Delayed and incomplete treatment may result in dural fistula development in children with Vein of Galen malformation
2017
The association of dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVF) in children with Vein of Galen malformation (VGM) has recently been reported for the first time. In a larger series of cases treated with transarterial NBCA embolization, 30% had DAVF. We wanted to analyze the development of DAVF in our cohort of children with VGM and to evaluate whether their occurrence depends on different treatment timing and embolic materials. We analyzed 43 VGM cases treated with a combined transarterial and transvenous approach between 2003 and 2016. In our early series until 2011, we used coils solely in 21 children. Since 2012, 22 children were treated with the combination of coils and Onyx. In the early series…
Altered REDD1, myostatin, and Akt/mTOR/FoxO/MAPK signaling in streptozotocin-induced diabetic muscle atrophy
2011
Type 1 diabetes, if poorly controlled, leads to skeletal muscle atrophy, decreasing the quality of life. We aimed to search highly responsive genes in diabetic muscle atrophy in a common diabetes model and to further characterize associated signaling pathways. Mice were killed 1, 3, or 5 wk after streptozotocin or control. Gene expression of calf muscles was analyzed using microarray and protein signaling with Western blotting. We identified translational repressor protein REDD1 (regulated in development and DNA damage responses) that increased seven- to eightfold and was associated with muscle atrophy in diabetes. The diabetes-induced increase in REDD1 was confirmed at the protein level. …
Proton sponge lead halides containing 1D polyoctahedral chains
2021
Hybrid one-dimensional lead halides, containing the protonated 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene moiety (C14H19N2, monoprotonated "proton sponge"), were prepared by simple one-pot methods and investigated in terms of crystal structure, morphology, thermal stability and electronic properties. The as-precipitated (C14H19N2)PbBr3 and (C14H19N2)PbI3 species are isostructural and crystallize in the orthorhombic Pbca space group, resulting in 1D crystal phases with ([PbX3](-))(infinity) chains (built by face-sharing [PbX6] octahedra; X = Br, I), among which the (C14H19N2)(+) cations are inserted. The two compounds display complete miscibility in the solid state: both (C14H19N2)PbI2Br and (C14H19N…
Naphthalimide imidazolium-based supramolecular hydrogels as bioimaging and theranostic soft materials
2020
1,8-Naphthalimide-based imidazolium salts differing for the alkyl chain length and the nature of the anion were synthesized and characterized to obtain fluorescent probes for bioimaging applications. First, their self-assembly behavior and gelling ability were investigated in water and water/dimethyl sulfoxide binary mixtures. Only salts having longer alkyl chains were able to give supramolecular hydrogels, whose properties were investigated by using a combined approach of fluorescence, resonance light scattering, and rheology measurements. Morphological information was obtained by scanning electron microscopy. In addition, conductive properties of organic salts in solution and gel state we…
Evaluation of aging processes of petroleum asphalt cements by solid state electrochemical monitoring
2018
Abstract The changes in the chemistry of organosulfur compounds from asphalt cements during aging are studied using solid state voltammetry of immobilized microparticles. Five Brazilian asphalt cements were evaluated after three forced aging processes: Rolling Thin Film Oven Test (RTFOT), Pressure Aging Vessel (PAV) and SUNTEST. It was possible to identify the presence of thiophenes, sulfides and sulfoxides in the different samples and the reactional changes during the aging processes were proposed. Voltammetric data, supported by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, indicate that aging asphalts involve the increase of the proportion of sulfoxide and thiophene components and that polythiophene compounds …
Inhibitoren der Korrosion (12). Nachweis der Bildung von Sekundärinhibitoren mit Hilfe der „Spezifischen Keim-Methode” von Karagounis
1972
Identification, by the “specific nucleus method according to Karagounis”, of the formation of secondary inhibitors Various onium…
Multidrug and broad-spectrum cephalosporin resistance among Salmonella enterica serotype enteritidis clinical isolates in southern Italy.
2002
ABSTRACT From 1992 to 1997, only six sporadic isolates of Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis from patients with cases of gastroenteritis in southern Italy exhibited resistance to broad-spectrum cephalosporins. Five isolates produced SHV-12, and one isolate encoded a class C β-lactamase. The bla SHV-12 gene was located in at least two different self-transferable plasmids, one of which also carried a novel class 1 integron.
Pulsed electric field (PEF) recovery of biomolecules from Chlorella: Extract efficiency, nutrient relative value, and algae morphology analysis
2023
This study investigated the effects of pulsed electric field (PEF) (3 kV/cm, 44 pulses, 99 kJ/kg), solvent (H2O or 50 % DMSO) and time (0, 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 min) on the extraction of Chlorella antioxidant biomolecules and minerals. The results showed that PEF treatment increased the biomolecules recovery. For the extraction time of 120 min, more proteins and polyphenols were obtained using water, while more chlorophyll a and b, and carotenoids were obtained using 50 % DMSO as the extraction solvent. The extracts mineral concentration (PEF vs control) were analysed including Mg, P, Ca, Fe and Zn, and the Relative Nutrient Values results indicated that Chlorella H2O-extracts cou…
Syntheses, crystal structures, and oxidative DNA cleavage of some Cu(II) complexes of 5-amino-3-pyridin-2-yl-1,2,4-triazole
2004
Three new monomeric Cu(II) complexes of 5-amino-3-pyridin-2-yl-1,2,4-triazole (Hapt), [Cu(Hapt)(H(2)O)(2)(SO(4))] (1), [Cu(Hapt)(2)(H(2)O)(NO(3))](NO(3)) (2), and [Cu(Hapt)(2)(NCS-N)](NCS).H(2)O (3), have been prepared and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. One distorted [CuN(2)O(2)+O(')] square-pyramidal (1), one distorted [CuN(3)O+N(')+O(')] octahedral (2), and one distorted [CuN(4)+N(')] intermediate between square-pyramidal and trigonal-bipyramidal (3) coordination configuration were found and are suggested to be due to the chelating nature of the ligand, which interacts with Cu(II) through the N4(triazole) and N(pyridine) atoms. Spectral properties of these chelates are…
Bleomycin Exerts Ambivalent Antitumor Immune Effect by Triggering Both Immunogenic Cell Death and Proliferation of Regulatory T Cells
2013
International audience; Bleomycin (BLM) is an anticancer drug currently used for the treatment of testis cancer and Hodgkin lymphoma. This drug triggers cancer cell death via its capacity to generate radical oxygen species (ROS). However, the putative contribution of anticancer immune responses to the efficacy of BLM has not been evaluated. We make here the observation that BLM induces immunogenic cell death. In particular, BLM is able to induce ROS-mediated reticulum stress and autophagy, which result in the surface exposure of chaperones, including calreticulin and ERp57, and liberation of HMBG1 and ATP. BLM induces anti-tumor immunity which relies on calreticulin, CD8(+) T cells and inte…
