise to a controversial discussion about its origin (1⇓–3). The observed solid-like shear modulus G depends strongly on the distance L between the plates of the rheometer according to a power law G ∝ L − p with a nonuniversal exponent ranging between p = 2 and p = 3 . Zaccone and Trachenko (4) have published an article in which they claim to explain these findings by a nonaffine contribution to the liquid shear modulus. The latter is represented as Δ G ∝ − ∑ λ = L , T 1 V … [↵][1]1To whom correspondence may be addressed. Email: giancarlo.ruocco{at}roma1.infn.it. [1]: #xref-corresp-1-1
