Conditioning hops increase triceps surae muscle force and Achilles tendon strain energy in the stretch-shortening cycle

2018

Postactivation potentiation can improve athletic performance, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. This study investigated the effect of conditioning hops on triceps surae muscle force and tendon strain and its contribution to potentiated stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) performance. Thirty-two subjects participated in two experiments. In both experiments, subjects performed three drop jumps (DJs) after prior conditioning with 10 maximal hops, three unconditioned DJs served as control. Ground reaction forces, kinematics, and triceps surae electromyographic activity were recorded. Ultrasound imaging was used to determine fascicle lengths (FASC) of the gastrocnemius (GM) and sol…

Validity of Hip-worn Inertial Measurement Unit Compared to Jump Mat for Jump Height Measurement in Adolescents

2018

Jump tests assess lower body power production capacity, and can be used to evaluate athletic ability and development during growth. Wearable inertial measurement units (IMU) seem to offer a feasible alternative to laboratory‐based equipment for jump height assessments. Concurrent validity of these devices for jump height assessments has only been established in adults. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the concurrent validity of IMU‐based jump height estimate compared to contact mat‐based jump height estimate in adolescents. Ninety‐five adolescents (10‐13 years‐of‐age; girls N = 41, height = 154 (SD 9) cm, weight = 44 (11) kg; boys N = 54, height = 156 (10) cm, weight = 4…

Resistance Training Acutely Impairs Agility and Spike-Specific Performance Measures in Collegiate Female Volleyball Players Returning from the Off-Se…

2020

This study examined the acute effects of resistance training (RT) on volleyball-specific performance. Sixteen female volleyball players undertook their initial, pre-season RT bout. Countermovement jump (CMJ), delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS), and sport-specific performances (i.e., run-up jump, agility, and spiking speed and accuracy) were measured before, 24 (T24), and 48 (T48) hours after RT. A significant increase in DOMS was observed at T24 and T48 (~207.6% &plusmn

Vertikaalihypyn korkeuden arviointi 3D-kiihtyvyysanturilla ja lajinomaisen kuormituksen vaikutukset hyppyyn

2016

Sensoreihin perustuvat menetelmät ovat yleistyneet urheilutestauksessa viime vuosina. Tarkoituksena oli selvittää hyppääjän kenkään kiinnitettävään 3D-kiihtyvyysanturiin perustuvan menetelmän validiteettia vertikaalihypyn korkeuden arvioinnissa. Voimalevyn lentoaikamenetelmää käytettiin kiihtyvyysanturimenetelmän validiteettianalyysissä ja lajikohtaisten kuormitusasetelman vertikaalihypyt arvioitiin kiihtyvyysanturimenetelmällä. Hyppysarjojen korkeimmat hypyt arvioitiin lisäksi voimalevyn lähtönopeusmenetelmällä. Kiihtyvyysanturimenetelmässä käytettiin urheilijan kenkään kiinnitettävää The Stride Sensor Bluetooth® Smart (Polar Electro Oy, Kempele, Suomi) -sensoria. Hyppytestit suoritettiin …

Muscle-tendon mechanics and energetics during walking, running and jumping.

2012

In the human lower limb, muscles and tendon tend to interact in an efficient manner during common movements like walking, running and jumping. This pattern of interaction exploits the ability of muscles to produce forces efficiently at low shortening velocities, whilst tendons act as springs that help to store elastic energy during the contact phase, and return a large proportion of the energy in the pushoff phase. This pattern of muscletendon interaction can be disrupted in novel tasks or as a consequence of ageing or disease, resulting in a decrease in movement efficiency. peerReviewed

Vertikaalihyppyjen voimantuoton yhteys mäkihypyn ponnistuksen tehokkuuteen

2016

Hakola, Lauri 2016. Vertikaalihyppyjen voimantuoton yhteys mäkihypyn ponnistuksen tehokkuuteen. Biomekaniikka, Pro gradu -tutkielma, Liikuntabiologian laitos, Jyväskylän yliopisto, 78 s. Ponnistusta pidetään mäkihyppysuorituksen tärkeimpänä osa-alueena, minkä johdosta biomekaaninen tutkimus on painottunut tämän osa-alueen ympärille.

An age-adapted plyometric exercise program improves dynamic strength, jump performance and functional capacity in older men either similarly or more …

2020

Power declines at a greater rate during ageing and is more relevant for functional deterioration than either loss of maximum strength or muscle mass. Human movement typically consists of stretch-shortening cycle action. Therefore, plyometric exercises, using an eccentric phase quickly followed by a concentric phase to optimize power production, should resemble daily function more than traditional resistance training, which primarily builds force production capacity in general. However, it is unclear whether older adults can sustain such high-impact training. This study compared the effects of plyometric exercise (PLYO) on power, force production, jump and functional performance to tradition…
