Prediction of Maxwell – Stefan diffusion coefficients in polymer – multicomponent fluid systems
2014
Abstract Calculations of mass fluxes in multicomponent fluids based on the system of generalized Maxwell–Stefan equations (GMSE) is preferably used because Maxwell–Stefan (M–S) diffusion coefficients are symmetrical and have a clear physical meaning, as they reflect the binary friction forces between compounds in the system. For the calculation of the mass transport of a multicomponent fluid in the polymer basing on GMSE, it is necessary to have M–S diffusion coefficients. This paper proposes a method that allows their calculation using widely available self-diffusion coefficients and binary diffusion coefficients for infinitely diluted mixtures. The proposed method was compared with the me…
Die bestimmung von sedimentationskoeffizient, diffusions-koeffizient und molekulargewicht von α-amylasen nach der methode des aktivitätstransportes
1965
Abstract Sedimentation and diffusion coefficients determined by optical methods on pure (crystallized) enzymes are compared with those obtained by activity measurements on the unpurified enzymes. On performing the experiments under suitable conditions, results of the two methods are in good agreement. The calculation of the molecular weights of the unpurified enzymes is somewhat uncertain because the partial specific volume in most cases is not accurately known.

Genotypic and Phenotypic Characteristics of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia Translocation Variants.
2020
Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a special disease entity of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The clinical use of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) has transformed APL into the most curable form of AML. The majority of APL cases are characterized by the fusion gene PML-RARA. Although the PML-RARA fusion gene can be detected in almost all APL cases, translocation variants of APL have been reported. To date, this is the most comprehensive review of these translocations, discussing 15 different variants. Reviewed genes involved in APL variants include: ZBTB16, NPM, NuMA, STAT5b, PRKAR1A, FIP1L1, BCOR, NABP1, TBLR1, GTF2I, IRF2BP2, FNDC3B, ADAMDTS17, STAT3, and TFG. The genotypic and phenotypic …
Virtual reality system for planning minimally invasive neurosurgery
2008
Object The authors report on their experience with a 3D virtual reality system for planning minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures. Methods Between October 2002 and April 2006, the authors used the Dextroscope (Volume Interactions, Ltd.) to plan neurosurgical procedures in 106 patients, including 100 with intracranial and 6 with spinal lesions. The planning was performed 1 to 3 days preoperatively, and in 12 cases, 3D prints of the planning procedure were taken into the operating room. A questionnaire was completed by the neurosurgeon after the planning procedure. Results After a short period of acclimatization, the system proved easy to operate and is currently used routinely for pre…
Perfusion MRI in normal and abnormal pituitary gland. A preliminary study.
1997
Perfusion MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the pituitary gland was performed in 20 healthy volunteers and 63 patients with various lesions involving the pituitary gland. All patients underwent sequential contrast-enhanced MRI using spoiled gradient recalled sequences with high temporal resolution (7 seconds). Four pituitary areas (pituitary stalk, posterior lobe, postero-superior, and antero-inferior adenohypophysis) were tested with a selected region of interest. Maximal contrast percentual variation was calculated. The timing of enhancement in normal patients matched perfectly with normal pituitary vascularization. Abnormal timing in pathological condition was investigated.
Physiological and metabolic actions of mycophenolate mofetil on cultured newborn rat cardiomyocytes in normoxia and in simulated ischemia
2004
Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is a new immunosuppressive drug used to reduce acute rejection after heart transplantation. As with other immunosuppressive drugs, MMF therapy is associated with several adverse effects. However, the direct effects of MMF on myocardial tissue has not been yet evaluated. The aim of the work was thus to evaluate the effects of MMF on isolated cardiomyocytes (CM) in normal conditions and in an in vitro model of simulated ischemia (SI; substrate-free hypoxia) and reperfusion (R; reoxygenation). Myocyte-enriched cultures were prepared from newborn rat heart ventricles. The transmembrane potentials were recorded using conventional microelectrodes and the cell contracti…
T cells expressing a chimeric antigen receptor that binds hepatitis B virus envelope proteins control virus replication in mice.
2013
Background & Aims Antiviral agents suppress hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication but do not clear the infection. A strong effector T-cell response is required to eradicate HBV, but this does not occur in patients with chronic infection. T cells might be directed toward virus-infected cells by expressing HBV-specific receptors and thereby clear HBV and help to prevent development of liver cancer. In mice, we studied whether redirected T cells can engraft after adoptive transfer, without prior T-cell depletion, and whether the large amounts of circulating viral antigens inactivate the transferred T cells or lead to uncontrolled immune-mediated damage. Methods CD8 + T cells were isolated from m…
Study and Modelling of the Vacuum Swing Adsorption (VSA) Process Employed in the Production of Oxygen
1999
An isothermal and non-equilibrium mathematical model was provided for the multi-component adsorption process. In addition, the software was developed for the VSA-based production of oxygen with the use of a CaX zeolite molecular sieve. The mathematical model and computer software were verified on the basis of experimental data. The study employed a test stand comprising two adsorption columns. The adsorption pressure P A = 150 and 135 kPa and desorption pressure P D = 20 kPa were adopted in the experiments. The tests produced oxygen with the purity of 90–94% O 2 (vol), at an efficiency of 55–73% and productivity of 570–850 kg O 2 per ton per day. The calculation results showed good consiste…
Sorption Kinetics of Xenon on MFI-Type Zeolite Molecular Sieves
1990
Kinetic uptake data for xenon adsorbed onto large and uniform silicalite-I crystals are presented over a temperature range of 121 K to 296 K. — Adsorption isotherms and corrected diffusion coefficients derived from the uptake curves are given. The heat of adsorption and activation energy of diffusion were estimated from the plots of reciprocal temperature against the logarithm of equilibrium pressure and corrected diffusion coefficients, respectively. — While the corrected diffusion coefficient is independent of coverage for the higher temperatures, it decreases significantly at the lower temperatures investigated (<170 K) when the limiting adsorption capacity has been reached. — Comparing …
