Combining GPU and FPGA technology for efficient exhaustive interaction analysis in GWAS

2016

Interaction between genes has become a major topic in quantitative genetics. It is believed that these interactions play a significant role in genetic variations causing complex diseases. Due to the number of tests required for an exhaustive search in genome-wide association studies (GWAS), a large amount of computational power is required. In this paper, we present a hybrid architecture consisting of tightly interconnected CPUs, GPUs and FPGAs and a fine-tuned software suite to outperform other implementations in pairwise interaction analysis while consuming less than 300Watts and fitting into a standard desktop computer case.

Rifampicin treatment of Blattella germanica evidences a fecal transmission route of their gut microbiota

Eukaryotes have established symbiotic relationship with microorganisms, which enables them to accomplish functions that they cannot perform alone. In the German cockroach, Blattella germanica, the obligate endosymbiont Blattabacterium coexists with a rich gut microbiota. The transmission of Blattabacterium is vertical, but little is known about how the gut microbiota colonizes newborn individuals. The conversion of proteins into amyloid fibrils and other amyloid-like aggregates is closely connected to the onset of a series of age-related pathologies. Upon changes in environmental conditions, amyloid-like aggregates may also undergo disassembly into oligomeric aggregates, the latter being recognized as key effectors in toxicity. This indicates new possible routes for in vivo accumulation of toxic species. Simultaneous infection of cattle with different Anaplasma phagocytophilum variants.

Anaplasma phagocytophilum is a tick-transmitted Gram-negative obligate intracellular bacterium that replicates in neutrophil granulocytes. It causes tick-borne fever in cattle and sheep. We report here the case of a 5-year-old cow from Germany with clinically overt granulocytic anaplasmosis presenting with fever, lower limb oedema and drop in milk-yield. The herd encompassed 10 animals, 8 other animals showed subclinical infection. Duration of previous treatment as a prognostic factor in metastatic colorectal cancer treated with trifluridine/tipiracil

We herein describe the findings from the trifluridine/tipiracil (TAS-102) Compassionate Use program in Latvia, set up prior to marketing authorization for the management of pretreated patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). The efficacy and safety of TAS-102 in patients with refractory mCRC were evaluated in the phase III trial RECOURSE. A previous report confirmed neutropenia and duration of previous treatment for mCRC as prognostic factors in TAS-102 users.
