Human Reaction Times: Linking Individual and Collective Behaviour Through Physics Modeling

2021

An individual’s reaction time data to visual stimuli have usually been represented in Experimental Psychology by means of an ex-Gaussian function. In most previous works, researchers have mainly aimed at finding a meaning for the parameters of the ex-Gaussian function which are known to correlate with cognitive disorders. Based on the recent evidence of correlations between the reaction time series to visual stimuli produced by different individuals within a group, we go beyond and propose a Physics-inspired model to represent the reaction time data of a coetaneous group of individuals. In doing so, a Maxwell–Boltzmann-like distribution appeared, the same distribution as for the velocities …

Rethinking Political Representation from the Perspective of Rhetorical Genres

2019

This article is a thought experiment. It constructs ideal types of political representation in the sense of Max Weber. Inspired by Quentin Skinner and others, the aim is to give a rhetorical turn to contemporary debates on representation. The core idea is to claim an ‘elective affinity’ (Wahlverwandschaft, as Weber says following Goethe) between forms of representation and rhetorical genres of their justification. The four ideal types of political representation are designated as plebiscitary, diplomatic, advocatory, and parliamentary, corresponding to the epideictic, negotiating, forensic, and deliberative genres of rhetoric as the respective ways to plausibly appeal to the audience. I dis…

Professional learning communities and teacher well‐being? A comparative analysis of primary schools in England and Finland

2009

The article is a comparative analysis of the policy and practice of professional learning communities (PLCs) in primary schools in England and Finland. The concept of PLC has become a globally fashionable one and has been explicitly advocated in policy documents in both countries. Drawing from a database of qualitative semi‐structured interviews with primary teachers, four key themes affecting their work and well‐being are identified: the primary school community; collaborative working; continuing professional development and trust and accountability. The realities of PLCs as experienced by primary teachers in each country are contrasted. Similarities in teachers’ responses were found, espe…

Beyond ideal two-dimensional metals: Edges, vacancies, and polarizabilities

2018

Recent experimental discoveries of graphene-stabilized patches of two-dimensional (2D) metals have motivated also their computational studies. However, so far the studies have been restricted to ideal and infinite 2D metallic monolayers, which is insufficient because in reality the properties of such metallic patches are governed by microstructures pervaded by edges, defects, and several types of perturbations. Here we use density-functional theory to calculate edge and vacancy formation energies of hexagonal and square lattices of 45 elemental 2D metals. We find that the edge and vacancy formation energies are strongly correlated and decrease with increasing Wigner-Seitz radii, analogously…

A note on Hilbert’s weak nullstellensatz

2015

In this article, through a suitable generalization of the well-known notion of spectrum of an element of an arbitrary normed algebra of Operator Theory, it will be possible to give another simple proof of the Hilbert’s Weak Nullstellensatz.

Question on ipm: A case study on lemon juice

2012

International audience; In food product development, using consumers to obtain ideal products is becoming more frequent inrecent years. Despite being an economical way of optimizing products, relying on consumers is,however, not yet widely accepted in the sensory community. The main objectives of this study were toevaluate (1) whether the stability of ideal intensities and ideal products could be improved byproviding a frame of references when consumers perform the Ideal Profile Method (IPM) and (2) theeffect of the order of the questions on consumers‘ responses. In the present study, sixty participants conducted two tasks: (1) rating the perceived and idealintensities of attributes and (2) …

Hugh MacDiarmid’s Poetics of Commitment: the Modern Stigmata of Bereavement

2016

In the 1930s, the lingering absence of God and of a stable reality engulfed the work of the poet Hugh MacDiarmid, leader of the Scottish Renaissance Movement. To counter this void, like many others at the time, MacDiarmid found refuge in communism and nationalism and started to write political and idealist poetry. In his poems, his political idealism comes into being in the association of reality and ideal, symbolised first by Jean and Sophia, the characters of A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle (1926), and duplicated later in the fantasised image of Lenin, perfect blending of idea and action. Rejecting Sartre’s denial of the political effect poetry can have, the violence of MacDiarmid’s work…

Relationship between mothers' thoughts and behaviors and their daughters' development of the body image

2019

Behaviors related to body image are influenced by learning and sociocultural environment; the parents can contribute to their children’s food problems through social values that they are supporting. Furthermore, it is known that during the development of the body image of girls it is fundamental the identification with the parent of the same sex. However, the extent of maternal influence is unknown, so our aim is to analyze the relationship between thoughts and behaviors of mothers and the development of their daughters’ body image, specifically on the variables: perceived image and ideal image, satisfaction and concern about body image, and social network behaviors. The study involved 53 p…

Emotional and Aesthetic Labor of Finnish Military Officers

2021

This study analyzes the emotional and aesthetic labor of Finnish military officers. It examines the kinds of valuations officers attach to the notion of an ideal soldier. The meanings that officers give to these ideals are explored within the wider framework of post-Fordist new work. The ideal soldier is traditionally considered to be physically capable and strong, rational, and in control—features culturally coded as masculine. An analysis of 108 military officers’ writings and 12 interviews showed that while the traditional masculine ideal still exists, a vast variety of valuations are related to new work. The notion of the new ideal worker includes attributes, such as empathy, emotional …
