Nonlocal interface mechanical models

The paper presents a nonlocal elastic damage-frictional interface model. The reason to introduce nonlocal mechanical features inside the constitutive relations is justified by the fact that there are several circumstances, in which the interface displays inside an extended process zone with microstructural spatial interactions. Typically, spatial bridging mechanical effects can be effectively modeled by integral (strongly nonlocal) stress-strain relations. The paper develops an elastic nonlocal model with local isotropic damage and the relations are constructed following a thermodynamical consistent approach.
Iterative Regularization Techniques in Image Reconstruction

In this survey we review recent developments concerning the efficient iterative regularization of image reconstruction problems in atmospheric imaging. We present a number of preconditioners for the minimization of the corresponding Tikhonov functional, and discuss the alternative of terminating the iteration early, rather than adding a stabilizing term in the Tikhonov functional. The methods are examplified for a (synthetic) model problem.
Regularity properties for quasiminimizers of a $(p,q)$-Dirichlet integral

Using a variational approach we study interior regularity for quasiminimizers of a $(p,q)$-Dirichlet integral, as well as regularity results up to the boundary, in the setting of a metric space equipped with a doubling measure and supporting a Poincar\'{e} inequality. For the interior regularity, we use De Giorgi type conditions to show that quasiminimizers are locally H\"{o}lder continuous and they satisfy Harnack inequality, the strong maximum principle, and Liouville's Theorem. Furthermore, we give a pointwise estimate near a boundary point, as well as a sufficient condition for H\"older continuity and a Wiener type regularity condition for continuity up to the boundary. Adjoint-based inversion for porosity in shallow reservoirs using pseudo-transient solvers for non-linear hydro-mechanical processes

Abstract Porous flow is of major importance in the shallow subsurface, since it directly impacts on reservoir-scale processes such as waste fluid sequestration or oil and gas exploration. Coupled and non-linear hydro-mechanical processes describe the motion of a low-viscous fluid interacting with a higher viscous porous rock matrix. This two-phase flow may trigger the initiation of solitary waves of porosity, further developing into vertical high-porosity pipes or chimneys. AbstractThe convergence of many iterative procedures, in particular that of the conjugate gradient method, strongly depends on the condition number of the linear system to be solved. In cases with a large condition number, therefore, preconditioning is often used to transform the system into an equivalent one, with a smaller condition number and therefore faster convergence. Spatial distribution of two maternal messengers encoding two sea urchin cell surface proteins

We have localized, byin situ hybridization, two messengers, called bepl and bep4 (butanol extracted proteins), coding for cell surface proteins, involved in cell interaction, in sections of eggs of the sea urchinP. lividus. These maternal RNAs are spatially distributed in a gradient with a maximum at one pole of the egg. These results represent the first demonstration of the existence of a gradient of informational molecules in the sea urchin egg,i.e., the biological material for which the gradient theory was first proposed.
Dynamic electric field assisted multi-dimensional liquid chromatography of biological samples

Complex biological samples require very high resolution separation strategies. The platform introduced here capitalises on the hyphenation of liquid chromatographic (LC) and electric potential gradient electrochromatographic multi-dimensional separation genres. First-dimension selectivity is provided by simultaneous size exclusion (SEC) and strong cation exchange (SCX) chromatography modes, while the second dimension comprises reversed phase (RP) characteristics in a dynamic (time-variant) electric field. Cathodic abatement of Cr(VI) in water by microbial reverse-electrodialysis cells

Abstract For the first time a microbial reverse electrodialysis cell (MRC) was used for the treatment of water contaminated by Cr(VI). It has been recently shown that both inorganic and organic pollutants can be removed by reverse electrodialysis processes (RED) using water with different salinity without the supply of electric energy. However, a high number of membrane pairs is usually necessary for the treatment of wastewater by RED. Here, it was showed that a lower number of membranes can be used by the utilization of a MRC (i.e., a RED cell with a biotic anode) for such purposes. Abstract A field experiment was carried out to evaluate the use of red mud, a by-product of the alumina industry, as a soil amendment on highly contaminated soils in the vicinity of a former Pb–Zn smelter in Copșa Mica (Romania). Changes in the distribution of Zn, Cd and Pb in various soil fractions, mobility of heavy metals in the soil, and their uptake and effects on growth and productivity of Miscanthus sinensis × giganteus were evaluated. Mercury levels in sediments of central Mediterranean Sea: a 150+ year record from box-cores recovered in the Strait of Sicily.

To evaluate the degree of anthropogenic mercury pollution, Hg contents have been measured for box-core sediments sampled along three nearshore-offshore transects in the Strait of Sicily and well constrained for their mineralogy, bulk geochemistry and TOC%. Hg values are generally low (from 15 to 70 microg kg(-1)); however, depth profiles clearly display upcore rising concentrations (up to 202 microg kg(-1) near the SE Sicily coast) that are attributed to anthropogenic load.
