Megacities without Global Functions.

2007

Present urban evolution is characterized by two major phenomena. On the one hand, the number of very large cities, the megacities, increases dramatically, especially in the less developed countries (LDCs). On the other hand, globalization leads to the emergence of cities coordinating complex and global economic activities, the global cities, especially in the more developed countries (MDCs). So, the two phenomena are diverging. A number of megacities do not exhibit any global function. The global performances of megacities are well correlated with their degree of economic development. But it is worth wondering why economic underdevelopment is consistent with urban growth but not with city gl…

Facing globalization and increased trade: Catalonia's evolution from industrial region to knowledge and creative economy

2011

Catalonia is experiencing a crucial transformation of its productive model. The main changes are exemplified by an intense process of substitution of the traditional aspects (low-technology manufacturing base and orientation towards internal markets) for a model of development characterized by the combined importance of creative industries and high-tech manufacturing activities, and oriented to external markets. The new competitive bases of the regional economy rely on three factors: urbanization and network economies, changes in the productive structure and the generation of innovations linked with export capacity.

The causal link between culture and development is extremely complex and is expressed by following patterns that can not be traced inside of unitary or homogeneous analytical schemes. In this debate, there is a broad acknowledgement that «culture matters». First of all, and even more than in the past, as a source of externalities with …

Sobre la interiorización del espacio social

2009

The author explores the relationships between the exterior world and the inner world in the diverse types of messages and reproducing products of the mass media, analyzing the cultural roots, the ideological, political, and social features that these relationships show. The different reproducing cultural forms create passages and virtual spaces which mediates the space to link it with the inner life. Above all, the author finds that the meditating and informative processing of the public space has a direct link with the modern capitalism in its expansive and privatizing tendency, and it is essential to study today into depth the processes which connect the expansion pf cultural and informat…

Indigenous language education in Russia: current issues and challenges

2021

Despite the high number of recognised Indigenous groups who are struggling to maintain their languages, cultures, and identities in Russia, there is little research done on the matters of cultural and linguistic revitalisation. This study sought to address this gap by exploring the views of two Indigenous groups, Karelian and Mari, on the development of their Indigenous languages and educational strategies to protect and revive their languages. The study relied on in-depth one-on-one interviews with 20 participants, ten from each Indigenous group. The findings show that despite older generations’ relative proficiency and interest in their respective Indigenous languages, motivation to maste…

Sport and civil society in the Nordic region

2017

This paper examines the key elements within the relationships of sport and civil society in Scandinavia. The analysis combines themes and developments in Nordic sport and civil society, such as the role of the welfare state and the impacts of neoliberalism, with consideration of specific national experiences, especially in Finland. The discussion has four main parts. First, we set out the principal features of the ‘Nordic model’ of society, and how it shapes sport and civil society relations. Second, we advance a Finnish case study, examining the historical connections of three sectors to the national sport culture. Third, we consider how, in recent decades, the Nordic model has encountered…

A popular game in Father Christmas Land? Football in Finland

2012

This essay is about the changing role of football in Finland. Our starting point is the view that Finland is not an internationally significant football country. Even so, Finland has been part of the international football organization for over a 100 years. Dividing the development of Finnish football into four historical periods, the essay analyses the relationships of Finnish football with the international football scene, and discusses the significance of Finnish football as part of Finland’s national sports culture. Measured by the number of players, football is the most popular sport in Finland today. With its player streams and fan cultures, Finnish football has also become an integra…

Welcome to the end of the world! Resignifying periphery under the new economy: a nexus analytical view of a tourist website

2013

Accompanying the rise of the globalized new economy, the heritage tourism industry is expanding ever further into the global peripheries. One such ‘peripheral’ site is Samiland, home of the indigenous language minority Sami people, in the north of Lapland. Here, tourism is emerging as an opportunity for the Sami to challenge their longstanding marginalization by mobilizing the periphery and signifying their peripheralized identities in new ways. These processes may look encouraging but they call for critical interrogation. To gain a deeper insight into these processes, the present study draws on a nexus analytical approach combining discourse analysis and ethnography to examine an illuminat…

Sami in the Media: Questions of Language Vitality and Cultural Hybridisation

2008

Abstract In this paper, I will discuss language vitality and cultural hybridisation as taking place in the indigenous, transnational and partly diasporic Sami community and their media. Drawing on ethnographic and interview data on Sami journalists, children and a rap musician, I focus on two central aspects emerging from the data: the implications involved with Sami-only language policy adopted in Sami media and the impact of globalisation, particularly in terms of transnationalism, on Sami media. As Sami media function in a complex multilingual terrain of language endangerment and revitalisation, and multilingual audience and community, the issues of relative value of languages and identi…
