Pricing of electricity futures based on locational price differences : empirical evidence from Finland
2016
Tietyn maantieteellisen alueen kilpailullisilla sähkömarkkinoilla on yleensä viitespot-hinta, joka kuvastaa yleistä hintatasoa tukkumarkkinalla, ja jota käytetään johdannaisten viitehintana. Paikallisten markkinoiden hinnat saattavat kuitenkin poiketa tästä viitehinnasta siirtoyhteyksien rajallisuuden takia. Pohjoismaisilla sähkömarkkinoilla ns. systeemi- ja tarjousalueen aluehinnan väliseltä basis-riskiltä suojaudutaan ns. aluehintaero-johdannaisilla (eng. Electricity Price Area Differential, EPAD).
Modelling competences and anticipating the future competence needs in the forest sector
2018
This explorative study examined practices of competence modelling in the forest sector organisations and how organisations anticipate changes in competence needs in the future. Semi-structured in-depth interviews (n=10) were conducted amongst forest sector experts in Finland and data was analysed by thematic analysis. The findings showed that the practices of modelling competences were diverse, most frequently used ones being superior-subordinate review discussions and quantitative competence surveys. In addition to these formal systems, informal modelling, especially on the team level and in smaller companies was also frequent. Organisations used competence modelling for several human reso…
Can corporate social responsibility (CSR) be recruited? : an insight to future employees' values and perceptions on attractive employers
2013
Many businesses acknowledge that they want to achieve the best possible employees in order to succeed in the markets in the near future. This study takes a stance on who these employees, the future talents, are and what do they value, especially from the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) point of view. Thus future employees’ values and their aspirations towards attractive employers are observed in this qualitative, theme-interview based study conducted to Master’s level students of University of Jyväskylä, School of Business and Economics. The results show that there are five (5) different classes of future employees, which are Environmental Idealists, Equality Enhancers, Corporate Mone…
Antenarratives in Ongoing Strategic Change : Using the Story Index to Capture Daunting and Optimistic Futures
2018
Strategic organizational change is a complex, future-oriented phenomenon that is critical for any organization. Traditional means of inquiry have struggled with the difficulty of capturing the future; thus, the methods for managing things to come remain scarce. In this chapter, we contribute to managing strategic change, and thereby the future of the organization, by developing the Story Index (SIX) method. The method facilitates a better understanding of how organizational change takes shape in the discursive reality before materializing in concrete terms. SIX is an analytical process combining antenarratives and narrative rationality to reveal the emerging meanings and rationales of chang…
Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Management
2019
This study focuses on the impact of advancing Artificial Intelligence systems on management during the next decade. Much of the attention around Artificial Intelligence and work revolves around the replacement versus augmentation debate. According to previous literature, rather than simply replacing tasks, machine learning tools can complement human decision making. Based on semi-structured expert interviews, this study provides tentative evidence that this may be true for managers on the highest level of organisations, but perhaps less so for operational and middle managers who may find a larger number of their tasks replaced. As routine tasks of supervision and administration can be autom…
From politics to pleasure and protest : what does the future hold in the political arena, given the alleged growing “youth de-politisation” today?
2013
Young people’s mode of political participation in recent years has been an object of concern and debate among political scientists and youth researchers. Research-based evidence has shown that many of them are not interested in politics like the youth of yesteryears. This trend has been described as “youth de-politisation” or youth political disengagement. Young people are said to now find comfort in pleasure and “protest politics” which often do not lead them to political positions in government or in governance institutions. Some researchers have thus described them as a ‘protest generation’ in contrast to the ‘political generation’ of their parents and grandparents. This could have cruci…
Korona opettajan osaamisen haastajana
2021
Tarkastelemme suomalaisen opettajan osaamista suhteessa korona-ajan tuomiin uusiin opettajuuden haasteisiin. Opettajan työ on monipuolista osaamista edellyttävää asiantuntijatyötä. Opettajan keskeinen osaaminen on koottu seitsemän yliopiston yhteistyönä tutkimusperustaiseen Opettajan osaamisen karttaan.
Strutture analitiche e sintetiche. Modalità e temporalità nel siciliano contemporaneo
2011
From the theoretical assumption that in grammaticalization processes the derivation from synthetic to analytic forms is a way of disambiguation of temporal, modal and aspectual meanings, we examine the use of synthetic and analytic structures for the expression of the rendering of future tense and of deontic and epistemic modality in contemporary Sicilian dialect. With respect to methodology, we operate a comparison between Italian and dialect to grasp the dynamics in effect in the (ri-)definition of verbal categories in the contemporary Italian system, in times of increasing heteronomy between Standard Language and dialectal varieties. The study is based on the answers given to a set of tr…
Genetics of longevity. Data from the studies on Sicilian centenarians
2012
Abstract The demographic and social changes of the past decades have determined improvements in public health and longevity. So, the number of centenarians is increasing as a worldwide phenomenon. Scientists have focused their attention on centenarians as optimal model to address the biological mechanisms of "successful and unsuccessful ageing". They are equipped to reach the extreme limits of human life span and, most importantly, to show relatively good health, being able to perform their routine daily life and to escape fatal age-related diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Thus, particular attention has been centered on their genetic background and immune system. In thi…
