A Kinect-Based Gesture Acquisition and Reproduction System for Humanoid Robots
2020
The paper illustrates a system that endows an humanoid robot with the capability to mimic the motion of a human user in real time, serving as a basis for further gesture based human-robot interactions. The described approach uses the Microsoft Kinect as a low cost alternative to expensive motion capture devices.
Mapping the sound world of the flute: towards a new classification of standard and extended techniques
2016
In the last decades, some literature has been published about extended techniques, and composers have made them part of the contemporary music language. However, the classification of extended techniques in these writings is often arbitrary, based on the way they have been discovered and used. In this contribution, a new way of classifying flute playing techniques is proposed, with the aim of grouping them according to their role in sound production and to the gestural parameters that are involved for each of them. First, a definition of the concept of extended technique is given. An overview of publications since the 1960s will show the existing classifications; then types of musical gestu…
Wii-bändi : designing an expressive digital musical interface for therapeutic use with disabled people in a group setting
2011
This thesis presents the developmental prototype of a gesturally controlled digital musical interface. It is called Wii-bändi, as it uses Nintendo Wii controllers to translate the gestures into music, and is constructed specifically for clients with a variety of physical and mental disabilities so that they can use it in a therapeutic group context. It is argued that gestural and emotional expressivity might be based on a theory of vitality affects, and that optimal learnability could be achieved through making use of learning schemas. It then sets out how the interface was created using a methodological approach based on action research, describing the specific contexts that led to the cha…
Effect of tempo and vision on interpersonal coordination of timing in dyadic performance
2015
Interpersonal coordination within a dyadic musical performance requires that the two musicians share a similar mental model of the music’s timing structure. In addition to non-fluctuating inter-onset-interval, matched mental models can be observed through corporeal articulations and apparent embodiment of musical features (i.e. synchronous body sway, mimicked or complementary gestures). Our aim was to examine the effect of tempo on interpersonal coordination within a musical dyad. Violin dyads performed three unfamiliar collaborative musical sequences in facing vs. non-facing conditions. Our hypotheses were that interpersonal coordination would be weakened in the non-facing conditions, and …
Exploring the perception of expressivity and interaction within musical dyads
2016
Bodily gestures in music performance play an important role in the perception and appreciation of music by the audience. Performance variations can be identified by observers even when no auditory cues are available; visual kinematic information has been demonstrated to be crucial in identifying expressive intentions. The current thesis explores violin dyads performing an unfamiliar song. High quality optical motion capture was employed to record full body movement. We applied the standard paradigm to study the perception of expressive performance. Our aim was to predict perceptual ratings of expressivity from movement computations. That is, to deduce secondary aspects of musical gestures, …
Digital Devices Use and Language Skills in Children between 8 and 36 Month
2020
Background: Over the past decade, the use of digital tools has grown and research evidence suggests that traditional media and new media offer both benefits and health risks for young children. The abilities to understand and use language represent two of the most important competencies developed during the first 3 years of life through the interaction of the child with people, objects, events, and other environmental factors. The main goal of our study is to evaluate the relationship between digital devices use and language abilities in children between 8 and 36 month, also considering the influence of several factors. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional observational stu…
