Nonenzymatic glycation reaction of folate with reducing sugars: A case study on [6S]-5-methyltetrahydrofolate and fructose

In the Maillard reaction, free amino groups react with reducing sugars to form nonenzymatic glycation products. It has recently been shown that in the presence of reducing sugars (i.e. fructose) folic acid is subjected to a non-enzymatic glycation reaction, which may represent an important pathway of folate degradation besides the established oxidative degradation pathways. Stability of levan produced by Zymomonas mobilis

Abstract The stability of levan produced by Zymomonas mobilis 113 “S” was investigated during storage of culture liquid at different pH and temperatures. Levan was not degraded if stored in a culture liquid for 120 h at 30 or 25 °C, but at 55 or 60 °C the degree of degradation was inversely proportional to pH. Cell biomass and levan sediment components did not cause the degradation of levan. The influence of organic acids (lactic-, acetic-, and gluconic) and HCl as levan hydrolyzing agents at pH 3.7, temperature 30 °C or 55 °C was investigated in a model solution. Carbohydrate availability affects growth and metabolism in peach fruit

Along with sucrose, sorbitol represents the main photosynthetic product and form of translocated carbon in peach. This study aimed at determining whether peach fruit carbohydrate metabolism is affected by changes in source-sink balance, and specifically whether sorbitol or sucrose availability regulates fruit enzyme activities and growth. In various trials, different levels of assimilate availability to growing fruits were induced in vivo, by varying crop load of entire trees, leaf:fruit ratio (L:F) of fruiting shoots, or by interrupting the phloem stream (girdling) to individual fruits. Administration of a Synbiotic to Free-Living Elderly and Evaluation of Serum Cytokines. A Pilot Study

Ten free-living elderly were administered with a synbiotic [fermented milk containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus Gorbach and Goldin (LGG)] and oligofructose as a prebiotic for one month. Serum cytokines were evaluated before (T(0)) and after (T(1)) synbiotic administration. At T(0), values of Interleukin (IL)-12, IL-6, IL-10, IL-1beta and Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF)-alpha were lower than normal controls, with the exception of IL-8, thus confirming previous results on the impairment of both innate and adaptive responses in elderly. Caseicin, a bacteriocin from Lactobacillus casei.

The intracellular bacteriocin caseicin 80 was purified from cell extracts of Lactobacillus casei strain B80. It is a thermolabile protein with an apparent molar mass of 42 kDa. As no plasmids were observed in the bacteriocinogenic strain it is assumed that caseicin is encoded by the bacterial chromosome. Using 14C-labelled precursors it was found that biosynthesis of DNA and proteins was influenced by caseicin but this inhibition is probably not the primary effect. The incorporation of fructose but not of glucose into cellular material was inhibited by caseicin.

Comparative study of reflectance cells for PLS-FTIR determination of sugars in soft drinks

A comparative study has been carried out between a horizontal Attenuated Total Reflectance (h-ATR) cell and a Cylindrical Internal Reflection (CIR) cell (CIRCLE cell). Both cells were employed for the determination of glucose, fructose, sucrose and total sugar in soft drinks and fruit juices using absorbance measurements at two resolution values (4 and 8 cm–1). Data were processed by Partial Least Squares regression (PLS). Using a resolution of 4 cm–1, mean relative errors of prediction from 0.6% to 1.3% were obtained using the horizontal-ATR and from 0.6% to 2.8% using the CIRCLE cell resulting in a limit of detection from 0.03% in the case of sucrose to 0.21% for total sugar for the h-ATR…

Simultaneous quantification of the main organic acids and carbohydrates involved in tomato flavour using capillary zone electrophoresis

A capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) procedure for the simultaneous determination of the major organic acids (oxalate, malate and citrate) and carbohydrates (fructose, glucose and sucrose) in Lycopersicon fruits is reported. Comparison of this method with routine HPLC methods indicates that the CZE method offers several attractive features (speed, resolution, sensitivity and cost) which significantly improve the determination of these compounds. Detection limits were better than 1.6 µg ml−1 for organic acids and from 13 to 24 µg ml−1 for carbohydrates; repeatabilities were better than 2.1% for migration times and between 1.4 and 7.3% for peak areas. PLS-NIR determination of total sugar, glucose, fructose and sucrose in aqueous solutions of fruit juices

Abstract An analytical procedure has been developed for the direct determination of sugars in fruit juice samples. The method is based on the partial least-squares (PLS) treatment of first derivative near infrared (NIR) spectroscopic data obtained between 1200 and 2450 nm, using 1 mm pathlength cell and a multicomponent calibration set, including seven binary mixtures and 10 ternary mixtures of glucose, fructose and sucrose. The limit of detection values found are of the order of 0.2 g/100 ml for total sugar and 0.2, 0.4 and 0.5 g/100 ml for glucose, fructose and sucrose, respectively. Prophylaxis of hemicrania continua: two new cases effectively treated with topiramate.

Hemicrania continua (HC) is an uncommon and under-recognized primary headache disorder characterized by a strictly unilateral continuous headache of moderate intensity with possible exacerbations and associated with ipsilateral autonomic features. HC has generally a prompt and enduring response to indomethacin although 25% to 50% of treated patients develop gastrointestinal side effects.
