The role of Interleukin-2 during the activation of cytotoxic T-lymphocytes
1983
Serotonin modulates a depression-like state in Drosophila responsive to lithium treatment
2016
Major depressive disorder (MDD) affects millions of patients; however, the pathophysiology is poorly understood. Rodent models have been developed using chronic mild stress or unavoidable punishment (learned helplessness) to induce features of depression, like general inactivity and anhedonia. Here we report a three-day vibration-stress protocol for Drosophila that reduces voluntary behavioural activity. As in many MDD patients, lithium-chloride treatment can suppress this depression-like state in flies. The behavioural changes correlate with reduced serotonin (5-HT) release at the mushroom body (MB) and can be relieved by feeding the antidepressant 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan or sucrose, which …
Achievement strategies at school: types and correlates
2002
In this study we made an effort to identify the kinds of strategies adolescents deploy in achievement context in an unselected sample of Swedish adolescents. The participants were 880 14-15-year-old comprehensive school students (399 boys and 481 girls) from a middle-sized town in central Sweden. Six groups of adolescents were identified according to the strategies they deployed. Four of them, i.e. optimistic, defensive pessimistic, self-handicapping and learned helplessness strategies, were similar to those described previously in the literature. The results showed that membership in the functional strategy groups, such as in mastery-oriented and defensive pessimist groups, was associated …
Immune parameters identify Italian centenarians with a longer five-year survival independent of their health and functional status
2014
Centenarians are rare and exceptional individuals characterized by a peculiar phenotype. They are the best example of healthy aging in humans as most of them have escaped or substantially delayed the onset of major age-related diseases. Within this scenario, the purpose of the present work was to understand if immune status is associated with survival and health status in centenarians. To this aim, 116 centenarians were concomitantly characterized for their immunological, health and functional status, and followed-up for five-year survival. On the basis of previous knowledge we focused on a core of fundamental and basic immune parameters (number of leukocytes, monocytes, total lymphocytes, …

Structural and functional characterization of a human IgG monoclonal antiphospholipid antibody
2009
Antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) are likely involved in the pathogenesis of the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). This study analyzes the structural and functional characteristics of a human monoclonal aPL (HL7G) from the IgG2 subtype with λ light chains generated from a patient with primary APS and recurrent cerebral microemboli. DNA encoding the variable region of heavy and light chains of the antibody was sequenced, analyzed, and compared to HL5B a previously described monoclonal aPL from the same patient. Both antibodies are derived from the same germline genes. HL7G had similar but more extensive somatic mutations in the CDR1 and 2 regions than HL5B, indicating that both antibodies are…
Differentiation driven by granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor endows microglia with interferon-γ-independent antigen presentation functi…
1993
The antigen presentation function of microglial cells was analyzed after differentiation in neonatal mouse brain cell cultures supplemented either with macrophage (M) or granulocyte/macrophage (GM) colony-stimulating factor (CSF). The cells separated from concomitant astrocytes in both culture systems turned out to exhibit cytological characteristics of macrophages and bore MAC-1 and F4/80 markers in a similar way. When comparatively tested for accessory cell function, only microglia developed with GM-CSF were able to efficiently induce antigen-directed proliferation of a series of helper T cell lines representing both the TH1 and TH2 subtype. Antigenic T cell activation by this microglia p…
Increased helper cell activity of NZB mice against H-2-identical allogeneic cells.
1988
The T cells of NZB mice become hyperreactive after stimulation with minor histocompatibility (MIH) antigens. This hyperreactivity has previously been demonstrated only for cytotoxic T cells of NZB, although there was some evidence for an increase of their T-helper cell activity facilitating the response. Here we report a quantitative analysis of T-cell help and help of T-cell subpopulations against autologous, MIH, and H-2 antigens in a limiting dilution assay. After stimulation of NZB T cells with autologous and H-2 antigens, the T-helper cell frequencies did not differ from that of normal mice. After stimulation with MIH antigens however, Lyt 1+2+</sup…
Emotional and cognitive adjustment in abused children
1994
Research on the impact of maltreatment on children has increased in the last years, as there is a need to design appropriate treatment strategies. Social, cognitive, and emotional areas may be affected in these children. This research is aimed to study the psychological functioning of child victims, particularly in their emotional and cognitive adjustment. Nineteen children (10.3 years old) with case histories of at least 2 years of physical and emotional parental abuse and a group of 26 nonmaltreated children (9.4 years old) matched in socio-economic characteristics and coming from the same community area were compared in depressive symptomatology and attributional style by using the stand…
Effects of a weight management program delivered by social media on weight and metabolic syndrome risk factors in overweight and obese adults: A rand…

Author(s): Jane, Monica; Hagger, Martin; Foster, Jonathan; Ho, Suleen; Kane, Robert; Pal, Sebely | Abstract: IntroductionThe aim of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of using social media to augment the delivery of, and provide support for, a weight management program delivered to overweight and obese individuals during a twenty four week intervention.MethodsParticipants randomly divided into either one of two intervention groups or a control group. The two intervention groups were instructed to follow identical weight-management program. One group received the program within a Facebook group, along with a support network with the group, and the other intervention group receive…
