An efficient framework for the elasto-plastic reliability assessment of uncertain wind excited systems

2016

Abstract In this paper a method to efficiently evaluate the reliability of elastic-perfectly plastic structures is proposed. The method is based on combining dynamic shakedown theory with Subset Simulation. In particular, focus is on describing the shakedown behavior of uncertain elasto-plastic systems driven by stochastic wind loads. The ability of the structure to shakedown is assumed as a limit state separating plastic collapse from a safe, if not elastic, state of the structure. The limit state is therefore evaluated in terms of a probabilistic load multiplier estimated through solving a series of linear programming problems posed in terms of the responses of the underlying linear elast…

Effect of zero-point motion on the superconducting transition temperature of PdH(D)

1984

Using self-consistent density functional formalism we show that the electronic structure of PdH(D) is influenced by the zero-point vibration of hydrogen and deuterium. This quantum effect makes a small but significant contribution to the superconducting transition temperature ${T}_{c}$ of PdH(D). The reverse isotope effect on ${T}_{c}$ is found to be dominated by the changes in the force constants between PdH and PdD.

Length-scale-dependent vortex-antivortex unbinding in epitaxialBi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δfilms

1998

The supercurrent transport properties of epitaxial ${\mathrm{Bi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{CaCu}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{8+\mathrm{\ensuremath{\delta}}}$ films in zero applied magnetic field were investigated in a temperature interval of \ensuremath{\approx}20 K below the mean-field critical temperature ${T}_{c0}.$ The modification of the shape of the $I\ensuremath{-}V$ curves observed by varying the temperature was explained in terms of vortex-fluctuation-induced layer decoupling and vortex-antivortex unbinding, revealing a strong probing-length dependence. The change of the effective dimensionality of thermally excited vortices involved in the dissipation process leads to the appearance of …

Nonlinear electromagnetic response and Higgs-mode excitation in BCS superconductors with impurities

2019

We reveal that due to the presence of disorder oscillations of the order parameter amplitude called the Higgs mode can be effectively excited by the external electromagnetic radiation in usual BCS superconductors. This mechanism works for superconductors with both isotropic s-wave and anisotropic, such as d-wave, pairings. The non-linear response in the presence of impurities is captured by the quasiclassical formalism. We demonstrate that analytical solutions of the Eilenberger equation with impurity collision integral and external field drive coincide with the exact summation of ladder impurity diagrams. Using the developed formalism we show that resonant third-harmonic signal observed in…

Luminescence from nearly isolated surface defects in silica nanoparticles

2015

A structured emission/excitation pattern, proper of isolated defects, arises in a vacuum from silica nanoparticles. The luminescence, centered around 3.0-3.5 eV, is characterised by a vibronic progression due to the phonon coupling with two localised modes of frequency  ∼1370 cm(-1) and  ∼360 cm(-1), and decays in about 300 ns at 10 K. On increasing the temperature, the intensity and the lifetime decrease due to the activation of a non-radiative rate from the excited state. Concurrently, the temperature dependence of the lineshape evidences the low coupling with non-localised modes of the matrix (Huang-Rhys factor S ~ 0.2) and the poor influence of the inhomogeneous broadening. These findin…

A surface hopping algorithm for nonadiabatic minimum energy path calculations

2015

The article introduces a robust algorithm for the computation of minimum energy paths transiting along regions of near-to or degeneracy of adiabatic states. The method facilitates studies of excited state reactivity involving weakly avoided crossings and conical intersections. Based on the analysis of the change in the multiconfigurational wave function the algorithm takes the decision whether the optimization should continue following the same electronic state or switch to a different state. This algorithm helps to overcome convergence difficulties near degeneracies. The implementation in the MOLCAS quantum chemistry package is discussed. To demonstrate the utility of the proposed procedur…

To what extent do our walking and cycling behaviours relate to each other, and do we cycle as well as we think we do? Piloting the Walking and Cyclin…

2022

Greater uptake of active transport has been argued as necessary for the transport system to achieve relevant sustainability and public health goals; however, the research tools used to investigate behaviour when using these modes are far less well-developed than those used to investigate driving behaviour. This study takes two self-report behavioural measures, the Walking Behaviour Questionnaire (WBQ) and the Cycling Behaviour Questionnaire (WBQ), and pilots them in the UK. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses with data from 428 respondents revealed factor structures different to those described in the limited number of previous studies that used the CBQ and WBQ. Across both questio…

Mapping 123 million neonatal, infant and child deaths between 2000 and 2017

2019

Since 2000, many countries have achieved considerable success in improving child survival, but localized progress remains unclear. To inform efforts towards United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3.2—to end preventable child deaths by 2030—we need consistently estimated data at the subnational level regarding child mortality rates and trends. Here we quantified, for the period 2000–2017, the subnational variation in mortality rates and number of deaths of neonates, infants and children under 5 years of age within 99 low- and middle-income countries using a geostatistical survival model. We estimated that 32% of children under 5 in these countries lived in districts that had attained ra…
