Central obesity and hypertension. Relationship between fasting serum insulin, plasma renin activity, and diastolic blood pressure in young obese subj…

1994

This study was designed to evaluate the role of fasting serum insulin and plasma renin activity in obesity-induced hypertension. In view of this, plasma catecholamines, fasting serum insulin (IRI), urinary sodium excretion (NaU), plasma renin activity (PRA), and plasma aldosterone (PA) levels were assessed in young (age less than 40 years) normotensive (n = 27) and hypertensive (n = 14) subjects with central obesity and in lean normotensives (n = 20). Central obesity was evaluated by waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) according to the indication of the Italian Consensus Conference of Obesity. PRA, PA, IRI, and plasma norepinephrine levels were significantly (P < .05) higher in both obese groups than …

Increased expression of p16 in both oral and genital lichen planus.

2018

Background Lichen Planus, LP, is an inflammatory disease of possible autoimmune origin affecting mainly oral and genital mucosa and skin. According to the WHO oral LP is considered a potentially malignant disorders. The p16 tumour suppressor protein can act as an inhibitor of cyclin dependent kinases 4 and 6 and thus down regulate cell cycle progression. Since the discovery of p16 several studies have evaluated its expression in various forms of human cancers. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the expression of p16 in oral and genital LP and corresponding healthy mucosa. Material and Methods A total of 76 cases of oral LP (OLP), 34 cases of genital LP (GLP), 12 cases of heal…

Effects of Pentoxifylline on Soluble Klotho Concentrations and Renal Tubular Cell Expression in Diabetic Kidney Disease

2018

OBJECTIVE The effect of pentoxifylline on Klotho levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with chronic kidney disease (CKD) was assessed in a post hoc analysis of the Pentoxifylline for Renoprotection in Diabetic Nephropathy (PREDIAN) trial. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Circulating and urinary tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and Klotho were measured before and after 1 year of pentoxifylline. The effect on Klotho expression was assessed in cultured renal tubular cells. RESULTS Pentoxifylline administration resulted in decreased serum and urinary TNF-α, whereas serum and urinary Klotho increased significantly. Changes in urinary Klotho, urinary TNF-α, and phosphorus were associated wi…

Left ventricular hypertrophy in chronic kidney disease: A diagnostic criteria comparison.

2020

Background and aims: CKD patients have a high prevalence of LVH and this leads to an increase of cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and left ventricular geometry in a group of 293 hypertensive patients with stage 2–5 chronic kidney disease (CKD), compared with 289 essential hypertensive patients with normal renal function. Methods and results: All patients underwent echocardiographic examination. Patients on stage 1 CKD, dialysis treatment, or with cardiovascular diseases were excluded. LVH was observed in 62.8% of patients with CKD and in 51.9% of essential hypertensive patients (P < 0.0001). We found increasingl…

Association between M467T and 114 C--A variants within the SLC3A1 gene and some phenotypical traits in cystinuria patients from Spain.

2000

Cystinuria is an inherited metabolic disease characterized by an abnormal urinary excretion of cystine and dibasic amino acids. Formation of renal calculi, recurrent infections and renal failure are the main complications of this disease. The SLC3A1 gene, which codes for a dibasic amino acid transporter protein, is involved in the pathogenesis of cystinuria. We investigated the possible association between molecular variants (M467T, E483X, T216 M and 114 C--A) within the SLC3A1 gene and some phenotypical traits in a Spanish area. The study population consisted of 45 cystinuria patients, 42 cystinuria relatives and 81 healthy control subjects. Only the M467T mutation was found in chromosomes…

Sympathetic Activity and Blood Pressure Pattern in Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease Hypertensives

1998

To study the potential role of sympathetic activity in the pathogenesis of arterial hypertension associated with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and to analyze its relationship with 24-hour blood pressure pattern, plasma catecholamines and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring were evaluated in 30 ADPKD hypertensive patients (of which 17 without and 13 with renal failure) and in 50 essential hypertensives. The groups were matched for sex, body mass index, known duration of hypertension, and clinic blood pressure. Plasma catecholamines, determined in resting position, were higher in ADPKD patients without renal failure than in essential hypertensives. Nighttime di…

Heparin-induced priapism

2001

Heparin-induced priapism constitutes a special form of pharmaco-induced prolonged erection, but the pathophysiological principles are not yet definitely clear. Heparin-induced antiplatelet-antibodies may lead to the aggregation of thrombocytes and thus alter the penile blood flow leading to low-flow priapism. Alternatively, this condition may be explained by initial high-flow priapism that later turns into ischemic priapism. The question remains whether hemorrhage with subsequent organisation of the hematoma and late fibrosis constitutes a pathogenetic factor. Besides this pathogenetic discussion, this paper presents the differential diagnosis of priapism as well as diagnostic and therapeut…

Bolus-enhanced renal spiral CT: technique, diagnostic value and drawbacks

1994

Abstract In addition to pre- and postcontrast renal CT scans, early bolus-enhanced spiral scans during demarcation of the corticomedullary junction were acquired in 85 patients. The diagnostic value and drawbacks of the three imaging series in the evaluation of renal disease were assessed. Renal calcifications and calculus disease detected at precontrast scans (18%) were obscured after contrast administration and excretion in most cases. In the detection of renal lesions bolus-enhanced spiral CT and delayed postcontrast scans had an identical diagnostic yield (94%). Bolus-enhanced spiral CT was superior in the assessment of lesion vascularity and vascular anatomy as well as opacification of…

Cutaneous, genital and oral lichen planus: a descriptive study of 274 patients

2018

Background Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the oral mucosa as well as the skin, genital mucosa and other sites. Objective: to evaluate the correlation between oral, genital and cutaneous lichen planus, in a sample of LP patients. Material and Methods This descriptive study reviewed 274 clinical histories of patients, who all presented histological confirmation of lichen planus verified by a pathologist, attending research centers in Barcelona. Results A total of 40 LP patients (14.59%) presented genital lesions. Of 131 patients with cutaneous LP (47.8%), the most commonly affected zones were the body’s flexor surfaces, representing 60.1% of cases. 24% of pati…

Ice water test in multiple sclerosis: A pilot trial.

2018

OBJECTIVES To investigate the significance of the ice water test in patients with multiple sclerosis and to evaluate a novel ice water test nomogram in a large patient cohort. METHODS A total of 201 ice water tests of patients with multiple sclerosis were retrospectively evaluated. Incontinence episodes in 24 h and sex were correlated with the ice water test. Furthermore, an ice water test nomogram was developed in order to categorize the detrusor overactivity in severity degrees. Descriptive statistics were carried out for population characteristics. Correlations of categorical variables were calculated by the χ2 -test. The independent t-test was carried out for correlations of continuous …
