Polish highlander jokes and their targets

The aim of the paper is to identify the characteristic features of jokes about Polish highlanders and analyse them to isolate the comic script of a highlander. This group of jokes is treated as a good illustration of Christie Davies’s ethnic jokes theory concerning canny versus stupid and centre versus periphery oppositions, as well as mind over matter. A particular type of reasoning and the use of regional dialect are distinctive features of the joke targets that make it possible to perceive these jokes as a culturally specific phenomenon. The paper discusses the theme of a stupid husband in three texts of French Realism and Naturalism: a novel by Gustave Flaubert and two short stories by Emile Zola and Guy de Maupassant. The main reference for the analysis is a paper by Stefan Symotiuk who divides the category of “fools” into several subcategories, according to reasons and signs of their stupidity. In agreement with Symotiuk’s thought, Flaubert’s Charles Bovary can be considered as a “blockhead”, dull but always glad with himself; Zola’s Mr Chabre is a “dolt”, heavily thinking and likely to hoax; finally, Maupassant’s Mr Lantin is a “dupe”, easily cheated because unable to see things as they are. The author undertakes to discuss the problem of matrimonial cheats who have acted on the territory of Poland. The first of the presented cases of seducers is that of Julian Jerzy Kalibabka who was active at the turn of the 1970s and the 1980s – probably the most famous of the Polish matrimonial deceivers. It is his surname which has even been made synonymous with seducers-cheats. Next, the author gives examples of deceivers who were active in the days closer to contemporary time and who – in their dealings – have been able to avail themselves of the possibilities which came along with the advance of the Internet, social media and dating websites. The article attempts to explain the purpose of investing characters of tales, fables and animations, with the name “silly”. The author analyzes such examples of works that show various aspects of the phenomenon of foolishness: naivety, infantility, lack of elementary knowledge, performing an activity against logic and laws of nature (e.g., drowning of fish). An important element of the argument is also presentation of the significance and influence of the display of stupidity on receivers. Fenomen Świętego Głupca jest jednym ze szczególnych przejawów duchowości, wspólnym dla religii abrahamowych. Dogłębna analiza korzeni i różnych egzemplifikacji tego zjawiska (prorok, jurodiwy i sufi), jakiej dokonano w artykule, pozwoli szerzej poznać opisywaną postać, a także, przynajmniej częściowo, zmienić negatywne skojarzenia, jakie przywodzi na myśl głupota sama w sobie. Wyjątkowość Świętego Głupca może być przyczynkiem do refleksji na temat miejsca człowieka wyobcowanego w społeczeństwie, oddziaływania i łamania tabu oraz uświadomienia sobie wspólnych źródeł wielkich religii, o których ich walczący wyznawcy zdają się zapominać.

Dans cet article, nous proposons une lecture du Pendule de Foucault qui vise à extraire du texte littéraire une théorie de la stupidité et de la raison.
