Size dependence of the Josephson critical behavior in pyrolytic graphite TEM lamellae

2014

We have studied the transport characteristics of TEM lamellae of different widths obtained from a graphite sample with electrical contacts at the edges of the embedded interfaces. The temperature dependence of the resistance, as well as the current-voltage characteristics, are compatible with the existence of Josephson-coupled superconducting regions. The transition temperature at which the Josephson behavior sets in decreases with a decreasing interface width and vanishes for widths below 200 nm. This interface-size dependence provides an explanation for differences observed in the transport behavior of graphite-based samples with interfaces, and it appears to be related to the influence o…

Solid-state electrochemical characterization of emissions and authorities producing Roman brass coins

2020

[EN] The voltammetry of immobilized particles (VIMP) is applied to describe the solid state electrochemistry of brass. This methodology, which involves sampling at the nanogram level, is applied to discriminate mints/authorities producing different Roman monetary emissions covering since the Republic (88 BCE) to Domitianus (55-96 CE) Upon attachment to graphite electrodes in contact with aqueous acetate buffer at pH 4.75, well defined voltarnmetric responses were obtained centered on Cu- and Zn-localized signals whose intensity can be correlated to EMP data, being sensitive to the contents of Zn (15-30 wt.%) and Sn (0.01-1.1 wt.%). Voltammetric data, combined with ATR-FTIR and FIB-PESEM/EDS…

Nanocomposites of epoxy resin with graphene nanoplates and exfoliated graphite: Synthesis and electrical properties

2014

Nanocomposites are nowadays one of the most promising materials. Among different fillers, e.g. carbon nanotubes and silicon carbide nanowires (NWSiC), already used with epoxy resin matrices, graphene exfoliated graphite (EG) and graphene nanoplates have some characteristics that make them unique for electromagnetic shielding materials. However, there is still an unresolved problem of proper dispersion that will ensure the homogeneity of samples. To overcome this drawback, inorganic fibres were proposed. An amount of 0.25 phr (parts per hundred; filler content presented as wt.% of the whole polymeric matrix) NWSiC, added to the EG 1 phr/epoxy resin sample, efficiently prevents filler agglome…

Oral intake of cadmium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, nickel, manganese and zinc in the university student's diet.

1993

A duplicate diet meal study was carried out with a group of university students living in a hostel, in order to estimate the intake of Zn, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Pb. Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn and Ni were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry and Cd, Co and Pb by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry after a nitric acid wet digestion procedure. The estimated intake values from the contents of breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks were compared with the values of the Provisional Tolerable Daily Intake (PTDI) in the case of Cd and Pb, Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) of Co, Fe and Zn and Estimated Safe and Adequate Dietetic Daily Intake (ESADDI) of Cu and Mn. Procedures of Separation and Pre‐concentration for Molybdenum Determination Using Atomic Spectrometry—a Review

2004

Abstract The literature concerning the improvement of atomic and ionic procedures for molybdenum determination through separation and pre‐concentration were updated. Analytical procedures based on flame atomic absorption spectrometry (AAAS), electrothermal or graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP‐OES), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry were reviewed taking into consideration the preliminary steps, which can enhance the selectivity and sensitivity based on co‐precipitation, solvent extraction, and solid‐phase extraction. Both in‐batch and on‐line procedures were considered.

Investigation of electrode material – Redox couple systems for reverse electrodialysis processes. Part I: Iron redox couples

2012

Abstract The performances of electrodialysis (ED) and reverse electrodialysis (RED) processes depend on several factors, including the nature of the electrode material and of the redox couple adopted to make possible the conversion between electric power and chemical potential. In this paper, the possible utilization of iron-based redox couples (FeCl3/FeCl2, hexacyanoferrate(III)/hexacyanoferrate(II) and Fe(III)-EDTA/Fe(II)-EDTA) on graphite and DSA electrodes for RED processes was studied by a detailed experimental investigation. The hexacyanoferrate(III)/hexacyanoferrate(II) system was stable for long time (more than 12 days) in the absence of light and oxygen at high redox couple concent…

Temperature influence on the synthesis of pristine graphene oxide and graphite oxide

2015

Abstract Derivative oxide carbon materials, such as graphene or graphite oxides, have been recently considered to be a promising material in a wide scenarios of emerging technologies due to their physical and chemical properties, as well as, for their low production costs. Even if apparently similar, these materials exhibit different physical and chemical properties. One of the critical issue is associated with the exfoliation process and contributes to the formation of graphene oxide and graphite oxide material. Here, we show a single synthetic wet method to produce graphene or graphite oxide by applying a control of the operational temperature during the reaction. The process was optimise…

Nanoindentation and Raman Spectroscopic Study of Graphite Irradiated with Swift238U Ions

2012

Modifications of the structure and mechanical properties of the isotropic fine-grained graphite R6650 irradiated with 2.6 GeV 238U ions at fluences up to 1013 ions/cm2 at room temperature are studied. A strong ion-induced increase of Young's modulus and hardness is observed that points to the formation of a hard form of carbon. Raman spectra ascertain the disordering of graphite and its transformation to glassy carbon.

Two-Dimensional Carbon: A Review of Synthesis Methods, and Electronic, Optical, and Vibrational Properties of Single-Layer Graphene

2019

Graphite has been widely used by humans for a large part of their history. Nevertheless, it has only recently been possible to isolate its basic unit: carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb structure on a single plane, namely graphene. Since its discovery, many techniques have been developed and improved to properly synthesize graphene and its derivatives which are part of the novel class of two-dimensional materials. These advanced materials have imposed themselves in nanotechnology thanks to some outstanding physical properties due to their reduced dimensions. In the case of graphene, its reduced dimension gives rise to a high electrical mobility, a large thermal conductivity, a high mechan…

Origin of Ubiquitous Stripes at the Graphite–Water Interface

2020

The investigation of solid-liquid interfaces is pivotal for understanding processes like wetting, corrosion, and mineral dissolution and growth. The graphite-water interface constitutes a prime example for studying the water structure at a seemingly hydrophobic surface. Surprisingly, in a large number of atomic force microscopy (AFM) experiments, well-ordered stripes have been observed at the graphite-water interface. Although many groups have reported on the observation of stripes at this interface, fundamental properties and, in particular, the origin of the stripes are still under debate. Proposed origins include contamination, interplanar stacking of graphene layers, formation of methan…
