Pleomorphic adenoma of the lateral nasal wall: case report.
2008
Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common tumour of the salivary glands. However, it is extremely rare for these to originate in the nose and even when they do so, it is most commonly in the nasal septum. It is important to be aware of the paucity of presenting symptoms (nasal obstruction and epistaxis), as the lesion may not be recognized immediately. Growth is generally restricted locally and the tumour is not known to spread to the neighbouring structures. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice. Recurrences and evolution to malignancy are not frequent, but long-term follow-up is recommended. The case is presented of pleomorphic adenoma arising from the lateral wall of the right nasal…
Overexpression of GLUT-1 is associated with resistance to radiotherapy and adverse prognosis in squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity
2006
This study tested the hypothesis that GLUT-1 is a marker of radioresistance in oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC). A GLUT-1 labeling index (LI) was determined by immunohistochemistry in 40 pretreatment OSCC biopsies. Radiation responses were categorized by histopathology of the resection specimens. Associations between the LI and radiation response, Kaplan-Meier survival estimates and Cox regression analysis for the variables GLUT-1, T-stage, N-stage and chemotherapy were examined. The median LI was 64.2% (range 14-100%). Tumors with65% of GLUT-1+cells were more resistant to radiation (p=0.023). Overall survival was higher (p=0.044) for subjects with low LI (median value) than those with …
P16INK4A and p15INK4B gene alteration associated with oxidative stress in renal cell carcinomas after the chernobyl accident (pilot study).
2002
Our study was undertaken to better understand the role of G1/S transition abnormalities in the malignant progression of renal cell carcinomas (RCCs), exposed to long-term low doses of ionizing radiation (IR), from patients living in radiocontaminated areas of the Ukraine after the Chernobyl accident. We studied p16 and p15 gene alteration in association with oxidative stress markers, including inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2). We analyzed 88 samples collected from 22 patients with RCCs and with different exposure to IR. Homozygous deletion of the p16 and p15 genes, as well as hypermethylation of the 5CpG island in the promoter region of the same genes, were…
Primary oral melanoma : a histopathological and immunohistochemical study of 22 cases of Latin America
2011
Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of 22 cases of primary oral melanomas (OM). Study Design: Twenty two cases of primary oral melanoma were analyzed by description of their histopathological features and immunohistochemical study using the antibodies S-100, HMB-45, Melan-A and Ki-67. Results: The mean age was 58 years and 14 cases were female. The main affected sites were the hard palate, followed by the upper gingiva. Microscopically, 15 cases presented level III of invasion, 2 cases were amelanotic and 13 showed a mixed epithelioid and plasmacytoid or spindle cells composition. Some cases showed necrosis, perivascu…
Ewing-like sarcoma with CIC-DUX4 gene fusion in a patient with neurofibromatosis type 1. A hitherto unreported association.
2015
Sarcoma with CIC-DUX4 gene fusion is emerging as the most prevalent subset of Ewing-like undifferentiated small round cell sarcomas with around 50 cases published. We report hereby the case of a 40-year-old male who presented a CIC-DUX4 sarcoma in deep soft tissues in his thigh. He had been diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 1 at age 19 and over the years underwent resection of multiple neural neoplasms, including two malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors with classical spindle-cell histopathology. The CIC-DUX4 sarcoma was treated with surgical resection, radiation and chemotherapy, but lung and brain metastases developed and the patient died from the disease 14 months after diagnosis…
Infrequent early recanalization of greater saphenous vein after endovenous laser treatment
2003
Abstract Objective The frequency of recanalization of the greater saphenous vein (GSV) after endovenous laser treatment (ELT) is unclear. This study was undertaken to establish the incidence of early recanalization after ELT and to study the histopathologic features of reperfused and excised GSV. Methods One hundred nine GSV in 85 consecutive patients with clinical stage C 2-6 E P,S A S,P,D P R disease were treated with ELT. Twelve months of follow-up with duplex scanning at regular intervals was possible in 104 treated veins (95.4%) in 82 patients (96.5%). Recanalized vessels were removed surgically and examined at histopathology. Results ELT-induced occlusion proved permanent at duplex sc…
Lymph Node Metastases in Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer are Correlated With the Number of Transurethral Resections and Tumour Upstaging at Radica…
2005
The first paper in this section, from Mainz, attempts to identify the clinical variables associated with the prevalence of lymph node metastases in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. The authors found that delay in cystectomy in this potentially dangerous type of tumour is to be avoided, with a higher incidence of lymph node metastases as the number of transurethral resections increases. A paper from Austria shows that in renal carcinoma the pT1 subdivision is associated with differences in conventional histopathology and expression of biomarkers. OBJECTIVE To identify clinical variables associated with the prevalence of lymph node metastases (LNMs) in patients with non-muscle invasive tra…
Prognostic significance of DNA ploidy, S-phase fraction, and tissue levels of aspartic, cysteine, and serine proteases in operable gastric carcinoma
2000
A consecutive series of 63 untreated patients undergoing surgical resection for stage I-IV gastric adenocarcinomas (GCs) has been prospectively studied. Our purpose was to analyze the predictive relevance of DNA ploidy, S-phase fraction (SPF), and tissue levels of lysosomal proteinases cathepsin D (CD), cathepsin B (CB), cathepsin L (CL), and urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and that of the intracellular cysteine proteinase inhibitor stefin A on clinical outcome. All of the patients taking part in this study were followed up for a median of 73 months. DNA aneuploidy was present in 71% of the cases (45/63), whereas 9% of these (4/45) showed multiclonality. Both DNA ploidy and SPF w…
Production of Anti-Endomysial Antibodies in Cultured Duodenal Mucosa: Usefulness in Coeliac Disease Diagnosis
2002
Although anti-endomysial antibodies (EmA) have been found in the supernatants of cultured intestinal mucosa from patients with coeliac disease (CD), in no study has the clinical reliability of this new diagnostic tool been investigated. Our aims were to evaluate the clinical usefulness of the in vitro production of EmA in CD diagnosis in consecutive patients with suspected CD, and to evaluate the reliability of the in vitro challenge in CD patients on a gluten-free diet (GFD).For the former aim, consecutive patients who were due to undergo intestinal biopsy for suspected diagnosis of CD were enrolled: according to the final diagnosis, these patients were divided into two groups: Group 1 com…
Role of FNAC in the diagnosis of intraosseous jaw lesions
2014
Background: FNAC of intraosseous jaw lesions has not been widely utilized for diagnosis due to rarity and diversity of these lesions, limited experience and lack of well established cytological features. Aim of the study was to determine the role of FNAC in the diagnosis of intraosseous jaw swellings. Material and Methods: 42 patients underwent FNAC over a period of 7 years (2007-2013), of which 37 (88.1%) aspirates were diagnostic. Histopathology correlation was available in 33 cases and diagnostic accuracy of FNAC was calculated. Results: Lesions were categorized into inflammatory 3, cysts/hamartomas 15 and neoplasms 19. Mandibular and maxillary involvement was seen in 21 and 16 patients …
