The Custonaci marble district of western Sicily is known for the production of a valuable ornamental stone that has been, and nowadays is exploited due to its suitable properties and aesthetic qualities. The “Libeccio Antico” was, among the “marbles”, the most appreciated ornamental stone during the Baroque Age (the XVII–XVIII centuries), due to its strong polychrome contrasts from ivory to yellow, green or dark red. This polychrome pattern is the result of dissolution processes that involved an Upper Triassic peritidal limestone. During the past couple of decades, heritage has become topical in a new way in Europe as the concept has been utilized for political purposes in the EU cultural policy. The EU currently administrates or supports three initiatives – the European Heritage Days, the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage, and the European Heritage Label – that address the fostering of the transnational European cultural heritage. The article discusses the explicit and implicit heritage politics included in these initiatives. First, it briefly presents the role of UNESCO in the area of culture and education, together with the UN Agenda 2030 and the challenges faced currently. The chapter describes the study case of Trapani historical watwerfront, in particular the design solution adopted for nautical sport events and linked to regional landscape quality. The Trapani fluidity is connetted with an entrenched sea cultural and natural heritage. Actions, plans and programmes implemented for regeneration and development are based on cultural and natural heritage to be regulated, connected and transformed, in order to preserve the urban and regional identity.

Misterbianco, located on the southern slope of Mt. Etna (eastern Sicily), was destroyed in the past by two catastrophic events that raised the old town to the ground. The first was the great eruption of 1669, whose lava front buried dozens of villages encountered along its path, entirely destroying the architectural heritage of Etna's southern flank. The second event was the disastrous 1693 Val di Noto earthquake, which caused major destruction throughout south-eastern Sicily, also damaging the few still standing buildings in the town. This chapter investigates the relationship between food products and origin places within the European Union food policies. In the 1990s, the EU established a Geographical Indication (GI) system, constituted of a set of food quality brands and a legal framework for food, wine and spirits. This system, defined as a sui generis model by insiders, entails a strong EU government participation in the typical food symbolic and material modelling. Piece chlebowe, wolno stojące, od XIX w. stanowiły charakterystyczny element zabudowy osiedli i kolonii robotniczych na Górnym Śląsku powstałych w związku z intensywnym rozwojem przemysłu. Piece te nazywane piekarniokami, piekarokami służyły przede wszystkim mieszkańcom do wypieku chleba i kołaczy drożdżowych. W okresie powojennym (od lat 50.) w związku z przemianami cywilizacyjnymi – pozbawione opieki i ochrony – zaczęły znikać ze śląskiego krajobrazu. Współcześnie tego typu przykładów architektury dziedzictwa poprzemysłowego pozostało niewiele. Dwa takie obiekty, pochodzące z początku XX stulecia, znajdują się w Rudzie Śląskiej.
