Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan etelävaltioiden kirjallisuuden groteskia hahmoa eli Southern grotesque -tyyppihahmoa Truman Capoten romaanissa Other Voices, Other Rooms (1948). Teoksen neljää eri henkilöhahmoa analysoidaan sekä queer-teorian avulla että suhteessa etelävaltioiden goottilaisen romaanin traditioon. Työ etenee kirjallisen henkilöhahmon määrittelyn kautta Southern grotesque -hahmon erityispiirteisiin ja siitä tehtyihin tulkintoihin. Etelävaltioiden groteskeja hahmoja, joiksi myös Other Voices, Other Roomsin hahmot on luokiteltu, on pidetty perinteisten määritelmien mukaan esimerkiksi epäluonnollisina, rumina ja perversseinä, ja niiden funktioksi on nähty naurun tai pelon herättäminen…

Suomalaisen perheen yhteisen sukunimen lyhyt historia

Viimeistään 1900-luvulta lähtien on ajateltu, että yhteinen sukunimi symboloi suomalaista perhettä julkisissa yhteyksissä ja muodostaa perheenjäsenten yhteisen identiteetin perustekijän. Suomen lainsäädännön mukaan naiset olivat kuitenkin velvollisia ottamaan aviomiehensä sukunimen vain lyhyen aikaa, 1930-luvulta 1980-luvulle ulottuvalla ajanjaksolla. Näkemys oikeudenmukaisuudesta ja kihlakunnantuomarin viraltapano 1700-luvun puolivälin Vanhassa Suomessa

Sven Johan Östring hoiti Vanhassa Suomessa sijainneen Savonlinnan tuomiokunnan kihlakunnantuomarin virkaa reilun vuosikymmen ajan keväästä 1747 kesään 1760. Kihlakunnantuomarin ja tuomiokunnan rahvaan välit kärjistyivät 1750-luvun lopulla talonpoikien valittaessa toistuvasti tuomari Östringin väärinkäytöksistä. Talonpoikien mukaan kihlakunnantuomari Östring oli heidän vihamiehensä. Artikkelissa kysytään, miten virkavirhevalitusprosessit etenivät ja mitkä syyt johtivat lopulta kihlakunnantuomarin viraltapanoon. The minor as major: Outsiderness and social class in Saara Turunen’s prose

Saara Turunen’s Sivuhenkilö is a work of autofiction, which tells the story of a year in its unnamed protagonist’s life. Despite her success as an author, the protagonist feels like a minor character in her own life: an outsider both because of her gender and her profession as a writer. In this article, I offer a critical reading of Turunen’s prose by asking what political implications are attached to her handling of outsiderness. I approach outsiderness not merely as a theme, but also as a genre-specific feature peculiar to the tradition of feminist rewriting. Purpose – The purpose of this study is to identify the different research strands concerning studies related to human resource management (HRM) and ageing employees. More specifically, the paper analyses how age and gender are understood and conceptualized in these studies. Social media as a place to see and be seen : Exploring factors affecting job attainment via social media

Job seekers can utilize social media platforms to actively search for job opportunities and also receive unsolicited job offers from recruiters and employers. Using data from a representative sample of Finnish social media users, this article studies both aspects of social media job attainment by analyzing how much individuals successfully apply for jobs and get recruited to positions through social media. Results show that the prevalence of successfully applying to jobs through social media does not differ statistically between socio-economic groups, but the prevalence of getting recruited to jobs through social media is greater within higher socio-economic groups.
