Observation of the Continuous Stern-Gerlach Effect on an Electron Bound in an Atomic Ion

We report on the first observation of the continuous Stern-Gerlach effect on an electron bound in an atomic ion. The measurement was performed on a single hydrogenlike ion ( 12C5+) in a Penning trap. The measured g factor of the bound electron, g = 2.001 042(2), is in excellent agreement with the theoretical value, confirming the relativistic correction at a level of 0.1%. This proves the possibility of g-factor determinations on atomic ions to high precision by using the continuous Stern-Gerlach effect. The result demonstrates the feasibility of conducting experiments on single heavy highly charged ions to test quantum electrodynamics in the strong electric field of the nucleus.
Free-energy barriers for crystal nucleation from fluid phases.

Monte Carlo simulations of crystal nuclei coexisting with the fluid phase in thermal equilibrium in finite volumes are presented and analyzed, for fluid densities from dense melts to the vapor. Generalizing the lever-rule for two-phase coexistence in the canonical ensemble to finite volume, "measurements" of the nucleus volume together with the pressure and chemical potential of the surrounding fluid allows to extract the surface free energy of the nucleus. Neither the knowledge of the (in general non-spherical) nucleus shape nor of the angle-dependent interface tension is required for this task. The aim of this study was to calculate the theoretical variation of the nonlinear damping factor (B) as a function of the muscle shortening velocity, and then to compare the theoretical values with the experimental data obtained on both the elbow flexor and the ankle extensor muscles. The theoretical variation of the B factor was determined from a muscle model consisting of a contractile component in parallel with a viscous damper both in series with an elastic component, and by using, the characteristic equation of the force velocity curve. X-rays from accretion shocks in T Tauri stars: The case of BP Tau

We present an XMM-Newton observation of the classical T Tauri star BP Tau. In the XMM-Newton RGS spectrum the O {\sc vii} triplet is clearly detected with a very weak forbidden line indicating high plasma densities and/or a high UV flux environment. At the same time concurrent UV data point to a small hot spot filling factor suggesting an accretion funnel shock as the site of the X-ray and UV emission. Together with the X-ray data on TW Hya these new observations suggest such funnels to be a general feature in classical T Tauri stars.
g-factor measurement of hydrogenlike28Si13+as a challenge to QED calculations

Using a phase-detection method to determine the cyclotron frequency of a single trapped ion in a Penning trap allowed us to perform a measurement of the $g$ factor of the bound electron in hydrogenlike ${}^{28}$Si${}^{13+}$ with a statistical uncertainty of $4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}11}$. Furthermore, we reevaluated the image-charge shift as the main source of uncertainty. Our result challenges bound-state quantum-electrodynamical calculations by probing two-loop contributions of order (Z$\ensuremath{\alpha}$)${}^{6}$ and paves the way towards a more precise determination of fundamental constants as the electron mass.
Measurement of the electronicgfactor ofH2+

Ion trapping and spin-dependent charge-exchange techniques were used to determine the electron g factor of ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}^{+}$ as a first step to provide a precise test of the theory of molecular g factors. Accessible to us were the vibrational states 4, 5, and 6. Averaged over these vibrational states we obtain g(v=4,5,6) =2.002 2837(18) 7(18) in agreement with the corresponding theoretical value of g=2.002 282 8(8). As a by-product we have measured the rotational g factor to be ${g}_{\mathrm{rot}=0.920(40)}$, compared with the calculated value of ${g}_{\mathrm{rot}=0.9244}$.
Molecular correlation functions for uniaxial ellipsoids in the isotropic state

We perform event-driven molecular dynamics simulations of a system composed by uniaxial hard ellipsoids for different values of the aspect-ratio and packing fraction . We compare the molecular orientational-dependent structure factors previously calculated within the Percus-Yevick approximation with the numerical results. The agreement between theoretical and numerical results is rather satisfactory. We also show that, for specific orientational quantities, the molecular structure factors are sensitive to the particle shape and can be used to distinguish prolate from oblate ellipsoids. Event-Driven Simulation of the Dynamics of Hard Ellipsoids

We introduce a novel algorithm to perform event-driven simulations of hard rigid bodies of arbitrary shape, that relies on the evaluation of the geometric distance. In the case of a monodisperse system of uniaxial hard ellipsoids,we perform molecular dynamics simulations varying the aspect-ratio X0 and the packing fraction phi. We evaluate the translational Dtrans and the rotational Drot diffusion coefficient and the associated isodiffusivity lines in the phi-X0 plane. We observe a decoupling of the translational and rotational dynamics which generates an almost perpendicular crossing of the Dtrans and Drot isodiffusivity lines. DEMOGRAPHIC DETERMINANTS OF THE POWER OF THE STATEConnections between demographic conditions of the state and its power have become a reason for the author’s attempt to identify key power-building factors featuring demographic nature. For this purpose, a statistical analysis based on data from selected European countries such as Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Germany and Romania was carried out. The outcome of the research allowed the author to obtain six groups of explanatory variables for the model of assessing the power of the state in the demographic area.
