Research on Emotion Recognition and Dementias: Foundations and Prospects
2021
Background: The study of emotion recognition could be crucial for detecting alterations in certain cognitive areas or as an early sign of neurological disorders. Objective: The main objective of the study is to characterize research development on emotion recognition, identifying the intellectual structure that supports this area of knowledge, and the main lines of research attracting investigators’ interest. Methods: We identified publications on emotion recognition and dementia included in the Web of Science Core Collection, analyzing the scientific output and main disciplines involved in generating knowledge in the area. A co-citation analysis and an analysis of the bibliographic couplin…
Uneven economic burden of non-communicable diseases among Indian households: A comparative analysis
2021
Background Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading global cause of death and disproportionately concentrate among those living in low-income and middle-income countries. However, its economic impact on households remains less well known in the Indian context. This study aims to assess the economic impact of NCDs in terms of out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE) and its catastrophic impact on NCDs affected households in India. Materials and methods Data were collected from the 75th round of the National Sample Survey Office, Government of India, conducted in the year 2017–18. This is the latest round of data available on health, which constitutes a sample of 113,823 households. The coll…
Fluência verbal fonêmica e semntica: dados normativos de idosos Brasileiros
2015
This study aims to investigate the influence of sociodemographic characteristics on the performance of older people on two tasks of verbal fluency and provide normative data for a Brazilian population of healthy elderly individuals with different educational levels. The initial sample included 521 individuals aged from 60 years, participating in the Program Family Health Strategy. Participants who had scores suggestive of cognitive decline on the Mini-Mental State Examination, depressive symptoms in Geriatric Depression Scale and self-reported neurological or psychiatric disorders were excluded. The final sample consisted of 218 participants in phonemic verbal fluency task (letters F, A and…

Migraine, Cognitive Decline, and Dementia in Older Adults: A Population-Based Study
2022
Background: The potential impact of migraine on cognitive aging among older adults remains controversial. Objective: To examine the relationship of migraine and subtypes with cognitive decline and dementia in an older Swedish population. Methods: This population-based study included 3,069 participants (age ≥ 60 years) from the Swedish National study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen, Stockholm. Baseline examination was conducted in 2001–2004, and participants were followed every 3 or 6 years until 2013–2016. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews, clinical examinations, laboratory tests, and linkage with registers. Global cognitive function was measured with the Mini-Mental Stat…
Cholesterol and Amyloid-β: Evidence for a Cross-Talk between Astrocytes and Neuronal Cells.
2011
Accumulating data supports the concept that alterations of cholesterol metabolism might influence the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides in the brain. Changes in the neuronal production of Aβ have been described as a function of cholesterol levels, thus suggesting a causal link between cholesterol homeostasis dysregulation and AD pathogenesis. Under physiological conditions, cholesterol uptake in the brain is efficiently prevented by the blood-brain barrier, and mature neurons are thought to rely on glial cells for their cholesterol supply. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis t…
P3‐039: Axonal neuritic pathology induces early presynaptic alterations in ps1/APP Alzheimer's mice hippocampus
2011
Loss of neurons in the hippocampus correlates with memory impairment in AD. Significant early reduction in the numerical density of hippocampal SOM interneurons was found in single (APPswe) and double (APPswe/ PS1dE9 and APPswe/TauP301S-G272V) transgenic models based on APP over expression and amyloid production. However, this inhibitory population was unaffected in age-matched single PS1 and tau transgenic mice as well as nontransgenic controls. Whereas SOM neuron loss in APPswe/PS1dE9 was associated to the onset of extracellular amyloid pathology in double APP/ tau mice this loss preceded plaque formation. Conclusions: As in human AD, somatostatin cell loss is a common early pathological …
DETERMINANTS OF DNA METHYLATION BASED AGE ACCELERATION IN YOUNG AND OLDER TWIN PAIRS
2017
DNA methylation (DNAm) age, a novel marker of biological aging, has been shown to predict mortality and to be associated with physiological aging. However, the relative contribution of genetic and environmental factors to DNAm age over life span is not fully known. We estimated the magnitude of genetic and environmental factors in DNAm based age acceleration.
Analysis of HLA-DQA, HLA-DQB frequencies in a group of Sardinian centenarians
2006
Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles, regulating type and intensity of the immune response, might influence life expectancy. In previous case-control studies the authors have demonstrated that both HLA-DR and -DQ alleles are not associated with longevity in the Sardinian population. On the other hand, association studies are subjected (as part of the homogeneity of the population in terms of geographic origin) to a number of possible confounding factors. Therefore, the authors typed the HLA-DQA1 and HLA-DQB1 alleles in 24 sibs (age range 85 to 97) of 17 centenarians by PCR-SSP. Sib pair analysis showed non-significant differences between the observed and expected percentage of DQA* or DQB1…
