Effects of preemptive analgesia with intravenous acetaminophen on postoperative pain relief in patients undergoing third molar surgery: a prospective…
2020
Background The efficacy of preemptive analgesia in managing postoperative pain remains controversial. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of intravenous (IV) acetaminophen administered before or immediately after the surgical extraction of an impacted mandibular third molar. Material and Methods This prospective randomized clinical trial included 120 patients. The patients were assigned to one of three groups: the preoperative-treatment group (pre-group), which received 1000 mg of IV acetaminophen 20 min before surgery; the postoperative-treatment group (post-group), which received 1000 mg of IV acetaminophen after surgery; the no-treatment group (control-group), which did not…
A simple high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the measurement of pyridoxal-5-phosphate and 4-pyridoxic acid in human plasma.
2014
Abstract Background Low concentration of plasma pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP) is associated with hyperhomocysteinemia and inflammation. Most methods for the measurement of plasma PLP require large specimen volume and involve the use of toxic reagents. Methods We have developed a HPLC method for the measurement of PLP and 4-pyridoxic acid (4-PA) in plasma, which requires small specimen volume. The samples are prepared without adding any toxic reagents. Furthermore, we have examined whether intake of vitamin B 6 affects the concentration of plasma PLP and 4-PA. Results The coefficient of variation of the method was 6% and the recovery of the added vitamin in plasma was about 100%. The concentra…
Is At Least One Vitamin Helping Our Vasculature?

See related article, pp 1290–1298 Cardiovascular risk factors such as diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, chronic smoking, and hypercholesterolemia are cardiovascular risk factors known to be associated with endothelial dysfunction, a condition that may predict long-term progression of atherosclerosis as well as cardiovascular event rates (for review, see Munzel et al1) Although the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are complex and multifactorial, there is growing body of evidence that oxidative stress attributable to increased production of reactive oxygen–derived free radicals may play a pivotal role in this process.2 Increased superoxide production by enzyme systems such as the…
Anti-inflammatory Function of High-Density Lipoproteins via Autophagy of IκB Kinase
2015
Background & Aims: Plasma levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol are frequently found decreased in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Therefore, and because HDL exerts anti-inflammatory activities, we investigated whether HDL and its major protein component apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) modulate mucosal inflammatory responses in vitro and in vivo. Methods: The human intestinal epithelial cell line T84 was used as the in vitro model for measuring the effects of HDL on the expression and secretion of tumor necrosis factor (TNF), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and intracellular adhesion molecule (ICAM). Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB)-responsive promoter activity was studied by …

Histamine, histidine, and growth-phase mediated regulation of the histidine decarboxylase gene in lactic acid bacteria isolated from wine
2006
Fermented foods are frequently contaminated by histamine that is generated by microorganisms with histidine decarboxylase activity. The ingestion of large amounts of histamine can cause serious toxicological problems in humans. A study of the effects of histamine, histidine, and growth phase on histamine production by lactic acid bacteria isolated from wine is reported here. With northern blots and specific activity analysis, we observed that histidine induces the expression of the histidine decarboxylase gene (hdc) and that histamine causes a decrease in the expression of this gene. The expression of hdc is also mediated by the bacterial growth phase. Histidine and histamine do not affect …
Experimental Determination and Correlation of Liquid–Liquid Equilibria Data for a System of Water + Ethanol + 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Hexafluorop…
2017
Over the past few years, interest has increased regarding the application of ionic liquids (ILs) as extraction solvents for separating azeotropic mixtures. Following this trend, this work presents the experimental data of liquid–liquid equilibria (LLE) of the system envolving water, ethanol, and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim][PF6]) at different temperatures. The LLE data of the system was measured between 283.2 and 323.2 K to determine the temperature influence on the system. In the literature, reports of systems involving ILs that present type II behavior are scarce compared with those that present type I behavior; the system presented here also displays two immisc…
ABSTRACT. Hate Speech is an increasing problem that, in the last decade, is acquiring a special relevance, at both the i…
RNA dependent DNA polymerase in cells of xeroderma pigmentosum
1971
Abstract Cells from X.P. ∗ skin contain an RNA dependent DNA polymerase, while in cells from normal skin this enzyme is lacking. This finding stimulates the thought that carcinogenesis in X.P. cells is due to an infection with an oncogenic RNA virus.
Utilization of Xylitol in Animals and Man
1969
The discovery of the pentose phosphate cycle and the glucuronic acid xylulose cycle as important metabolic pathways raised the question of the nutritive and dietetic significance of the metabolites involved in the mentioned cycles or related substances and also the problem of their clinical use in disorders of the carbohydrate metabolism.
