Community effects allow bioelectrical reprogramming of cell membrane potentials in multicellular aggregates: Model simulations.

2020

Bioelectrical patterns are established by spatiotemporal correlations of cell membrane potentials at the multicellular level, being crucial to development, regeneration, and tumorigenesis. We have conducted multicellular simulations on bioelectrical community effects and intercellular coupling in multicellular aggregates. The simulations aim at establishing under which conditions a local heterogeneity consisting of a small patch of cells can be stabilized against a large aggregate of surrounding identical cells which are in a different bioelectrical state. In this way, instructive bioelectrical information can be persistently encoded in spatiotemporal patterns of separated domains with diff…

In vitro evaluation of probiotic strains for lactic acid production

2019

Background The growing interest on usage of probiotic lactobacilli in maintaining oral health has posed number of questions on its probable side effects. One such consideration could be an increased acid production in dental plaque, in turn leading to dental caries. Thus, the aim of this study was to comparatively evaluate the lactic acid producing ability of L. acidophilus and L. plantarum with and without dental plaque. Material and Methods The study consisted of five groups: 3 control groups (Supragingival plaque, L. acidophilus and L. plantarum) and 2 test groups (Supragingival plaque with L. acidophilus and Supragingival plaque with L. plantarum). 26 samples for each group were collect…

An overview of the analytical methods for the determination of organic ultraviolet filters in biological fluids and tissues.

2012

Organic UV filters are chemical compounds added to cosmetic sunscreen products in order to protect users from UV solar radiation. The need of broad-spectrum protection to avoid the deleterious effects of solar radiation has triggered a trend in the cosmetic market of including these compounds not only in those exclusively designed for sun protection but also in all types of cosmetic products. Different studies have shown that organic UV filters can be absorbed through the skin after topical application, further metabolized in the body and eventually excreted or bioaccumulated. These percutaneous absorption processes may result in various adverse health effects, such as genotoxicity caused b…

Clinical Course and Significance of the Novel FLT3-Y842C Mutation in a Patient with AML Treated with PKC412 Monotherapy.

2004

Abstract We recently identified a novel mutation (Y842C) within the tyrosine kinase domain of FLT3 in a patient treated with PKC410 monotherapy (ASH 2003, # 4681). Here, we present follow up studies including the clinical course of the patient and frequency analysis in 110 patients with AML. In addition, we characterized the novel mutation using overexpression of FLT3-Y842C in 32D cells. AML M2 was diagnosed in a 63 year old, male patient in 1993. After having experienced his second relapse upon standard therapy the patient was refractory to alemtuzumab treatment. Due to reduced performance status the patient was not eligible to standard chemotherapy and was enrolled into a phase II trial i…

Synthesis and sorptive properties of molecularly imprinted polymer for simultaneous isolation of catecholamines and their metabolites from biological…

2021

Simultaneous quantitative analysis of catecholamines (CAs) and their respective acid metabolites in biological fluids can become a powerful tool for diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. However, selective sample preparation procedure is necessary to isolate the aforementioned analytes from the matrix. Therefore, we propose a synthetic strategy for the preparation of a molecularly imprinted sorbent with binding sites for both CAs and their respective acid metabolites. The synthesis combines noncovalent and semicovalent imprinting methods. Methylenebisacrylamide, 4-vynilbenzyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium (3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)acetate, and 3-phenylpropylacrylate were used as the cross-linke…

Development of a new multi-analyte assay for the simultaneous detection of opioids in serum and other body fluids using liquid chromatography-tandem …

2015

Abstract A liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry method using electrospray ionization in positive ionization mode was developed for the simultaneous detection of multiple opioid-type drugs in plasma. The presented assay allows the quantitative determination of alfentanil, buprenorphine, codeine, desomorphine, dextromethorphan, dextrorphan, dihydrocodeine, dihydromorphine, ethylmorphine, fentanyl, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, methadone, morphine, naloxone, naltrexone, oxycodone, oxymorphone, pentazocine, pethidine, pholcodine, piritramide, remifentanil, sufentanil, and tramadol as well as the metabolites 6-monoacetylmorphine, bisnortilidine, morphine-3-glucuronide, morphine-6-glucuro…

Organochlorine residue analysis of commercial milks by capillary gas chromatography

1991

The determination of organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls in milks requires the use of efficient extraction methods. A rapid procedure has been developed, based on extraction of organochlorine residues from milk on to octadecylsilica solid phase extraction cartridges and elution with hexane. The addition of different organic solvents to the milk before solid phase extraction has been studied. The use of methanol to disrupt the fat globules enables almost complete recovery of the residues with minimum extraction of fatty substances. Recovery experiments were performed for eighteen compounds present at ppb levels in whole, two per cent, and skimmed milks. The average recove…

Debates with Small Transparent Quantum Verifiers

2014

We study a model where two opposing provers debate over the membership status of a given string in a language, trying to convince a weak verifier whose coins are visible to all. We show that the incorporation of just two qubits to an otherwise classical constant-space verifier raises the class of debatable languages from at most NP to the collection of all Turing-decidable languages (recursive languages). When the verifier is further constrained to make the correct decision with probability 1, the corresponding class goes up from the regular languages up to at least E.
