<title>Indentation creep and stress relaxation in amorphous As-S-Se and As-S films</title>

2001

The indentation creep in as-deposited and photopolymerized As- S-Se and As-S films has been investigated. The results show pronounced relaxation of mechanical stresses in the films at room temperature. The relationship (sigma) equals B (epsilon) m between the deformation rate and the stress is observed and the values of the deformation rate sensitivity exponent m < 1 are found. The creep rate was found to be dependent on deposition conditions of layers, applied indentation load, structural state of the material and light irradiation during the creep test.© (2001) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. REGULATORY ELEMENTS OF THE LEUKAEMIA INHIBITORY FACTOR (LIF) PROMOTER IN MURINE BONE MARROW STROMAL CELLS

1999

Leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF) plays an important role as a haematopoietically active cytokine. As described earlier in a murine model, interleukin 1 (IL-1) induced LIF mRNA and protein expression. We utilized the murine cell line +/+-1.LDA11 to further define regulatory mechanisms of LIF expression in bone marrow stromal cells. The production of LIF mRNA is stimulated by IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, and the cAMP analogue 8-bromoadenosine 3':5'-monophosphate (8BrcAMP). LIF mRNA expression is controlled at the transcriptional level. Different fragments from -542 to -45 bp 5' upstream of the transcriptional start site of the murine LIF gene were fused to the luciferase gene. All LIF-promoter lucif…

Neutronic and photonic analysis of the water-cooled Pb17Li test blanket module for ITER-FEAT

2002

Abstract Within the European Fusion Technology Program, the Water-Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) DEMO breeding blanket line was selected in 1995 as one of the two EU lines to be developed in the next decade, in particular with the aim of manufacturing a Test Blanket Module (TBM) to be implemented in ITER. This specific goal has been maintained also in ITER-FEAT program even if the general design parameters of the TBMs have reported some changes. This paper is focused on the investigation of the WCLL-TBM nuclear response in ITER-FEAT through detailed 3D-Monte Carlo neutronic and photonic analyses. A 3D heterogeneous model of the most recent design of the WCLL-TBM has been set-up simulating reali…

On the nuclear response of the water-cooled Pb-17Li test blanket module for ITER-FEAT

2003

Abstract Within the European Fusion Technology Programme, the Water-Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) DEMO breeding blanket line was selected in 1995 as one of the two EU lines to be developed in the next decades, in particular with the aim of manufacturing a Test Blanket Module (TBM) to be tested in ITER-FEAT. The present paper is focused on the study of the WCLL-TBM nuclear response in ITER-FEAT, being specifically oriented to the investigation of the local effects due to the typical C-shaped tubes of the breeder zone, since they could play a pivotal role in the module-relevant thermo–mechanical design. A 3D heterogeneous model of the WCLL-TBM, realistically simulating its new lay out and taking…

Thermomechanical analysis supporting the preliminary engineering design of DONES target assembly

2018

Abstract The design of the Demo Oriented NEutron Source (DONES) is the main objective of the Work Package Early Neutron Source (WPENS) of EUROfusion Power Plant Physics and Technology (PPPT) programme. DONES is an IFMIF-based neutron source with the goal of testing and qualifying candidate materials to be used in DEMO and future fusion power plants. In the framework of these activities, a research campaign has been carried out at the University of Palermo, in close cooperation with ENEA labs, in order to assess the thermomechanical performances of the DONES target system, endowed with an integrated Target Assembly (TA) when it undergoes the thermomechanical loads typical of its nominal oper…

Spread of franchising: a multinational comparison based on the notions of innovation diffusion

1998

Investigates the globalization of franchising through a discussion of the literature on innovation diffusion. Proceeds then to evaluate the globalization of format franchising in 31 countries, drawing data from Arthur Andersen’s multi‐national study. Finds that the USA has the greatest number of franchisors and franchisees, Japan seems to have a different franchise structure when compared to the other countries studied, and Israel is a franchising novice. Presents a number of tables, accompanied by notes of caution on analysing the statistics. Mentions briefly some examples of franchises. Refers the findings back to the literature review to assess how well they match the theoretical descrip…

Effect of Intra-Arterial Infusion of Papaverine Hydrochloride on Brain Tissue Oxygen Pressure in the Management of Severe Vasospasm Following Aneurys…

2001

Despite considerable advances in diagnostic, surgical and interventional techniques, the overall outcome for patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage remains poor. Concerning perioperative course, cerebral ischaemia is one of the major factors causing secondary brain demage. The aim of all therapeutic interventions is the stabilization and maintance of cerebral blood flow and tissue oxygenation in order to prevent cerebral ischaemia and consecutively brain infarction [1].

A deep semantic segmentation-based algorithm to segment crops and weeds in agronomic color images

2022

Abstract In precision agriculture, the accurate segmentation of crops and weeds in agronomic images has always been the center of attention. Many methods have been proposed but still the clean and sharp segmentation of crops and weeds is a challenging issue for the images with a high presence of weeds. This work proposes a segmentation method based on the combination of semantic segmentation and K-means algorithms for the segmentation of crops and weeds in color images. Agronomic images of two different databases were used for the segmentation algorithms. Using the thresholding technique, everything except plants was removed from the images. Afterward, semantic segmentation was applied usin…

Mechanistic Understanding of Food Effects: Water Diffusivity in Gastrointestinal Tract Is an Important Parameter for the Prediction of Disintegration…

2013

Much interest has been expressed in this work on the role of water diffusivity in the release media as a new parameter for predicting drug release. NMR was used to measure water diffusivity in different media varying in their osmolality and viscosity. Water self-diffusion coefficients in sucrose, sodium chloride, and polymeric hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) solutions were correlated with water uptake, disintegration, and drug release rates from trospium chloride immediate release tablets. The water diffusivity in sucrose solutions was significantly reduced compared to polymeric HPMC and molecular sodium chloride solutions. Water diffusivity was found to be a function of sucrose concen…

Ascorbic Acid Oxidation in Sucrose Aqueous Model Systems at Subzero Temperatures

2004

The reduction of Tempol by ascorbic acid in concentrated sucrose solutions was measured by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) at temperatures ranging from 16 to −16 °C. This method allowed the determination of the rate constants (k) of this fast reaction, by recording the Tempol reduction as a function of time. The two reactants were initially separated and had to migrate for the reaction to occur. The experimental findings were compared with predicted values according to the equation for diffusion-controlled reaction proposed by Atkins. The experimental reaction rate constants were observed to be lower than the calculated ones. However, the experimental values were found to be controlle…
