TLR2: for or against Candida albicans?

In a recent issue of Trends in Microbiology, Netea and coworkers presented their opinion that toll-like receptors (TLRs) are involved in escape from the defense mechanisms of the host [1]. In their article, the authors clearly identified three major TLR-mediated escape mechanisms that are used by microbial pathogens, such as Yersinia, Mycobacterium and Candida. Here, we wish to comment on the roll of TLR2 in Candida albicans infections. Netea's interesting hypothesis, that TLR2 expression might confer to mice an increased susceptibility to C.

In this study, using multilocus microsatellite analysis, we report the genetic characterization of 27 Candida parapsilosis isolates recovered in two different periods of time (2007-2009 and 2011-2012) from infants hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit of a hospital in Messina, Italy. The results revealed the persistence and dominance of a particular infectious genotype among NICU patients and highlight the power of the used microsatellite markers in clarifying epidemiologic associations, detect micro-evolutionary variations and facilitating the recognition of outbreaks. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

About the role of TLR2 and TLR4 in cytokine secretion by murine macrophages in response to Candida albicans.

Dear Editor, In a recent issue of FEMS Immunology and Medical Microbiology , Blasi (2005) studied the biological role of Toll-like receptor (TLR)2 and TLR4 in the effector and secretory responses of murine macrophages to the fungal species Candida albicans . In their article, the authors conclude that the secretory response to C. albicans appears to be TLR4- but not TLR2-dependent. In our opinion this statement is misleading as the results reported do not support this conclusion and, therefore, we wish to comment on this issue. Antioxidant enzymes are known to protect living organisms against the oxidative stress risk, also induced by metals. In the present study, we describe the purification and molecular characterization of two Cu,Zn superoxide dismutases (SODs), referred to as Ci-SODa and Ci-SODb, from Ciona intestinalis, a basal chordate widely distributed in temperate shallow seawater. Biomimetic Synthesis of the Apoptosis-Inducing Thiazinoquinone Thiaplidiaquinone A

A concise total synthesis of the apoptosis-inducing, marine metabolite thiaplidiaquinone A is described. The key ring forming steps are both based on biosynthetic considerations and involve the construction of the central benzo[c]chromene quinone unit by an extremely facile oxa-6π-electrocyclic ring closure reaction of an ortho-quinone intermediate, derived by tautomerization of a bis-benzoquinone, readily accessed from two simple phenolic precursors. This is followed by the installation of the 1,4-thiazine-dioxide ring by reaction of the benzo[c]chromene quinone with hypotaurine.

Multinationality, foreignness and institutional distance in the relation between R&D and productivity

Abstract This paper empirically examines to what extent being foreign and part of a multinational affects the endogenous relation between R&D and productivity. Our findings indicate that multinationals obtain in general higher R&D returns. Also, there is a negative foreignness effect in that domestic-owned multinationals outperform foreign subsidiaries. However, these effects are somehow moderated by the institutional distance between the home and host countries. These results, obtained for a panel of UK firms, are largely consistent with a set of hypotheses derived from the institutional and international business theories.

The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) rises constantly each year worldwide. Because of that, the funds allocated for the DM treatment have increased over time. Regarding the number of DM cases, Romania is among the top ten countries in Europe. Based on the National Diabetes Programme (NDP), antidiabetic drugs and other expenditures (Self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) test, HbA1c, insulin pumps/insulin pumps supplies) are free of charge.
