Background There is little data regarding the effect of tooth whitening on microhardness of white spot lesions. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of home-bleaching and laser-assisted in-office bleaching on microhardness of demineralized enamel. Material and Methods Forty bovine incisors were selected and immersed in a demineralizing solution for 12 weeks to induce white spot lesions. The analysis of nanoindentation force curves collected on polymers through the common Oliver and Pharr procedure does not lead to a correct evaluation of Young’s modulus. In particular, the estimated elastic modulus is several times larger than the correct one, thus compromising the possibility of a nanomechanical characterization of polymers. Pile-up or viscoelasticity is usually blamed for this failure, and a deep analysis of their influences is attempted in this work. Piling-up can be minimized by indenting on a true nanometer scale, i.e., at penetration depth smaller than 200 nm. Objectives: To investigate the quality of newly formed bone in sheep mandibles submitted to distraction osteogenesis and low-level laser therapy (LLLT), based on hardness and modulus of elasticity values. The ideal moment for laser application (during the latency/activation period vs. during the bone consolidation period) was also evaluated. Swift-ion-induced hardening and reduction of dislocation mobility in LiF crystals

Ion-induced change in Vickers hardness and arm length of dislocation rosettes created by indentation on the (1 0 0) face of LiF crystals was studied. The irradiations were performed using swift U, Bi and Ni ions with a specific energy of 11 MeV per nucleon at fluences between 106 and 1013 ions cm−2. Remarkable effects of the ion-induced hardening and reduction of dislocation arm length were observed above the threshold fluences of about 109–1010 ions cm−2 and 106–107 ions cm−2, respectively. The products of track core damage and aggregates of single defects in the halo of overlapping tracks are responsible for the effects. Low-K factor of SiO2 layer on Si irradiated by YAG:Nd laser

Abstract The change of optical and electrical properties of SiO2 layer on Si single crystal exposed to YAG:Nd laser radiation has been found experimentally. The second harmonic of YAG:Nd laser was used as a source of light. Before irradiation the SiO2 layer with thickness 0.75 μm had red color in reflecting light due to the interference. After irradiation with the laser with intensity of more than 3.5 MW/cm2 red color changed to yellow. However, samples with thickness 0.21 μm did not change color after irradiation.
