Landscapes of loss and destruction: : Sámi elders’ childhood memories of the second world war

The so-called Lapland War between Finland and Germany at the end of the Second World War led to a mass-scale destruction of Lapland. Both local Finnish residents and the indigenous Sámi groups lost their homes, and their livelihoods suffered in many ways. The narratives of these deeply traumatic experiences have long been neglected and suppressed in Finland and have been studied only recently by academics and acknowledged in public. In this text, we analyze the interviews with four elders of one Sámi village, Vuotso. We explore their memories, from a child’s perspective, scrutinizing the narration as a multilayered affective process that involves sensual and embodied dimensions of memory. ©…

Tarkastelen tutkielmassani Surkeiden sattumusten sarja -nimisen lastenkirjasarjan fiktiivisen tekijähahmon, Lemony Snicketin, rooleja sarjan maailman rakentumisen näkökulmasta. Niin Snicket kuin sarjakin ovat Daniel Handler -nimisen materiaalisen tekijän tuotosta, mutta itse kirjoista tämä ei käy ilmi. Snicket ei kuitenkaan ole vain Handlerin salanimi vaan myös kirjojen kertoja ja henkilöhahmo niiden maailmassa. Sarjan annetaan ymmärtää perustuvan Snicketin tutkimustyölle: kirjat ovat fiktiivisiä tutkimusraportteja kolmen orpolapsen epäonnisesta elämästä. Investigating young Finnish CLIL pupils’ perceptions of foreign language use through visual narratives

Abstract This article explores how pupils in early CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) education perceive language skills and use. The participants were 25 French-medium and 16 English-medium CLIL pupils in Grade 2 (aged 8 years). They had received CLIL education since the 1st Grade. The data were visual narratives drawn by the pupils and some associated open-ended questions they answered in writing. The data were analyzed using visual and content analysis. A case of esthesioneuroblastoma, the pathological diagnosis of which almost always causes great difficulties, was investigated ultrastructurally, biochemically, and immunohistologically, using antibodies against the five known types of intermediate filaments [keratin, vimentin, desmin, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and neurofilaments]. The tumour cells did not react with antibodies against any of the five intermediate filament proteins.
