Complete genome sequence of the methanogenic neotype strain Methanobacterium formicicum MF(T.).

2014

The neotype strain Methanobacterium formicicum MFT (DSM1535), a hydrogenotrophic methanogenic Archaeon, was isolated from a domestic sewage sludge digestor in Urbana (IL, USA). Here, the complete genome sequence of the methanogen is reported. The genome is 2,478,074 bp in size, featuring a GC content of 41.23%. M. formicicum MFT encodes several genes predicted to be involved in adaptation to abiotic stress such as high osmolarity. The strain MFT is of biotechnological importance since M. formicicum strains are often found in production-scale biogas plants and it is suggested as a starter culture for the anaerobic biomethanation process. Genetic relationship between clinical and environmental Vibrio cholerae isolates in Tanzania: A comparison using repetitive extragenic palindromic (R…

2015

The bacterium causing cholera, Vibrio cholerae, is a marine organism and coastal waters are important reservoirs of the organism. There are more than 200 serogroups of V. cholerae, of which serogroups O1 and O139 are known to be the causative agent of the cholera. The main virulent factor in V. cholerae is cholera toxin gene (ctx) that is found from the epidemic O1 and O139 strains, but may also be found in some strains other than O1 and O139 (non-O1 and non-O139). In this study, 48 V. cholerae strains isolated from three estuaries of Tanzania and 20 stool isolates were characterized in terms of their serogroups and possession of ctx gene and then compared using two PCR based fingerprinting…

From conceptualization to constructions in Finnish as an L2 : a case study

2017

AbstractThis study traces the individual learning trajectories of an adult beginner L2 Finnish learner in expressing the extralinguistic concept of evaluation from a dynamic usage-based perspective. Our results provide support for the view of learner language as a dynamic system in which patterns wax and wane and in which a change in one component has the potential to affect the whole system. In the early stages of learning there was a strong preference to use lexical verbs first, and then adjectives. The study also shows that variability plays a role. Finally, the study confirms that the learning of L2 constructions is in some cases item based. However, another highly frequent and superfic…

Fiziskās slodzes ietekme uz lipīdu profila izmaiņām asins plazmā.

2022

From endosomes onwards : membranes, lysosomes and viral capsid interactions

2009

Kirsi Pakkanen haki väitöstutkimuksessaan monitieteellisen lähestymistavan avulla uusia näkökulmia virustutkimukseen. Tutkimus tuo uutta tietoa lipidikalvojen merkityksestä viruksen ja viruksen isäntäsolun elämässä. Tutkimuksessa selvisi, että koiran parvovirus, jota tutkimuksessa käytettiin mallina parvoviruksille ja yleisemmin vaipattomille viruksille, tarvitsee tietynlaisia isäntäsolun lipidikalvojen ominaisuuksia voidakseen vapautua solunsisäisten endosomirakkuloiden sisältä. Erityisen tärkeää tässä vapautumisessa näytti olevan kalvojen juoksevuus sekä jäykkien alueiden hallittu järjestäytyminen kolesterolin avulla. Hyödyntämällä molekyylejä, lääkeaineita, jotka muuttavat kolesteroliavu…

Real-world experience with obeticholic acid in patients with primary biliary cholangitis

2021

Background & aims Obeticholic acid (OCA) is the second-line treatment approved for patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and an inadequate response or intolerance to ursodeoxycholic acid. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of OCA under real-world conditions. Methods Patients were recruited into the Italian PBC Registry, a multicentre, observational cohort study that monitors patients with PBC at national level. The primary endpoint was the biochemical response according to Poise criteria; the secondary endpoint was the biochemical response according to normal range criteria, defined as normal levels of bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and alanine aminotransfer…

Lipid Binding Controls Dimerization of the Coat Protein p24 Transmembrane Helix

2019

Abstract Coat protein (COP) I and COP II complexes are involved in the transport of proteins between the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus in eukaryotic cells. The formation of COP I/II complexes at membrane surfaces is an early step in vesicle formation and is mastered by p24, a type I transmembrane protein. Oligomerization of p24 monomers was suggested to be mediated and/or stabilized via interactions within the transmembrane domain, and the p24 transmembrane helix appears to selectively bind a single sphingomyelin C18:0 molecule. Furthermore, a potential cholesterol-binding sequence has also been predicted in the p24 transmembrane domain. Thus, sphingomyelin and/or cholestero…

Molecular Characterization of a Variant of Bacillus anthracis-Specific Phage AP50 with Improved Bacteriolytic Activity▿ †

2008

ABSTRACT The genome sequence of a Bacillus anthracis -specific clear plaque mutant phage, AP50c, contains 31 open reading frames spanning 14,398 bp, has two mutations compared to wild-type AP50t, and has a colinear genome architecture highly similar to that of gram-positive Tectiviridae phages. Spontaneous AP50c-resistant B. anthracis mutants exhibit a mucoid colony phenotype.
