β-Catenin Activation Regulates Tissue Growth Non–Cell Autonomously in the Hair Stem Cell Niche
2014
Coordinated Hair Growth Wnt/β-catenin signaling is a key pathway that plays a conserved role in regulating stem cell function during adult tissue regeneration. Using time-lapse imaging of live mice, Deschene et al. (p. 1353 ) show that genetic activation of β-catenin within hair follicle stem cells generates axes of hair growth by coordinated cell divisions and cell movements, even when the normal niches—the dermal papillae—are laser-ablated. Activated β-catenin enhances Wnt ligand secretion, and these ligands can then activate Wnt signaling in adjacent cells that do not have activated β-catenin, indicating how activated stem cells could influence neighboring cells during normal growth and …
The effects of 12-week progressive strength training on strength, functional capacity, metabolic biomarkers, and serum hormone concentrations in heal…
2018
Previous findings suggest that performing strength training (ST) in the evening may provide greater benefit for young individuals. However, this may not be optimal for the older population. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a 12-week ST program performed in the morning vs. evening on strength, functional capacity, metabolic biomarker and basal hormone concentrations in older women. Thirty-one healthy older women (66 ± 4 years, 162 ± 4 cm, 75 ± 13 kg) completed the study. Participants trained in the morning (M) (07:30, n = 10), in the evening (E) (18:00, n = 10), or acted as a non-training control group (C) (n = 11). Both intervention groups performed whole-body strengt…

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced ovarian failure in patients with lymphoma: 1-year follow-up of a pr…
2013
PURPOSE To assess the efficacy of gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) in preventing chemotherapy-induced ovarian failure in patients treated for Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphoma within the setting of a multicenter, randomized, prospective trial. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients age 18 to 45 years were randomly assigned to receive either the GnRHa triptorelin plus norethisterone (GnRHa group) or norethisterone alone (control group) concomitantly with alkylating agents containing chemotherapy. The primary end point was the premature ovarian failure (POF) rate (follicle-stimulating hormone [FSH] ≥ 40 IU/L) after 1 year of follow-up. Results Eighty-four of 129 randomly assigned patients …
TGF-β superfamily signaling is essential for tooth and hair morphogenesis and differentiation
2007
Members of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) superfamily of signaling molecules are involved in the regulation of many developmental processes that involve the interaction between mesenchymal and epithelial tissues. Smad7 is a potent inhibitor of many members of the TGF-beta family, notably TGF-beta and activin. In this study, we show that embryonic overexpression of Smad7 in stratified epithelia using a keratin 5 promoter, results in severe morphogenetic defects in skin and teeth and leads to embryonic and perinatal lethality. To further analyze the functions of Smad7 in epithelial tissues of adult mice, we used an expression system that allowed a controlled overexpression of …
Morphology of follicle cells of Libellulidae (Odonata)
2011
In libellulids, mature oocyte size varies within and between individual ovaries. The regulating mechanism is not yet understood. Variations in the contents of the follicle cells, and thereby their ability to secrete material into the oocyte, might explain some of the observed differences in oocyte size. We therefore investigated the follicle cell surface, the interstitial space width between follicle cells and between follicle cells and oocytes, the number of nuclei, and the cell compartment proportions using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In all investigated species, the follicle cells were covered by a basal lamina. We found cytoplasmic microvilli and septate junctions. As…
DNA integrity, growth pattern, spindle formation, chromosomal constitution and imprinting patterns of mouse oocytes from vitrified pre-antral follicl…
2010
Cryopreservation of follicles for culture and oocyte growth and maturation in vitro provides an option to increase the number of fertilizable oocytes and restore fertility in cases where transplantation of ovarian tissue poses a risk for malignant cell contamination. Vitrification for cryopreservation is fast and avoids ice crystal formation. However, the influences of exposure to high concentrations of cryoprotectants on follicle development, oocyte growth and maturation, and particularly, on the DNA integrity and methylation imprinting has not been studied systematically. Follicle survival and development, DNA damage, oocyte growth patterns, maturation, spindle formation and chromosomal c…
Hypogonadism in β-thalassemic adolescents: A characteristic pituitary-gonadal impairment. The ineffectiveness of long-term iron chelation therapy
1990
The pituitary-gonadal function was studied in 18 beta-thalassemic female adolescents, 8 with delayed puberty and 10 with primary amenorrhea, treated with repeated transfusions and long-term iron chelation therapy by subcutaneous infusion. A 100 micrograms gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) test, a double-bolus GnRH test after estradiol administration in non-responders, a 400 micrograms thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) test and a 'high dose' human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG) test were performed. LH and FSH peak levels were significantly lower in thalassemic patients than in controls, both in the 100 micrograms GnRH test (LH was 4.3 +/- 0.7 mIU/ml vs 40.8 +/- 6.0 mIU/ml and FSH 3.3 +/-…
Primordial odontogenic tumor with prominent calcifications: a rare case report
2019
Primordial odontogenic tumor (POT) is a rare odontogenic tumor. It is a new entity in the latest edition of the World Health Organization classification in 2017. In the English-language literature, only 14 cases have been documented. Most POTs show a well-defined unilocular radiolucency surrounding a crown of an unerupted molar, resembling a dentigerous cyst. Microscopically, POT may be difficult to distinguish from odontogenic myxoma, ameloblastic fibroma, hyperplastic dental follicle and dental papilla. Here, we reported a case of POT in a 17-year old female presenting with an asymptomatic bony hard swelling at the left posterior mandible. Interestingly, this case shows unique radiographi…
Biochemical approach on the conservation of drug molecules during hair fiber formation
1997
A biochemical concept for the endogenous incorporation of drug molecules into growing hair is presented. It is based on the principles of transport across biomembranes, on the principles of biotransformation and drug melanin affinity. The approach gives explanations for current observations in hair analysis, which up to date have not been understood sufficiently. Phenomena such as the ratio of parent drug to metabolite in hair, the dependence of incorporation on the physico-chemical properties of the drug, the independence of drug incorporation on active melanogenesis (incorporation into non-pigmented hair) as well as the dependence of drug content on hair pigmentation are elucidated.
