Amaranthus grain as a new ingredient in diets for dairy cows: productive, qualitative, and in vitro fermentation traits
2022
Background: In recent decades, grain amaranths have attracted attention due to their valuable combination of nutritional traits, with higher protein and oil content than conventional cereals. Before they can be proposed as an unconventional ingredient in animal feed, many aspects still need to be investigated from field production to nutritive value. The present research aimed to study the agronomic traits, proximate composition, and digestibility/degradability, fatty acid profile, antioxidant activity, and total phenolic content of two grain amaranth species, Amaranthus cruentus and Amaranthus hypochondriacus (for a total of six accessions), grown in a Mediterranean environment. Results: B…
Determination of trichothecenes and zearalenones in grain cereal, flour and bread by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry
2012
Although analytical methods have been already reported for legislated mycotoxins as trichothecenes and zearalenone (ZON) separately, we describe the optimization of a simple and rapid multimycotoxin method for the determination of a total of 12 mycotoxins simultaneously, nine trichothecenes (NIV, DON, FUS-X, DAS, 15-AcDON, 3-AcDON, NEO, HT-2, T-2 T2), and zearalenone and its metabolites (ZON, a-ZOL, b-ZOL), of different origin (wheat, oat, barley and spelt) and in three different products where these substance can be present (grain, flour and bread) reach the food chain and cause toxic effect either in humans or animals. The extraction procedure was based on a mixture of acetonitrile/water …
Investigation of TiO2 Ceramic Surface Conductivity Using Conductive Atomic Force Microscopy
2012
Dense TiO2 (rutile) ceramic samples were prepared by sintering compacts of titanium dioxide anatase powder at 1500 °C for 5h. Sintered samples were polished and annealed in vacuum at 1000 °C for 1h. Structural properties of the samples were studied by X-ray diffraction, polarized light and scanning electron microscopy. The surface topography and local electrical conductivity of the samples were investigated by atomic force microscopy technique under atmospheric conditions. Enhanced electrical conductivity was observed at grain boundaries while the polished, vacuum annealed grains surface showed non-homogeneous conductivity.
Hydrothermal synthesis of nanostructured inorganic powders by a continuous process under supercritical conditions
2005
Abstract In this study, using a prototype of hydrothermal synthesis in subcritical and supercritical water working in a continuous way, nanometric ceramic precursors with perfectly defined composition are produced: spinel ferrites such as Fe2CoO4, TiO2 with anatase structure and also perovskite structures such as BaZrO3. The as-prepared powders are fully characterized by complementary experiments: X-ray diffraction, electron microscopies, EDX spectrometry, surface area measurement, etc. Thus, particles size, morphology, aggregation state, crystal structure, composition are investigated. Moreover, magnetic properties of the ferrites products are studied. The powders obtained are pure phases …
TiO2 nanostructures prepared by ferrocene/cobalt catalyst agents
2008
We present the growth and characterization of TiO2 nanocrystals. Nanostructured growth is obtained in a low-pressure CVD system by using an organometallic precursor Ti(OC3H7)4 as both the Ti and O source catalyzed by both ferrocene (an organometallic precursor) and cobalt metallic clusters prepared by the microwave-assisted polyol method. Two kinds of TiO2 structures were obtained in the cobalt clusters: a) pine-tree like (with short-leaf structure) and b) long-leaf structures as large as a few micrometers in size and both under 10 nm in thickness. Long-leaf TiO2 structures were grown at cobalt grain boundaries. For the growth conditions utilized, the TiO2 structures are composed of both an…
A recipe for the use of rutile in sedimentary provenance analysis
2012
Abstract Rutile has received considerable attention in the last decade as a valuable petrogenetic indicator mineral. Based on both new and previously published data, we carve out advantages and pitfalls regarding TiO 2 -minerals in sedimentary provenance analysis. This results in a recipe for the use of rutile in provenance studies. The main points are: Rutile geochemistry from different grain size fractions does not differ systematically, and hence rutiles should be extracted from the fraction containing the most rutile grains (usually 63–200 μm). Similarly, different magnetic susceptibility of rutile does not systematically imply different trace element composition. Before interpretation …

Brain excitability in migraine: Hyperexcitability or inhibited inhibition?
2007
While migraine has been considered for a long time a disease of the head vascular structures, it has been more and more evident that the involvement of the cerebral cortex has a primary role in the cascade of events which trigger the migraine attacks. Neurophysiological studies gave an important contribution to our knowledge of the mechanisms underlying the migraine disease
Gluten-free flours from cereals, pseudocereals and legumes: Phenolic fingerprints and in vitro antioxidant properties.
2018
The interest in gluten-free (GF) products increases together with the increase in gluten-sensitive people. However, GF foods might have decreased nutritional quality as compared to the gluten containing counterparts. In this work, an investigation of the phenolic and antioxidant profile in 18 GF flours belonging to legumes, cereals and pseudocereals was achieved. Significant differences could be observed across samples. Total phenolic content was highest in violet rice flours, whereas total anthocyanins were highest in violet, nerone, and black rice flours. FRAP and ORAC antioxidant activities were correlated to phenolic contents and found to be higher in violet rice flours. Metabolomics hi…
