Correlation between the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs4374383 in MERTK gene with the risk of development and progression of liver disease
Distribution of KIR Genes and Their HLA Ligands in Different Viral Infectious Diseases: Frequency Study in Sicilian Population
2022
Natural killer (NK) cells play a role in defence against viral infections by killing infected cells or by producing cytokines and interacting with adaptive immune cells. Killer immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) regulate the activation of NK cells through their interaction with human leucocyte antigens (HLA). Ninety-six Sicilian patients positive to Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1 (HIV) and ninety-two Sicilian patients positive to SARS-CoV-2 were genotyped for KIRs and their HLA ligands. We also included fifty-six Sicilian patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) already recruited in our previous study. The aim of this study was to compare the distribution of KIR–HLA genes/groups of these t…

HEPATIC STEATOSIS IS ASSOCIATED WITH SEVERE FIBROSIS IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC HEPATITIS B
2010
Background and aim: Steatosis and insulin resistance (IR) are the major disease modifying in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC). Only few studies evaluated these features in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). We aimed to assess the prevalence and the characteristics of steatosis and IR in CHB patients, compared to CHC subjects, and to evaluate the potential association between these features and fibrosis severity. Material and methods: 170 consecutive patients with CHB (28 HBeAg positive, 128 HBeAg negative, and 14 HBeAg negative/anti-HDV positive), and 170 sex, age and BMI matched genotype 1 CHC patients were evaluated by liver biopsy and metabolic measurements, including IR, by…

RUOLO DELL'INTERAZIONE KIRs/HLA NEI PAZIENTI CON INFEZIONE CRONICA DA HBV
Background: The Natural Killer (NK) cells provide a major defense against several infections and their activity is regulated partially through inhibitory and activating killer cell immunoglobulin - like receptors (KIRs) interacting with human leukocyte antigens (HLA) class I molecules. The aim of this study is to assess whether the KIR and HLA repertoire may influence the course of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Methods: Till now, twenty – four patients with chronic HBV infection have been genotyped for KIRs and their HLA ligands, along with non-exposed subjects (HBsAg negative, anti - HBcAb positive with or without anti - HBsAb) as controls. Results: All the KIR haplotypes are represen…
Multimodal approaches to the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.
2008
The prevalence of hepatocellular carcinoma in Europe and the US is increasing and is currently the leading cause of death in patients with cirrhosis. Surveillance programs for patients with cirrhosis aim to detect tumors at an early stage, when the greatest therapeutic benefits can be achieved. Curative treatments for early-stage tumors include liver transplantation, resection and percutaneous ablation. Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and sorafenib can improve survival for patients with intermediate and advanced tumors, respectively. In clinical practice, combination therapies are often used, despite limited evidence to support this approach from randomized controlled trials. Combina…
Water absorption and hydrothermal performance of PHBV/sisal biocomposites
2014
[EN] The performance of biocomposites of poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-valerate) (PHBV) and sisal fibre subjected to hydrothermal tests at different temperatures above the glass transition of PHBV (TH ¿ 26, 36 and 46 C) was evaluated in this study. The influences of both the fibre content and presence of coupling agent were focused. The water absorption capability and water diffusion rate were considered for a statistical factorial analysis. Afterwards, the physico-chemical properties of water-saturated biocomposites were assessed by Fourier-Transform Infrared Analysis, Size Exclusion Chromatography, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Scanning Electron Microscopy. It was found that the water d…
Influenza dei percorsi formativi sulle conoscenze di infezioni da HIV, HBV e HCV nella pratica odontoiatrica
2005
The knowledge and preventive practices toward the risk of infection with HIV, HBV and HCV were evaluated in a sample of 254 dentists and odontostomatologies in Palermo, by answering to an anonymous questionnaire sent by mail. Overall, most of the participants showed a good knowledge of the transmission pattern of blood-borne viruses as well as good practice for personal hygiene (washing of hands, routine use of gloves, etc.). However 80.8% answered to recap needles after use and more than 40% have had at least one needle injury during the last year in their occupational setting. Moreover, nearly 24% of the interviewed declared to have not made vaccination against Hepatitis B virus infection…
Hepatīta B vīrusa G genotipa serdes antigēna veidoto vīrusveidīgo daļiņu raksturošana
2016
