Mathematics and Soft Computing in Music

2011

Mathematics is the fundamental tool for dealing with the physical processes that explain music but it is also in the very essence of this art. Musical notes, the first elements which music works with, are defined for each tuning system as very specific frequencies; however, instrumentalists know that small changes in these values do not have serious consequences. In fact, sometimes consensus is only reached if the entire orchestra alters the theoretical pitches. The explanation for this contradiction is that musicians implicitly handle very complex mathematical processes involving some uncertainty in the concepts and this is better explained in terms of fuzzy logic. Modelling the notes as f…

Compatibility of the Different Tuning Systems in an Orchestra

2009

Focusing on the daily practice of musicians, we give flexibility to the mathematical treatment of musical notes, tuning systems and the relations between them. This allows us to connect the theory and the practice of music. Using the techniques of fuzzy logic, we describe the concepts with fuzzy sets and introduce the α-compatibility as a degree of interchangeability between tuning systems. To show how our proposal works, we use a fragment of Haydn and analyze the compatibility of the notes taken from 48 recordings for the tuning systems of Pythagoras, Zarlino and Equal Temperament of 12 notes.

Mercury$$^\mathrm{\textregistered }$$: A Software Based on Fuzzy Clustering for Computer-Assisted Composition

2019

We present Mercury, a new software for computer-assisted composition based on fuzzy clustering algorithms. This software is able to generate a big number of transitions between any two different melodies, harmonic progressions or rhythmical patterns. Mercury works with symbolic music notation. The software is, therefore, able to read music and to export the generated musical production into MusicXML format. This paper focusses on some theoretical aspects of the CFT algorithm implemented in the software in order to create those complete transitions, overviewing not only the structure of the program but the user’s interface and its music notation module. Finally, the wide variety of compositi…

Fuzzy logic helps to integrate music theory and practice

2010

Among the many practices of composers, instrumentalists and singers which clearly correspond with fuzzy logic our focus here is on tuning. Different criteria have been used to select the sounds that music uses. A set containing these sounds (musical notes) is called a tuning system. Several tuning systems coexist in a classical orchestra. The pitches of the notes are different and very precisely defined for each system; however the consequences of small deviations from these theoretical frequencies are not serious. Actually, the orchestra members are aware of the necessity of reaching a consensus and adjust their instruments to tune well. Because of this, many musicians feel that the mathem…

A fuzzy-set analysis of conditions influencing mutual fund performance

2019

Abstract This paper presents an application of fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to frame the conditions that lead to over- or under-performance of mutual funds. Building upon a considerable library of research on fund returns, the study uses fsQCA to affirm and extend earlier discoveries. Considered here is fund performance relative to Morningstar ratings, features of the funds themselves, as well as characteristics of the fund managers. Results suggest that positive Morningstar and analyst ratings are necessary conditions, on average, for funds to generate value according to the Jensen's alpha ratio. Just over seven percent of the cases imply that funds have attractive Sh…

FUZZY TCP: A PRELIMINARY STUDY

2002

Implementing efficient TCP for the Internet necessarily has to cope with the problem that the source does not know in advance which window allocation policy should be the best to use for a given network condition. In this paper, an on-line adaptive fuzzy system is used at the source in an objective to find the best possible weighted combination among the available policies.

A new type of hydraulic cylinder system controlled by the new-type hydraulic transformer

2013

In order to enhance the efficiency of the hydraulic system, one new-type hydraulic transformer is presented in this paper. First, the basic structure and the principle of the new-type hydraulic transformer are explained. Then, the mathematical models including both the inner and outer loops are analyzed. Moreover, two kinds of control methods are discussed corresponding to the two loops, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed strategies are translated into the simulation languages, and the simulation is made in Simulink. Finally, the prototypes of new-type hydraulic transformer and the test rig are constructed to test the performance. Both the simulated and experimental results show that …

Fuzzy Control Strategy for Cooperative Non-holonomic Motion of Cybercars with Passengers Vibration Analysis

2021

The cybercars are electric road wheeled non-holonomic vehicles with fully automated driving capabilities. They contribute to sustainable mobility and are employed as passenger vehicles. Non-holonomic mechanics describes the motion of the cybercar constrained by non-integrable constraints, i.e. constraints on the system velocities that do not arise from constraints on the configuration alone. First of all there are thus with dynamic nonholonomic constraints, i.e. constraints preserved by the basic Euler-Lagrange equations (Bloch, 2000; Melluso, 2007; Raimondi & Melluso, 2006-a). Of course, these constraints are not externally imposed on the system but rather are consequences of the equations…

Fuzzy EKF Control for Wheeled Nonholonomic Vehicles

2006

In this paper a new Fuzzy extended Kalman robust control system for position and orientation tracking of nonholonomic vehicles with two wheels actuated by two independent DC motors is presented. The problem of robustness and localization are solved simultaneously. About the robustness, some perturbations coming from the outside environment and depending on the contact between the wheels and the ground, involve violations of the nonholonomic constraints. The fuzzy controller of this work is able to obtain a dynamic term of robustness with respect to the perturbations above. However, by using encoders only, the measures of actual position and orientation of the vehicle are with Gaussian noise…

Fuzzy cooperative control of automated ground passenger vehicles

2007

In this paper a fuzzy motion control for cooperative passenger automated vehicles where there are not collisions between the closest ones is proposed. Based on the position of the target and on the initial position of each cooperative vehicle, a supervisory plans nonholonomic circular trajectories which are without intersections, while a fuzzy control strategy assures the asymptotical stability of the motion errors and the reaching of the target with low acceleration values along the planned trajectories. Based on the ISO 2631-1 standard, the saturation properties of the fuzzy maps guarantees low values of the longitudinal and lateral accelerations to assure the comfort of the passengers. T…
