CH-Directed Anion-π Interactions in the Crystals of Pentafluorobenzyl-Substituted Ammonium and Pyridinium Salts

Simple pentafluorobenzyl-substituted ammonium and pyridinium salts with different anions can be easily obtained by treatment of the parent amine or pyridine with the respective pentafluorobenzyl halide. Hexafluorophosphate is introduced as the anion by salt metathesis. In the case of the ammonium salt 4, water co-crystallisation seems to suppress effective anion-pi interactions of bromide with the electron-deficient aromatic system, whereas with salts 5 and 6 such interactions are observed despite the presence of water. Mitochondrial glutathione depletion by glutamine in growing tumor cells.

The effect of L-glutamine (Gln) on mitochondrial glutathione (mtGSH) levels in tumor cells was studied in vivo in Ehrlich ascites tumor (EAT)-bearing mice. Tumor growth was similar in mice fed a Gln-enriched diet (GED; where 30% of the total dietary nitrogen was from Gln) or a nutritionally complete elemental diet (SD). As compared with non-tumor-bearing mice, tumor growth caused a decrease of blood Gln levels in mice fed an SD but not in those fed a GED. Tumor cells in mice fed a GED showed higher glutaminase and lower Gln synthetase activities than did cells isolated from mice fed an SD. Herein, we present a novel silica-based stationary phase modified with N-propyl-N'-2-pyridylurea selector. Due to the weakly basic properties of the pyridine selector and the presence of residual silanols after selector immobilization, a zwitterionic surface with a pI observed at approximately pH 5.5 was measured by electrophoretic light scattering in pH-dependent ζ-potential determinations. Ion-Pairing Effects in the Self-Assembly of a Fluorescent Pseudorotaxane

Herein we report on the self-assembly, in a low polarity solvent, of a pseudorotaxane species comprising binaphthyl-26-crown-8 (BN26C8) as the macrocyclic host and anthracenyl-benzylammonium as the threadlike positively charged guest (ABH+). Absorption and luminescence data reveal a very efficient energy transfer process occurring from the binaphthyl to the anthracene singlet excited states. The self-assembly is highly dependent on the nature of the counteranion confirming the crucial role played by it in the competition between the self-assembly process and the formation of ion pairs (ABH+X-). A lambda gt11 cDNA library from Candida albicans ATCC 26555 was screened by using pooled sera from two patients with systemic candidiasis and five neutropenic patients with high levels of anti-C. albicans immunoglobulin M antibodies. Seven clones were isolated from 60,000 recombinant phages. The most reactive one contained a 0.9-kb cDNA encoding a polypeptide immunoreactive only with sera from patients with systemic candidiasis. The whole gene was isolated from a genomic library by using the cDNA as a probe. Plants inhabiting metal(loid)-contaminated areas should be able to sequester and detoxify these toxic elements as soon as they enter roots and leaves.
