The Development of Intercultural Relationships at Work: Polish Migrant Workers in Finland
2013
This article offers an interpersonal communication perspective on relational processes in a workplace affected by the international flow of labor migration. We investigate how temporary migrant workers and their foreign colleagues perceive developing interpersonal relationships with each other through an analysis of in-depth interviews with employees of a Finnish recruitment agency and Polish metal workers it has recruited. The recruitment agents talk about their relationships with the recruited Polish workers; the Polish workers also describe their relationships with their Finnish colleagues at the customer company. The context under investigation emerges as rich in relational processes. T…
The market of migrant smuggling through Libya to Southern Italy since 2011: filling the knowledge gap as a human rights' strategy
2018
The first formal distinction between human smuggling and trafficking in international law was made with the signing in December 2000 of the Palermo Protocols. These definitions have influenced and shaped most of the academic research, discourse, methodology and language on human smuggling and trafficking. In turn, an understanding of the formal definitions of these crimes is necessary to appreciate their influence on policies and therefore their effects on the individuals and institutions involved (Campana and Varese, 2015). The argument at the basis of this thesis is that academic research on especially migrant smuggling has often blindly adopted the above-mentioned definitions as a given-…
2018
This article focuses on skilled migration flows from Southern Europe into Mexico. From semi-structured interviews with Spanish and Italian immigrants living in four Mexican cities of Mexico, it addresses both reasons for immigration and labour incorporation in Mexican labour markets. Specifically, it explores: i) the role of the economic crisis and the lack of good employment in the countries of origin as a key factor when deciding an international migration; ii) the employment opportunities offered in Mexican labour markets for the highly-skilled immigrants, and iii) the role played by the Mexican state and its current immigration law when channelling this group into the labour market
Contemporary slavery: the exploitation of migrants in italian agriculture
2020

2018
The actual empirical reality, in which the most important criminal manifestations are articulated according to modalities which cross the territorial frontiers of the States, imposes new normative solutions which - in the attempt not to leave 'pockets' of impunity - can redraw the traditional boundaries of the criminal regulations. In a context pervaded by international interventions of criminalization of the most serious forms of manifestation of crime (above all, the Palermo Convention and its Protocols), there is, first of all, at the domestic level, a change of the same territorial paradigm of the criminal law, which adapts the exercise of jurisdiction according to "variable geometries"…
