Background The aim of this research was to assess the expression of aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 (ALDH1) and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) markers in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), and to correlate them with the clinical and histopathological parameters of a patient cohort with follow-up over an 8-year period. Fluoropyrimidines and oxaliplatin continued to be the mainstay of therapeutic regimens in the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). For this reason, pharmacokinetic and metabolism of these drugs were analyzed and the identification of accurate and validated predictive, prognostic and toxicity markers became necessary to develop an effective therapy adapted to the patient's molecular profile, while minimizing life-threatening toxicities. Demonstration of dihydro-orotate dehydrogenase inNeurospora crassa hyphae with a cytochemical procedure

Dihydro-orotate dehydrogenase activity was demonstrated in the hyphae of the fungusNeurospora crassa by a cytochemical technique. The activity was slightly stronger in the hyphal tips thus demonstrating the more intense metabolic activity in these parts of the mycelium. Several control reactions showed that the staining reaction was specific.

Electron transport chain in aerobically cultivated Zymomonas mobilis

Respiratory chain composition and energy coupling in cytoplasmic membrane of Zymomonas mobilis was shown to depend on culture aeration. Aerobically grown cells contained mainly the non-energy-generating NADH dehydrogenase with kM for NADH 58 mM. In anaerobically cultivated bacteria, the energy-coupling NADH dehydrogenase complex with km for NADH 7 mM predominated. In aerobically cultivated Z. mobilis, CoQ content and absorption peaks of cytochromes at 554–556 nm and 525–528 nm were significantly increased. PPAR-γ Agonist GW1929 But Not Antagonist GW9662 Reduces TBBPA-Induced Neurotoxicity in Primary Neocortical Cells

Tetrabromobisphenol A (2,2-bis(4-hydroxy-3,5-dibromophenyl)propane; TBBPA) is a widely used brominated flame retardant. TBBPA induces neuronal damage, but the mechanism by which this occurs is largely unknown. We studied the possible involvement of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) in TBBPA-induced apoptosis and toxicity in mouse primary neuronal cell cultures. TBBPA enhanced both, caspase-3 activity and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release in neocortical cells after 6 and 24 h of exposition. Expression of the succinate dehydrogenase genes (sdhCAB) from the facultatively anaerobic paenibacillus macerans during aerobic growth

Paenibacillus (formerly Bacillus) macerans is capable of succinate oxidation under oxic conditions and fumarate reduction under anoxic conditions. The reactions are catalyzed by different enzymes, succinate dehydrogenase (Sdh) and fumarate reductase (Frd). The genes encoding Sdh (sdhCAB) were analyzed. The gene products of sdhA and sdhB were similar to the subunits of known Sdh and Frd enzymes. The hydrophobic subunit SdhC showed close sequence similarity to the class of Sdh/Frd enzymes containing diheme cytochrome b. Hypothesis: can N-acetylcysteine be beneficial in Parkinson's disease?

Based on the finding of decreased mitochondrial complex I activity in the substantia nigra of patients with Parkinson's disease, we propose that the consequent reduction of ATP synthesis and increased generation of reactive oxygen species may be a possible cause of nigrostriatal cell death. Since sulfhydryl groups are essential in oxidative phosphorylation, thiolic antioxidants may contribute to the preservation of these proteins against oxidative damage. In the present paper, we hypothesize that treatment with a sulfur-containing antioxidant such as N-acetylcysteine may provide a new neuroprotective therapeutic strategy for Parkinson's disease.

Hepatocellular carcinoma after thorotrast exposure: establishment of a new cell line (Mz-Hep-1).

A human hepatoma cell line, associated with thorotrast exposure, from an hepatitis B marker-negative patient was established as a permanent cell line (Mz-Hep-1) in tissue culture. Histology of the primary tumor, as well as phase contrast, transmission and scanning electron microscopy of the cultured cells showed typical characteristics of liver cells. Nitric oxide synthase in the enteric nervous system of the guinea-pig: a quantitative description

The distribution and abundance of nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-containing neurons and their terminals in the gastrointestinal tract of the guinea-pig were examined in detail using NADPH diaphorase histochemistry and NOS immunohistochemistry. NOS-containing cell bodies were found in the myenteric plexus throughout the gastrointestinal tract and in the submucous plexus of the stomach, colon and rectum. NOS-containing neurons comprised between 12% (in the duodenum) and 54% (in the esophagus) of total myenteric neurons. In the ileum, NOS neurons represented 19% of total myenteric neurons.
