ChemInform Abstract: Tandem Cross Enyne Metathesis (CEYM)-Intramolecular Diels-Alder Reaction (IMDAR). An Easy Entry to Linear Bicyclic Scaffolds.
2015
A new tandem cross enyne metathesis (CEYM)–intramolecular Diels–Alder reaction (IMDAR) has been carried out. It involves conjugated ketones, esters or amides bearing a remote olefin and aromatic alkynes as the starting materials. The overall process enables the preparation of a small family of linear bicyclic scaffolds in a very simple manner with moderate to good levels of diastereoselectivity. This methodology constitutes one of the few examples that employ olefins differently than ethylene in tandem CEYM–IMDAR protocols.
Modeling hole transfer in DNA: Low-lying excited states of oxidized cytosine homodimer and cytosine–adenine heterodimer
2008
Abstract Charge transport in DNA strands has been studied by characterizing on theoretical grounds the lowest doublet states of the oxidized cytosine homodimer (CC + ) and adenine–cytosine heterodimer (CA + ) along the intermolecular separation of the monomers. The high-level quantum-chemical ab initio CASPT2 method and accurate one-electron basis sets have been employed. Both cationic species are found to be bound with comparable binding energies as those of neutral CC and reduced CC − . The results suggest that charge transport in DNA and the distinct photophysical attributes related to the polymer can be described within the framework of a unified theory. A cooperative micro-hopping mech…
Mechanical and electroconductive properties of spatially distributed double stranded DNA arrays on Au (111)
2008
Abstract Conductive AFM was used to investigate electroconductivity through 10 nm long double stranded DNA molecules in mixed monolayers of thioalkylated-DNA and mercaptohexanol (MCH) on Au (111) surface. The distribution of DNA molecules on the surface was analyzed by tapping mode AFM. Measurements performed in lift mode confirmed that the DNA molecules protrude from the surface rather than lie horizontally adsorbed on the interface. The optimal conductivity measurement time, which is shorter than the mechanical relaxation time of oligonucleotide duplexes, was determined. It was concluded that oligonucleotide duplexes have a resistance of the order of ~ 2 Ω ⁎ m at 1 V.
Genome-wide association study identifies five loci associated with lung function
2009
Pulmonary function measures are heritable traits that predict morbidity and mortality and define chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We tested genome-wide association with forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)) and the ratio of FEV(1) to forced vital capacity (FVC) in the SpiroMeta consortium (n = 20,288 individuals of European ancestry). We conducted a meta-analysis of top signals with data from direct genotyping (n < or = 32,184 additional individuals) and in silico summary association data from the CHARGE Consortium (n = 21,209) and the Health 2000 survey (n < or = 883). We confirmed the reported locus at 4q31 and identified associations with FEV(1) or FEV(1)/FVC and co…
Characterization of the CtsR stress response regulon in Lactobacillus plantarum.
2010
ABSTRACT Lactobacillus plantarum ctsR was characterized. ctsR was found to be cotranscribed with clpC and induced in response to various abiotic stresses. ctsR deletion conferred a heat-sensitive phenotype with peculiar cell morphological features. The transcriptional pattern of putative CtsR regulon genes was examined in the Δ ctsR mutant. Direct CtsR-dependent regulation was demonstrated by DNA-binding assays using recombinant CtsR and the promoters of the ctsR - clpC operon and hsp1 .
Stick-slip motion and plastic flow of a two-dimensional colloidal crystal confined to moving corrugated rigid boundaries
2013
Computer simulations are presented where a model for a two-dimensional colloidal crystal confined to corrugated walls is exposed to a steady-state shear deformation. Following up on an earlier study, where average velocity profiles of the particles in the crystal across the slit have been obtained, we now analyse the time dependence of the particle motions and of the resulting shear forces. We discuss the extent to which the resulting irregular and damped oscillatory motions can be associated with stick-slip motions familiar from friction phenomena.
Shakedown optimum design of reinforced concrete framed structures
1994
Structures subjected to variable repeated loads can undergo the shakedown or adaptation phenomenon,-which prevents them from collapse but may cause lack of serviceability, for the plastic deformations developed, although finite, as shakedown occurrence postulates, may exceed some maximum values imposed by external ductility criteria. This paper is devoted to the optimal design of reinforced concrete structures, subjected to variable and repeated loads. For such structures the knowledge of the actual values taken by the plastic deformations, at shakedown occurrence, is a crucial issue. An approximate assessment of such plastic deformations is needed, which is herein provided in the shape of …
Optimal tuning of tuned liquid column damper systems in random vibration by means of an approximate formulation
2014
Passive control devices are often added to slender and flexible systems in order to increase their structural safety. Several types of devices have been proposed in order to reduce the dynamic responses of different kind of structural systems. Among them, the tuned liquid column damper (TLCD) proved to be very effective in reducing vibration of various type of structures by means of a combined action which involves the motion of the liquid mass within the tube. The restoring force, in particular, is produced by the force of gravity acting on the liquid and the damping effect is generated by the hydrodynamic head losses that arise during the motion of the liquid inside the TLCD. Since the in…
Virtual Resource Allocation for Wireless Virtualized Heterogeneous Network with Hybrid Energy Supply
2022
In this work, two novel virtual user association and resource allocation algorithms are introduced for a wireless virtualized heterogeneous network with hybrid energy supply. In the considered system, macro base stations (MBSs) are supplied by the grid power and small base stations (SBSs) have the energy harvesting capability in addition to the grid power supplement. Multiple infrastructure providers (InPs) own the physical resources, i.e., BSs and radio resources. The Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) are able to recent these resources from the InPs and operate the virtualized resources for providing services to different users. In particular, aiming to maximize the overall utility …
Synthesis of 2-isoxazolines: enantioselective and racemic methods based on conjugate additions of oximes.
2010
The formation of 3-unsubstituted 2-isoxazolines by means of condensation reactions between α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and oximes proceeds readily in the presence of catalytic amounts of anilinium salts. Mechanistically, the process involves a fast conjugate addition of the oxime and a slower intramolecular oxime-transfer reaction. The rate of oxime transfer was found to correlate with the acidity of the catalyst. This finding enabled us to discover an enantioselective process in which the fragile conjugate-addition product generated in the first stage is rapidly cyclized into the stable isoxazoline under acidic conditions, with conservation of enantiomeric excess. In summary, herein we descr…
